And the Band Played On
And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, 20th-Anniversary Edition | Randy Shilts
Upon it's first publication twenty years ago, And The Band Played on was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of investigatve reporting. An international bestseller, a nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and made into a critically acclaimed movie, Shilts' expose revealed why AIDS was allowed to spread unchecked during the early 80's while the most trusted institutions ignored or denied the threat. One of the few true modern classics, it changed and framed how AIDS was discussed in the following years. Now republished in a special 20th Anniversary edition, And the Band Played On remains one of the essential books of our time.

A behemoth of fine journalistic writing. Shilts was a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle when AIDS first began to ravage the city. The disease soon shone a spotlight on the stunning health disparities in the US as the federal government, scientific and public health institutions as well as blood banks refused to initially take seriously what they condescended as “the gay virus.” Shilts later succumbed to AIDS, seven years after publishing.

Bk3 of #JumpStart2023 is finally done! This is over 31hrs long, but so worth it. About the beginning of the AIDS crisis, it infuriated me, made me think & most of all made me so sad. The infighting & bullshit from gov, doctors & the gay community is just unfathomable. The fact it hit them first complicated the issue unnecessarily & caused so many needless deaths.😢 #BookspinBingo #Booked2023 #AboutAPandemic #NonFictionBingo2023 #IWillSurvive👇

Clwojick I love your bullet journal pages! ❤️ 2y
Lizpixie @Clwojick thank you! It‘s taking me longer than I thought to get it done, I‘m soooo not an artist, but I‘m trying to get at least 4 transferred into my bujo from my list every day. My fault for going overboard once again!🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

#JumpStart2023 Spent today trying to sort through all my 2023 Challenges for my bujo(why do I do this to myself every year??🤦🏻‍♀️)and listening to this NF audiobook about the start of the AIDS crisis 40yrs ago. It‘s making me so mad it‘s getting harder to concentrate. I knew the first years were bad, but the apathy of the government, doctors & even the community it hit the hardest is just unfathomable. Prolonged deaths by the thousands😠

TrishB This book made me so sad and mad too. 2y
Ruthiella I just read this last month and the sheer waste of human lives is heartbreaking. 💔 2y

I‘ve been meaning to read the tagged book for years, finally getting to it for the 40th anniversary of the start of the AIDS epidemic. So infuriating and so so sad🏳️‍🌈🫶 #JumpStart2023

Now I have them stacked & labeled in their own spot in my library.👍 (edited) 2y
Lizpixie @Clwojick I‘m so happy with my journal! They brought the Bullet Journal special edition in black & this blush pink this year. Not much of a choice, I would‘ve preferred a yellow but🤷🏻‍♀️Where I bought it had the option of whatever you wanted on it in foil(gold, rose or silver)or colour. “Everybody subsequently agreed that the news media should have offered better coverage of the epidemic much earlier, and that the federal government should have done much, much more. By the time everyone agreed to this however it was too late. Instead people died. Tens of thousands of them.”

Hard hitting, comprehensive & tragic. Over 600 pages but it read fast.

Read for #Booked2022 - About the AIDS epidemic. Also works for #NonfictionNovember

Amiable Oh, this book is SOO good. I recommend to everyone I can. 2y
Cinfhen I‘ve heard this is fabulous! Maybe I‘ll read it for #Booked2023 #AboutAPandemic 2y
Reggie I was telling a coworker this week about how that gay couple goes to a fortune teller and she spells out Toxoplasmosis. And one of the guys thinks she‘s a hack because only cats get that. But what they didn‘t know yet was that the disease destroyed their immunity so bad they started getting diseases humans never had to worry about before. Also, that young man who had that sheep‘s disease from California. Rip Randy Shilts. (edited) 2y
Ruthiella @Reggie Yes, I remember that. At first I thought he included it because it was ridiculous. All those young men in their prime, including Shilts. 💔 2y

This book is absolutely gripping. It was also completely infuriating to read, not only for what happened during the AIDS epidemic, but how literally every single mistake is being repeated now with Covid (and monkeypox). Everyone should read this book, if you didn‘t read it back when it came out in 1988.

Amiable Oh my gosh, I read this a few years ago and was totally mesmerized. SUCH a good book! 2y

This book about the AIDS epidemic was a powerful read in its own right, but absolutely infuriating when read against the backdrop of everything we‘ve gone through in the past two years. I was under the gun to get this finished for a work book club- I will come back to it in a few years for a more careful read.

