Hogwarts was never like this. George R.R. Martin Sad, hilarious, beautiful, and essential to anyone who cares about modern fantasy. Cory DoctorowThis gripping novel draws on the conventions of contemporary and classic fantasy novels in order to upend them... an unexpectedly moving coming-of-age story. The New YorkerThe best urban fantasy in years. A.V. ClubQuentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, hes secretly fascinated with a series of childrens fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestsellerThe Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. The world building and magic system were interesting. The characters were not very likeable, especially the protagonist.
I'm not sure if I recommend this.

It is rare for me to say that I liked the movie or show better than the book, but in this case, I would say I liked the show a lot better. I felt like this was rushed compared to the show which surprises me. It just didn‘t capture the characters like I remembered them from watching the show. But, maybe if I had read it first, I would feel differently. Great story, just didn‘t love it as much as I thought I would.

I found this book INCREDIBLY hard to slog through. I couldn't reconcile what were clearly homages to Narnia, paired with very adult situations. It jarred with me and soiled my childhood idea of Narnia and other fantasy books. I'm all for grown up fantasy like The Witcher, but this book doesn't sit right in either genre. The authors actual writing prowess was the only thing that kept me reading but I will not be reading the sequel.

I‘ve been trying to get my husband to pick a book for me, instead of just giving me gift certificates, for years! Supposedly The Magicians is a must read for those who enjoyed Harry Potter. I loved Harry Potter when I was 12, but tried rereading it recently and just couldn‘t. I‘ve decided to check out The Magicians, just because I‘m so happy my husband finally chose a book for me. 🪄

Much like the previous Magicians comic, this is fine. A new class of magicians at Brakebills and now they've thrown hedge witches into the mix because *gasp* assistance is needed. But everything happens much too quickly and I don't feel invested in this story at all.

I really wanted to like this but by the end I hated it! The idea seemed great. I loved the school of magic, and entering this magical land. The problem was the characters. I hated every single person by the end of this. They were immature, and just overall hateful people that had this great opportunity and wasted it. Just not the book for me. #bookspinbingo

This is highly recommended for

A.) fans of Lev Grossman‘s The Magicians trilogy
B.) fans of Syfy‘s The Magicians show
C.) anyone who is not familiar with A and B, but thinks “college kids at Murder Hogwarts” sounds intriguing.

Vol. 1 of this comic book continuation of the novel trilogy‘s universe is GREAT. When elite magic school Brakebills starts admitting hedge witches just as a magic war begins, shit gets real.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I kind of loved the way that, even when talking about how awful the murderous villain is, no one wanted to misgender them. 4y

Tbh, I‘ve been wanting to watch the show for awhile and my friend (who loves both) tells me that the first book and season are quite similar but after that go their seperate ways.

I find it slightly hilarious that this gets compared everywhere to HP when the Narnia comparisons seem more obvious also - the reviews of people who loathed it on goodreads are 👌

I‘m halfway and enjoying it.

Ummm.... I really, really wanted to like this book. It is advertised as a more mature Harry Potter, I love Harry Potter, the only way this was even related to Harry Potter is that the characters had magical abilities. And more mature, yep, it sure was, they talked about body parts a lot. I really wanted to like the characters, but I just didn‘t. I kept hoping it would get better, but alas it did not. I personally would skip it!!

The world it created was interesting, but the main character is obnoxious and self-centered. I‘m just not interested in seeing a magical world become a depressing drudgery.

Lev Grossman just set his profile picture to this stick figure drawing & I am DYING. 😂😂😂 It‘s ridiculous how much it looks like him! I just...I can‘t.

Also, this book‘s Litsy rating is a TRAVESTY.

VioletBramble It is considered the weakest book in trilogy. Quentin is extremely whiney in this one. I love the tv series though. That stick figure does look exactly like Lev Grossman. 5y
monalyisha @VioletBramble I don‘t think “the worst book in the trilogy” is a curse; I think they‘re all great! But I hated the tv show. 😆 5y
Pruzy Don‘t know what that says about me that I didn‘t find him whiney 😬 5y
See All 14 Comments
monalyisha @Pruzy 😅 I think it‘s a frequent complaint but I also think his immaturity is central to his character; it‘s not like Lev wrote him without intention, so the fact that he needs to *seriously* grow & change didn‘t ruin it for me. It just meant that he was a dynamic character. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
Pruzy @monalyisha Exactly! That‘s a great way to put it. Everyone forgets he was fresh out of high school at the start of the book! 5y
VioletBramble Quentin definitely grows throughout the trilogy. I personally don‘t mind his whining. It helped me identify with him. But based on reviews he is the reason so many people never finish or dislike the first book. 5y
LibrarianRyan I love him. He is such a nice guy. We picked the Magicians as our One book one summer title and he did an intro video for my libraries website. I hate to say I thought the book was boring. 5y
monalyisha @LibrarianRyan @VioletBramble @Pruzy I had a weird experience where I didn‘t think I liked ”The Magicians” the first time I read it. Then, the second book came out & I was strangely...excited??? So, I went back and read the first one again & LOVED IT. I ended up adoring the series & have been chasing read-alikes ever since! (edited) 5y
monalyisha @Pruzy @LibrarianRyan @VioletBramble Maybe everyone just needs a reread. 😉💕 5y
monalyisha Updated info with art cred straight from the stick figure‘s mouth: “Major personal/professional milestone: I‘m interviewing Randall “xkcd” Munroe onstage Thursday night at Cooper Union, so he made a stick-figure drawing of me.” 5y

Scochrane26 It was marketed as HP but is actually much more like Narnia. Also, I‘ve heard the tv show is very different from the books—many seem to like it better. (edited) 6y
