Novella, so small time commitment.

This is unlike anything I've ever read before. Yes, there's actual time travel, but that's just a framework on which to hang a story. A really wild weird wonderful story of two post-human (!!) women (!!) on opposing sides of a war who maybe sort of fall for each other, as they fight the war. BUT! The time war is nothing like historical military wars you've heard of before.

It is SO GOOD.

I love the world built in this book, and the story told. This book is just so goddamned good.

Here is a book that is DEFINITELY written for the male gaze. NOPE.

It was recommended to me by a few folx, all of them male video gamers -- as, apparently, there is a game called The Witcher based upon this series.

Sometimes hoopla is trash so I had to start a book on a different app so now I'm in the middle of a hundred different books it seems like

BibliOphelia I‘ve had much better luck with Libby vs. Hoopla. 6y
Kaye Hoopla has some issues that need fixed. I‘ve sent them notes about it in their help section. Sometimes the audiobook doesn‘t keep my place and I have to start again or try to find where I left off. The print size in the ebooks is WAY too small even set at the largest size. They‘re very prompt to reply but the repair end of it takes a lot longer. I wish their ebooks would send to kindle like Libby‘s does. 6y
abbielistenstobooks @BibliOphelia same! I far prefer Libby, but some books exist on hoopla that don't exist on Libby. 😭 6y
abbielistenstobooks @kaye I have all of those same problems! Ugh. But then there are some books that exist there that aren't on Libby. 🤷 6y

This one's a retelling of The Iliad, from the perspective of Briseis. Last year, I read The Song of Achilles, which is also a retelling of that story, from the perspective of Patroclus. I enjoyed SoA better, but this one was pretty great, and is one I read in 2019, so it counts for the fifth on the #PBNread2019 list

I finished this one a few days ago but I guess I didn't tell Litsy? As I just saw it on my "currently reading" list. What a fantastic series! What a fantastic universe! So cool to make humans the outsiders, the newcomers, the immigrant species. I loved it so much, and wish there were more books in this universe.

abbielistenstobooks Oh I see - there are two different tagable versions of this book. I did post my review when I first finished it! I guess I'm okay with singing its praises again though 🤷 6y

Couldn't help comparing to Song of Achilles, and this one doesn't win the comparison. It's good but not as good as that one. This one's much more brutal, and a bit less beautiful.

I've not read any direct translations of the Iliad, but between this and Song of Achilles, it's easy to find the details that came directly from the Iliad, and that was somewhat fun.