Kinda topical to read this during a pandemic. This book goes through the AIDS epidemic starting before we even had a name for it and goes through the politics and people surrounding it all. A lot of details here, almost anything you‘d want to know about the epidemic.

Litsy has been such a positive influence for my intentional intersectional reading habits! I‘m glad to re-energize these choices since I‘ve been less focused on #diversevoices lately.

58 books in 2020
6 Black
5 Other POC
6 LGBTQIA+ (could be more ... not all authors put that front and center)
0 Indigenous 😰

2 Black authors in my currents reads as well

Emilymdxn Fantastic! We all have more we can do and hopefully being reflective halfway through the year can help. I agree it‘s difficult to assess LGBT authors, it‘s impossible to be exact on any criteria I guess 4y
ChasingOm Thanks for joining us! It‘s definitely hard to find some data especially when there are still stigmas attaches to some identities. 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Emilymdxn Thanks for offering us the opportunity to reflect together! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ChasingOm Thanks for starting this thread. Yeah, personally I think no one has an obligation to share their specific personal details. But I‘m sure I could find more gossipy info if I wanted to dig around. But I don‘t. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @keithmalek What?? How does this relate and did you mean to post it here? 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KatieDid927 Not everyone is obligated to share those details. Some are out and proud, some are private. That‘s okay by me. 🌈 4y
keithmalek Never mind. 4y
KatieDid927 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Totally agree! Just not sure how accurate my tally would be. 4y
Reggie @KatieDid927 maybe your problem was the same as mine because some of my black authors overlapped with my LGBTQ numbers. I just separated everything so that way it didn‘t double my books. 4y
KatieDid927 @Reggie Part of it is I just genuinely don‘t know how all authors choose to identify, which is okay! They don‘t all need to let readers know, but it makes it harder to categorize. Also with people like Langston Hughes, who many thought to be queer but we don‘t actually know for sure. Should I count him or not? Another Litten suggested counting representation in the text regardless of author identity, because it‘s still representation. I‘ll ponder. 4y
KatieDid927 @Reggie But yes valid points as authors like Roxane Gay would fall under both categories. 4y

I‘m reading this and Pale Rider about the Spanish Flu epidemic. Perhaps not the wisest decision for my mental health, but fascinating. So many parallels with our current pandemic. Politics chosen over prudent policies. The push & pull between individual libertities vs. safety of the general public. I‘m taking the threat seriously but live in a community where not everyone is. Things start opening up on Tues. & I‘m bracing for the 2nd wave.

JSW This is such a great book. I read it years ago and it was my intro to journalistic, narrative nonfiction done right. 4y
SamAnne @JSW I thought I had read it but realize I hadn‘t. Had read many other pieces. I went to college in 1985 and the AIDS crisis was front and center. So much respect for Randy Shilts. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I saw a lot of the same parallels. I‘ve read our June book already, so I‘m planning Pale Rider then. 4y
Amiable It really is a phenomenal book. 4y
plemmdog I just finished it. Devastating. I think I liked “Noon Wine” even better, which I wasn‘t expecting. I read Shilts‘ book the year it came out, when I was in my 20s, and while there are a lot of similarities, the rapidity of which this virus kills terrifies me, as a physician. At least families could be present at the deathbed back in the 80s. 4y

This is 600 pages of intense details, drawn from thousands of interviews with 900+ people. Despite being published in 1987, it remains one of the most definitive books on the history of AIDS and the gay community. The public health and epidemiology parallels with today are strong, as are the moments of political wrangling and protest. 5 stars

quirkyreader I read this when it first came out. What‘s unsettling is that there is still no cure. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @quirkyreader It is unsettling, although treatment is much improved. At the time of this book, there was practically nothing. But after all this time, there‘s no vaccine. It‘s a dose of reality as we discuss a C19 vaccine as if it‘s a done deal. 4y
Reggie I remember when the couple went to the tarot card reader and she spells out that the guy has toxoplasmosis. That the boyfriend thinks she‘s a fraud cause only cats get it. Little did they know. I read this book over 15 years ago. Thinking about some of it still makes me angry. 4y

Took me three days to finish as work has been bonkers and I haven‘t had much time to read. I was determined to power through tonight. Politicians - I am so angry at the organised bigotry and hatred that led to so many deaths, or even just the apathy that meant people with power generally didn‘t care. 💔💔💔 A book that will stay with me.
Thanks @Reggie for recommending.

