Life of Samuel Johnson | James Boswell

My bookish friend and I had a Dr. Samuel Johnson sort of day today. We started at his house, and then the docent there recommended that we see the Temple Church and surrounding buildings, some of which have Johnson's name on them. Then we came upon this statue in the street!

LeahBergen What a wonderful day! 8y

It's a shame I couldn't get into this one. I've been super busy this week, and I'm taking my not making any time for this book as a sign that it just isn't for me. The writing style is absolutely beautiful and I did make it through about two-thirds, but every time I picked it up I realized I honestly didn't care what happened. It feels like a lot of philosophical ramblings building to nothing. Can we appreciate the name Binx Bolling though?

I don't know if other Littens are as head-over-heels-in-love with the weirdly wonderful works of David Wong as I am, but HIS NEW BOOK IS COMING IN OCTOBER AND I'M SO EXCITED AGHHHHHHHHHHHH (a bookworm's excitement can never be contained and this an appropriate outlet I think)

vivastory I love David Wong, I still need to read his most recent book. 8y
KafkaKitten @vivastory It's so good! I do like the John & Dave books better, but it's a lot of fun. 8y

KafkaKitten @vivastory Me too! Also sad it's going to be the last in the trilogy though. I can't wait! 8y

Tonight's #bookhaul! Kind of bittersweet, though. I saw a movie at the Nuart on Santa Monica Boulevard earlier only to find out that Alias Books around the corner is about to close on March 5th. They're having a 40% off sale on all their books right now though, so go support them before they leave if you're in Los Angeles 😭

Truthfully, it is the fear of exposing my own ignorance which constrains me from mentioning the object of my search... Have 98% of Americans already found what I seek or are they so sunk in everyday mess that not even the possibility of a search has occurred to them? On my honor, I do not know the answer.

After all the accolades, I would be very surprised to not like this. It's spectacular. Heartbreaking and hopeful all at once. Whitehead is a phenomenal writer. If you haven't read this--especially if you're an American citizen--you must.

I love Philip K. Dick, so of course I had to try my hand at his only work outside of science fiction. Of course it's wonderfully written, with sharp wit and vivid descriptions. Strangely (not complaining though), this book almost feels like Bukowski and Salinger got together and came up with a rough outline for the story, and PKD came along and wrote the book. It's an atypical slice-of-life novel for sure.

This was a really fun read! I'm not going to pretend I could wrap my head around every bit of the time travel stuff, but it's still a great book. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who's new to the genre, though. It gets to be a bit of a mindfuck, for lack of a better word. "Out of all the oceans of oceans of you, there is exactly one who is perfectly you. And that's me. And I'm telling you: you are the only you. Does that make any sense?"

A very busy week forced me to take my time with this, and I'm glad I did. I love a good biased narrator, and this book essentially has two of them: Norton, a famed Nobel-winning scientist whose memoir you're reading, and Ronald, his colleague and editor, who writes footnotes that tend to foreshadow future events in Norton's life. I expected it to be phenomenally written because of A Little Life, and Yanagihara didn't disappoint.

Okay, so I had heard this was a depressing book, but DAMN. Very unlikeable characters (which I'm fine with and also amused by), and very ahead of its time. I'm glad I finally got around to reading this! Love the classics ❤

Hi Littens! I'm visiting a friend in London for two weeks in March, and any help figuring out some good literary destinations to visit would be great! I've been twice before, so I really would like to see some things off the beaten path this time! 🇬🇧

KafkaKitten @TheLondonBookworm Thanks for the tip! Seems cool 😁 I've seen basically everything super touristy, and I've been to a lot of the literary grave sites at Westminster Abbey and Highgate. I was thinking of checking out the Fitzroy Tavern to drink with Orwell this time too 😜 8y
TheLondonBookworm @KafkaKitten oooh that sounds fun! Depending when your coming I'd check out some of the book shop events, they're usually super cheap or free :) daunt books had some good ones or Piccadilly Waterstones! Charing Cross road has some cute second hand book stores or go to Persephone books near Covent Garden, the French house in soho or Brompton cemetery is cool If that's your thing :) 8y
KafkaKitten @TheLondonBookworm Thanks so much for all the suggestions! My friend that I'm visiting is a huge bookworm too so we'll both have a blast I'm sure! The perfect book for a rainy day in with some hot coffee and a warm blanket. ☺️ Murakami has created a true delight for the senses. In my opinion, you should be listening to the pieces he and Ozawa mention as you read for full effect. Beautifully put together, and a must for any music lover. 🎶

Just a little PSA for all the Littens! Your nearest Barnes and Noble is probably doing a holiday book drive right now that will continue until Christmas, and it should benefit an organization or charity in your area. My location is giving books to the pediatric wing at our local hospital, and these are some things I've given so far. If you stop by a B&N, ask about it! It's always nice to give back, especially with books! ❤️

I was hoping we would learn from Brexit and other political messes going on around the world right now, but I was wrong. I just turned 21 so this was my first time voting for president. So sad it had to end this way. I can only hope the world pulls together and unifies against this man's open racism, misogyny, and severe nationalism. Let's learn from it this time.

Unfortunately, this one was a no go... I'm just so bored with it about a third of the way in. The narration is disjointed and kind of obnoxious and it has no apparent plot. The concept is cute and unique, so maybe I'll be in the mood and pick it back up at some point but for now, no thanks.

Meh. I was really into it in the beginning, but segments of sloppy, awkward narration and abrupt shifts in tone took away some of the scare factor for me. Not scary enough to frighten me into loving it, and the characters were a little too underdeveloped in my opinion for me to enjoy it for other reasons. I did really love some of the incredibly creepy moments though. PS-I'm brave and finished this in the dark past midnight 😉☠️
