Londoners
Londoners: The Days and Nights of London Now--As Told by Those Who Love It, Hate It, Live It, Left It, and Long for It | Craig Taylor
Craig Taylor is the real deal: a peerless journalist and a beautiful craftsman. David Rakoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Fraud and Half Empty Londoners is a wonderful bookI wanted it to be twice as long. Diana Athill, New York Times bestselling author of Somewhere Towards the End In Londoners, acclaimed journalist Craig Taylor paints readers an epic portrait of todays London that is as rich and lively as the city itself. In the style of Studs Terkel (Working, Hard Times, The Good War) and Dave Isay (Listening Is an Act of Love), Londoners offers up the stories, the gripes, the memories, and the dreams of those in the great and vibrant British metropolis who love it, hate it, live it, left it, and long for it, from a West End rickshaw driver to a Soldier of the Guard at Buckingham Palace to a recovering heroin addict seeing Big Ben for the very first time. Published just in time for the 2012 London Olympic Games, Londoners is a glorious literary celebration of one of the worlds truly great cities.

Books I have loved with a #London setting. One of my favorite cities to explore, and one of my favorite places to revisit in a good book. ❤️ #LitsySpringBreak
@TheKidUpstairs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

KristiAhlers You should check out Aven Ellis. She sets quite a few stories in London. She‘s got a great voice and fun characters. I lived in England years ago and I get homesick for that city. She brings it to life for me. 4y

BarbaraBB Hi! I am travelling through Oregon and Idaho this summer. Do you have any recommendations? I‘d love to hear them... 💕 6y
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB That sounds fun! I‘m from south eastern Idaho. If you‘re going to be in the Idaho Falls/Rexburg area, Heise Hot Springs is fun. In Oregon, Multnomah Falls and the gorge are my favorite. And Powell Books in Portland, of course! For Oregon beaches, I love Astoria, Lincoln City and Newport (with a stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory for ice cream). 6y

The stuff I bought at the other beautiful bookstore, #Foyles at Charing Cross Road. I really wanted something #London themed, so I chose #Londoners. The other one was recommended by the staff, and I love the cover. As a big Paddington fan, I couldn‘t say no to the bookmark, and the bag is also very pretty.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a family book club pick that takes place in London or the Cotswolds? We‘re taking another trip in March and we are trying to pick a book we can all read together in anticipation.

Last year we did Northanger Abbey and it was a hit with all but one of us (@meredith3 apparently is not a JA fan 😣)

Reviewsbylola @Mitch we‘re hoping maybe you have some suggestions! 6y
Meredith3 I suggest the entire Harry Potter series please 🙏🏻 6y
See All 39 Comments
Bklover May I come along on your trip? I‘ll do laundry or something. 6y
Kalalalatja I really want to recommend this, but I know @emilyhaldi has read it already, so that probably won‘t work 6y
BarbaraBB This is a fat one but real English and about London 6y
BarbaraBB Something lighter and enjoyable may be 6y
BarbaraBB And last but not least I can recommend Sarah Waters, for example 6y
julesG Totally off from what the others have recommended 6y
julesG How about this one, 6y
julesG @Meredith3 👏👏👏👏 6y
LeahBergen This one is a classic set in the Cotswolds (and still TBR for me) 6y
LeahBergen And how about a lovely #PersephoneBooks set in London? 6y
LeahBergen Oh, I see @emilyhaldi has already read the Persephone. 😆 6y
Reviewsbylola We need a Litsy trip!! That would be amazing. @Bklover 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve already read it too @Kalalalatja and I absolutely loved it! I think I have it to @emilyhaldi actually. 😂 6y
Reviewsbylola We usually try to keep it under 400 pages. Sarah Waters is a good idea, thank you!! @BarbaraBB 6y
Reviewsbylola Also, I‘m not a huge fan of Dickens but I want to try THe Bleak House. I‘m scared though!! @BarbaraBB 6y
Reviewsbylola Great suggestions, and I‘m not familiar with them. Thanks for the link!! @julesG 6y
Reviewsbylola Great suggestion. I actually didn‘t love Neverwhere though but I bet @meredith3 would! @BookNerd9906 6y
Reviewsbylola Persephone is a good idea though! And CwR sounds really good! @LeahBergen 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola I‘m sure @Meredith3 will hate CWR. 😂😂 6y
Reviewsbylola She‘s hard to please. If it‘s not Harry Potter or Jurassic Park, forget about it! 😂 @LeahBergen 6y
BookwormM Totally light hearted I am sure the Agatha Raisin cosy mystery series is set in the Cotswolds 6y
emilyhaldi I loved that Persephone! 💕 @LeahBergen 6y
emilyhaldi By far my favorite book of 2018!!! @Kalalalatja @Reviewsbylola 6y
Reggie The Humans by Matt Haig takes place in Great Britain. This one takes place in an out of control climate change futuristic apocalyptic Great Britain-Lost Girl by Adam Nevill. 6y
arubabookwoman I loved Capital by John Lancaster. Lots to discuss too. ETA Mispelled author's name-it's Lanchester. (edited) 6y
Dragon I enjoyed this series set in and around London 6y
sammisho Silly, but sweet. It is basically Kate and Will fanfiction. 6y
sammisho Rebecca or My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier. 6y
Reviewsbylola I want to read The Fair Fight and The Royal We! I love both Du Mauriers! @sammisho 6y
Reviewsbylola That‘s on my TBR toon @dragon 6y
Reviewsbylola Great suggestions! @reggie @arubabookwoman @BookwormM Those are all new to me! 6y
Cinfhen Sooo fun!! @Reggie pick would work for #CliFi #Booked2019 6y