Reggie I remember the gay couple who went to the fortune teller and she spelled out toxoplasmosis but the bf was like what a crock because only cats get that. That none of us knew how amazing our immune system is. How that boy later in the book has a cryptococcal infection that is only found in livestock. How testing blood for HIV was too expensive so only one out of the numerous blood banks did it. How that grandma who was straight couldn‘t figure out 5y

Megabooks @TrishB And I‘m hoping, that if this is what does it, since the research was done at a publicly funded university, it won‘t be as costly as if big pharma makes the breakthrough. 5y

This book is so good, but so bloody frustrating and heart breaking.

ravenlee Wasn‘t the Ryan White story (I think that‘s the name) part of the turning point? I remember in the early-mid 90s it was such a big deal. 5y
cathysaid Wow. There's a gut check. 5y
Kalalalatja Ouch 5y

TrishB @ravenlee I‘m not familiar with that story yet, still in 1982. 5y
TrishB @cathysaid @Kalalalatja the whole book so far has just made me go 😮 5y
cathysaid @ravenlee I think part of the attention came from Elton John playing at Ryan‘s funeral as well. 5y

At over 600 pages, this one is a commitment to read. But it‘s so freaking good and holding my attention much better than most fiction lately! I like non-fiction but don‘t find myself reaching for it too often. This one is well written and a very interesting topic. Loving it so far! #bookandabath

Purrfectpages This was one of my favorite movies growing up. So powerful. I didn‘t even realize it was inspired by a book back then. 7y
AmyG Amazing book. Powerful and heartbreaking. 7y

🎉🎉🎉🎉🏆🏆 I started at 8 PM Friday night and finished 24 hours at 7:45 PM Sunday!! 🏆🏆🎊🎊🎊🎊📚📚

I spent a fair bit of time listening ATBPO today. This book is so amazing. Other readathon highlights are finishing the new Al Franken and Perfect Days (highly recommend both), and I'm also close to finishing Pretty Is and The Throwback Special in print! I've also read three short stories from two collections. Keep at it everyone! #24in48

PSA: Everyone! Make sure you're making screen shots of your stopwatch often. My stopwatch just reset itself sometime in the 27 minutes since I took this 😱😱 (I know it's 27 minutes because I posted it to Twitter.)

I also won a prize at hour 30 for my late-night munching. 🎉🎊🎊🎉 I shared Henry's snack choice as well: Royal Canin Mini Special. I've reading lots of familiar names, so be sure to check!

Keep on reading! #24in48 #readathon

Robothugs Congrats!!! 😄 I screenshot because I get paranoid this will happen to me. Keep going, you're almost there!! 7y

It's been a reading goal of mine to finish this book. I immensely enjoyed the HBO adaptation from roughly 20 years ago, so now I'm listening to the #audible edition. I've gotten through two chapters while eating dinner and doing some #audiowalking with Henry. #24in48 #readathon #audiobook

HardcoverHearts It's a masterpiece and a heart wrenching book. ❤️ 7y
Megabooks @HardcoverHearts I'm so excited to finally be reading it. I'm on chapter 9! 7y

I've always wanted to learn more about the AIDS epidemic because it's part of queer history.

It's a Litsy pairing - the fiction book belongs to me because of #litfluence. I got the nonfiction book at a library book sale - something that I wouldn't even thought of doing without Litsy.

AIDS isn't an easy subject, but as a Lyme disease patient I'm hoping I gain ideas that help me be more of an activist for Lyme patients. #fightLyme

I don't have many books about politics, but this is one of the few and it is great. I had to read it for a class in high school, and it was the first time in my rather sheltered upbringing that I really remember realizing that our modern political system can deliberately ignore and demonize an entire group of people. It turned my world upside down. #politicsandbooks #augustphotochallenge

Woke up an hour ago while it was storming, scared & angry after getting fired by my biggest client yesterday. The storm has stopped but I can't fall back to sleep. I guess I'll just do some not-so-light reading instead.

On 6/5/1981, the CDC reported a series of cases of rare pneumonia - later known as some of the first AIDS cases. Randy Shilts tells this story in an amazing book everyone (but especially young Americans) should read. I also threw in a couple of legendary plays inspired by the epidemic. (Angels FTW)

Pickpick

The definitive history of the AIDS epidemic. Another book that changed my life as a teen; it was safe to read without having to make statements about who I was, and it gave me a sense of community when I was isolated. Still relevant today.
