I‘m enjoying some quiet with a book and an iced coffee in the hammock this morning. I‘ve barely made any time to read this book this month, so I‘m trying to make a bit of progress.

I read a few more pages of Quartet in Autumn today while filling the overhead bin (upper right photo) and found this unfamiliar word. Apparently, Marcia is having a tin of sardines originally for the cat.

pilchard: a small, edible, commercially valuable marine fish of the herring family

Ruthiella I feel like people ate weird food in the 1950s…particularly in Barbara Pym novels but also just generally. 😬 Lots of canned food and things in aspic. 5mo
rwmg Same species apparently, but if it's longer than 6 inches it's a pilchard, 6 inches or less then it's a sardine. 5mo
Tamra I have this one stacked and I‘ve only heard good things about it! 5mo
Daisey @Tamra This one is not as engaging to me as Excellent Women, but I‘m still appreciating Pym‘s description of character. 5mo
Tamra @Daisey I want to get to that one too! 5mo

This was an incredibly well told story of two Pakistani American teens and their families. Although the main story is when they‘re high school seniors, we learn a lot of family history for both. I felt many emotions while experiencing the lives of both Salahudin and Noor. They face some very difficult situations but come through with hope in the end.

Daisey 📷: We harvested wheat and started putting up straw this week, which means I‘ve been busy with very little reading or listening time. I finally managed to finish this book while running some farm errands this morning before we unloaded these loads of straw. #BooksOnTheFarm 5mo
BarbaraBB Great photo! The book sounds very good too. 5mo
Crazeedi So much work you have to do, I'm in awe 5mo

Caryl I read this one recently with my book club. The audiobook was excellent! 5mo
JazzFeathers Sounds like something I'd like to read 😁 5mo
Daisey @Crazeedi It definitely makes for some tiring days! 5mo
Daisey @Caryl I agree! 5mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers It was really good, but it was also definitely YA. Lots of tough issues for teenagers. 5mo

I‘m giving this one a pick, but it‘s not an enthusiastic one. I really enjoyed the food aspects and the narrator‘s growth over the course of the story, but I wasn‘t really satisfied with the murder mystery aspect. I‘ll be curious to see the Camp Litsy discussion.

📷: I listened to quite a bit of this one around the farm and at home, including checking cows a couple days.

squirrelbrain I agree with your review - looking forward to the discussion. 6mo

Complete Sherlock Holmes | Arthur Conan Doyle

I‘ve been back to work on the family farm all week, mostly doing maintenance with my dad, and haven‘t listened to an audiobook since last Saturday. Today I did a bit of work around the sheds by myself and listened to “The Adventure of the Yellow Face.” I didn‘t remember this one at all, and appreciated the explanation of a story Sherlock didn‘t solve.

Texreader The farm is so beautiful 6mo
Daisey @Texreader It really is right now! We‘ve been getting a good amount of rain so everything is so green and the corn is growing so quickly. 6mo
BarbaraBB That looks so romantic but it will be hard work! 6mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB Lol! Yeah, romantic is never the word I would use. I love a lot of it, but it is hard, dirty work. I commented the other day to a friend that farm work absolutely makes me appreciate how although teaching is stressful, it doesn‘t leave me covered in dirt & grease with bruises on an almost daily basis. 6mo

Amadis of Gaul | Garci Rodriguez De Montalvo
post image

I‘ve spent several hours the last few days listening to Amadis of Gaul, and I‘m halfway through. I‘ll admit that I‘m not always completely focused on the story, but I do recognize all the main characters now and a lot of the action is repetitive. It‘s clear by now Amadis is the best and his love of Oriana is the strongest and most pure. Still 2 more books to go . . .

Daisey ?: I listened while doing some farm work (disassembling parts of a corn head that went through a fire), walking with Lúthien, driving, and snuggling LaGata this evening.

Published in 1957, this reads as an immediate view of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and flight of refugees. It‘s also completely a 1950s warning against communism. I was very much invested in the stories of these people who fought for and then fled their homeland.

🎧 I listened to the audio (a few hours while disking today) and found it bearable but not great.

Texreader Excellent book. And tough work today!! 1y
Daisey @Texreader Agree about the book, but as for the work, this was the easiest job of the day and only one with AC. Plus, I got to listen to my book. 1y

I‘m trying something new today! Although I‘ve known burdock a long time, I finally took the time to dig up some roots.

I‘ve perused this book multiple times over the last few years without reviewing it. I haven‘t compared it carefully to other references, but I find it to be a useful book. It doesn‘t include recipes other than some basic suggestions, but it seems a good starting point for identification and ideas.

Tamra The burdock looks a bit like Stick Man, a favorite. 😊 1y
Daisey @Tamra 😂 It does! 1y
SamAnne This is an invasive on my property! I‘ve done a few things with it but not much. 1y
Daisey @SamAnne I believe it! We moved the cattle away from this property for a few years and it‘s gone a bit crazy; which meant it was in places easier to dig than before. I don‘t know that I‘ll do much with it either, but it was interesting to try. 1y

This was an enjoyable and entertaining listen. I cringed for Molly through many events in the first half and agree with some reviewers that the second half went a bit too quickly. I appreciated the found family aspect. I‘m still a bit torn on the epilogue, but the story kept me intrigued.

📷: I listened while I watered sweet corn, picked blackberries, and wandered through the woods with Luthien. #BooksOnTheFarm

This was a fun story, but I don‘t think it will be particularly memorable. I wasn‘t expecting the whole story to take place in Scotland, but I definitely enjoyed the Scottish setting. It didn‘t hold a lot of suspense for me; I always felt things were going to work out for David, no matter the difficulties along the way.

📷: I finished listening while watering the sweet corn patch and observing the bees.