Cosyreader @julesG Gay‘s the Word! Great shop - they posted my books to me so I didn‘t have to carry them around all day 😊 6y
julesG @Amy-Laura I think we met about a year ago. Which also means, I've been living without my laptop for a year now. 😉 6y
Cosyreader @julesG wow how have you managed? 6y
julesG @Amy-Laura Got a different one from the insurance money. But it's a second hand laptop and not as good. Unfortunately my husband agreed to get the purchase price of the laptop (which I bought on a special sale) from the insurance company and not the amount of money I'd have needed to get a new exact same laptop. I was short of throttling him for it. Well, I'm saving money for a better one now. 6y

To all of our #London Litsyans, I found this via Twitter and thought you'd definitely be interested in this event. Tickets are free, and the organizer said 1,000 have already been accounted for. @TheLondonBookworm , would you be able to spread the word to everyone on here in the general vicinity? #BookEvents

TheLondonBookworm Omg yes!! Thanks so much for pointing it out I would have totally missed this otherwise :) all signed up hopefully will find some Littens will joint me in a fun book trawl around London Town!!! 8y

Hi Littens! I'm visiting a friend in London for two weeks in March, and any help figuring out some good literary destinations to visit would be great! I've been twice before, so I really would like to see some things off the beaten path this time! 🇬🇧

Sue I'm sure @TheLondonBookworm will have some suggestions 😊 8y
TheLondonBookworm Yes! Always ☺☺ what have you already seen? The London book review shop is pretty cool, or Hatchards? 8y
KafkaKitten @TheLondonBookworm Thanks for the tip! Seems cool 😁 I've seen basically everything super touristy, and I've been to a lot of the literary grave sites at Westminster Abbey and Highgate. I was thinking of checking out the Fitzroy Tavern to drink with Orwell this time too 😜 8y
TheLondonBookworm @KafkaKitten oooh that sounds fun! Depending when your coming I'd check out some of the book shop events, they're usually super cheap or free :) daunt books had some good ones or Piccadilly Waterstones! Charing Cross road has some cute second hand book stores or go to Persephone books near Covent Garden, the French house in soho or Brompton cemetery is cool If that's your thing :) 8y
KafkaKitten @TheLondonBookworm Thanks so much for all the suggestions! My friend that I'm visiting is a huge bookworm too so we'll both have a blast I'm sure! Also yeah, Brompton is on my list of London cemeteries I need to see 😂 I have an odd fascination with them, and vacations are the perfect time to indulge! 💀👻 8y

Ok Londoners! I am invading in 15 days... tell what bookshops and bookish places I need to visit!!

MrBook Can I come? I think I could fit in your overheard compartment bag 😁. I won't make a peep, I promise! 8y
scripturient Definitely Hatchards! :) 8y
Merethebookgal Touring The Globe Theatre was awesome! I'm sure there's tons of Dickens-type things you could visit, but I didn't have time. I stopped by 221B Baker Street to take a pic, but the Sherlock Holmes museum was already closed (though I read wishy-washy reviews on it.) If you like Harry Potter, I did a walking tour that was cool (toursformuggles.com) and going to the Harry Potter studio outside of London was amazing!! 8y

TheLondonBookworm How exciting 😄 I hope you love it here. I'm gonna rattle off a bunch of places that I think you'd love :) so the British Library is a must, Shakespeare's Globe, Waterstones by Picadilly Circus, all the book stores down by Charing Cross, Daunt books in Marlybone, Liberia on Brick Lane, The Brompton or Highgate Cemetary (bit odd but fascinating and beautiful places) the whole of Soho, forbidden planet in the Seven Dials... 8y
Merethebookgal I didn't get to stop by many book shops, but I did have afternoon tea in the basement of a book shop across the street from the British Museum called Tea and Tattle (teaandtattle.com). It wasn't the fanciest tea room, but the tea and food was very good! (Make a reservation, though, because it's a small tea room that fills up.) 8y

Fun Friday photo: I like to read books set in certain places. These shelves are Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Germany. I have a whole shelf of Southern fiction in the other room. @Liberty
