It was all right
It was all right
I kind of fell of the bandwagon with posting on this one. Things have been a little crazy!!!
In the end, this book was just okay for me. There were parts that were interesting, but there was also way too much wandering around aimlessly - I never was sure what the actual point of this story was. Plus, I didn't particularly warm to David, who seemed conceited and not overly bright haha Some of the adventures were fun, but I didn't enjoy this ⬇
(thru ch21) - I don't know why, but this book just isn't really holding my interest much. There doesn't seem to really be a plot?? Just wandering around from place to place haha And the chapter where David was “stranded“ on the island because he was too dumb to check and see if he could cross when the tide was out... 😑
It's not a terrible read, but I find myself rather ambivalent towards it. What do you all think?
(thru ch 13) Sorry I have kind of fallen off the face of the earth with this readalong!! Okay, so I literally had to do some research on the Jacobites and that whole deal. Stevenson has a much higher opinion of my historical knowledge than I deserve 😂
While this story is perfectly fine, I'm not in love with it or anything. But I can definitely see it appealing to its target audience with gold! Danger! Shipwrecks! Sword fights!
⬇
(thru ch5) Well, I think we may be closing in on the kidnapping part of our story!! What's up with David's uncle? That almost-murder scene was actually a little terrifying!!!!

ch 1 - David is off to make his fortune!! Or maybe find out he has one when he meets his rich... relative?? I quite loved his sweet neighbor sending him off with three gifts (round, square, cubical haha) However, I'm seeming to find mixed results when I try to see if you can actually make Lily of the Valley tea, so maybe hold off on using that as a cure-all!
Looking forward to seeing where this adventures leads!!

My copy is from 1932! Looking forward to this one!
Home sick today, so I‘ve already gotten in the first chapter (and the preface and dedication) of this #randomclassics @TheAromaofBooks
March's #RandomClassic is Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. I've never read this one, but I'm anticipating something similar to his other novels - quite a lot of rollicking adventures meant to appeal to young lads in the 1880s, with a splash of history thrown in. There are 30 chapters, so we'll read a chapter a day starting March 1 and actually finish by the end of the month for once!!
Let me know if you're interested in reading this one!!
This was a fun story, but I don‘t think it will be particularly memorable. I wasn‘t expecting the whole story to take place in Scotland, but I definitely enjoyed the Scottish setting. It didn‘t hold a lot of suspense for me; I always felt things were going to work out for David, no matter the difficulties along the way.
📷: I finished listening while watering the sweet corn patch and observing the bees.

Day 287.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
Not a great month for #BookSpinBingo in April 2021. Left free spaces open and didn‘t make much headway on the rest. On to May.
Perhaps not quite as swashbuckling as Treasure Island, but a great setting and time period.

According to Goodreads' summary of Kidnapped, the Jacobite Rebellion occurred the same year that World War II ended 🤔
I was not as impressed by the book as I thought I would be. Maybe, this is because I read this book as an adult and not as a child and hence the plots seem predictable to me.
1️⃣ I was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1985 and lived there until 2020. 🏴
2️⃣ I now live in London, England with my fiance. 💏
3️⃣ i have two sisters and a brother, I'm the oldest. 🧓
4️⃣ The first book (that I remember) was read to me by my dad as a bedtime story over a few nights, that book was 'Kidnapped' by Robert Lewis Stevenson. 📚

I really enjoyed this historical novel. I learned some Scottish history in the process. David Balfour and Alan Breck Stewart make for a fun duo. I agree with the critics that consider this Stevenson's best work.
1.) With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles 🎶
2.) Some cooler weather and less blistering heat! 🥵

Today‘s author spotlight: Robert Louis Stevenson! Born today in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, he died at 44. He married in San Francisco & had no children together. He was good friends with Hawaii‘s King Kalākaua. He was a much-loved advocate of the Samoan people, & his adopted Samoan name was Tusitala, or “Teller of Tales”. They buried him atop Mt. Vaea. He was excluded from literary canon until recent decades. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow
I‘m enjoying the abridged BBC radio Kidnapped on YouTube, it has a stirring Scottish atmosphere with fiddle music interludes 🌊🎻⛰🏔⚔️🗡🎶🎵 😊
“Well, well,” said the lawyer, when I had quite done, “this is a great epic, a great #Odyssey of yours.

Finished the audiobook today!
Thank you @Ddzmini for the #ShortStorySwap book!
An epic tale through the Scottish highlands to gain his rightful inheritance!!!
Spent some time in the Scottish Highlands recently, and it‘s brought me back to Kidnapped with fresh eyes and deeper understanding.
Jane Eyre... 😜😆😆😆😜
Who's coming to save you guys?
LOL !!
I love Robert Louis Stevenson's writing and Kidnapped, I believe, is his best book. He gives us the character of David Balfour who you can't help but wish that things would go his way and he would come into his inheritance. It is set in the 18th century Scottish highlands and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction.

I thought I had an old copy of Treasure Island but maybe I sold it before I moved cross-country? I don‘t know where it is. In any case, I have this lovely vintage edition of “Kidnapped”! #swashbuckler #oldcoolbooks @Linsy
I had to search hard for a #Swashbuckler on my shelves.

This poor little 21 year old library castoff seemed a fitting candidate for my first freehanded experiment in re-covering a book. I don‘t have any glue handy but eventually I‘ll get some so I can make prettier labels for the putting the title on and maybe cover art.
In any case, I figured I couldn‘t make it look any *worse* ...and it turned out pretty well....except that I labelled it upside down.😅
#Anchor #HopIntoSpring - I have almost no books set at sea for some reason! This is the only one I could find with any relation to ships and anchors! I collect these readers digest editions and found this one a few weeks ago! 🌊🌊🌊
Kidnapped with wonderful illustrations by N. C. Wyeth. 💜

Accurate. 😂
Being kidnapped...one thing I don't need to worry about now. Not book related, but this sign I saw today made me smile. 😉
Maybe I would have liked this book better when I read it as a kid. But somehow I doubt that. I have never been a big fan of adventures like this one.
However, I did like the dialogues between David en Alan. They were very real, Stevenson worked out their friendship and its ups and downs very good. #1001books
Adopted by yours truly 💃

I'm at work so all I have is my phone, but it's loaded with iBooks and Overdrive & Cloud Library loans from my local library! I hope the aliens have wi-fi 👽😱 #FunFridayPhoto
I always have a book on my phone so I can read on my lunch break, or whenever I have spare time away from home. Since I'm only reading in fits and starts, my "part-time" read, as I call it, is taking FOREVER! I started reading Kidnapped about two months ago and I'm only about half done! I shouldn't complain: Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop was such a struggle to read that it took me over half a year! #slowread #ReadJanuary
Calming myself with things I love, when reading's not an option: Scotland, podcasts, and illustration ~> Now I've rediscovered Stevenson via the BBC4 Bookclub and fallen for Henn Kim.
I love the variety at used book sales and always come home with an electric mix. #usedbooks #augustphotochallenge
