A Raisin in the Sun | Lorraine Hansberry
post image

Today‘s author spotlight: Lorraine Hansberry! Born in Chicago in 1930, she passed away from cancer in NYC at 34. The tagged play made her the first African-American playwright on Broadway; she became the youngest one and only fifth woman to win the prestigious NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. She inspired Nina Simone‘s “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black”. James Baldwin set up a meeting between her & RFK. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Hooked_on_books I played Taboo once and was partnered with someone I didn‘t know. The word I had to get him to say was “raisin.” So I said, “a blank in the sun” and he got it immediately. The other team was perplexed and clearly not bookish. So glad I had a bookish partner! 5y

Born in England in 1819, she died at 61 in London. She is considered one of Victorian Literature‘s titans. She wrote 7 novels, known for their realism; some consider Middlemarch the English language‘s greatest novel! She‘s buried at London‘s Highgate Cemetery. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

LibrarianRyan I like Silas Marner much more than Middle March 5y
Leftcoastzen Yay ,George! 5y
Moonprismpower @LibrarianRyan I read Silas Marner and has high hopes but found I didn‘t care for it. I read it as an adult having as a child watched a Steve Martin movie based on the story. What part did you like best? 5y
LibrarianRyan @Moonprismpower I had not seen the movie before I read the book but it is cute. I really loved this curmudgeon of a old man taking in a baby and raising it. He hates everything but this little melts his heat and he gets to feel love and the loss of love. 5y

Today‘s author spotlight: Robert Louis Stevenson! Born today in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, he died at 44. He married in San Francisco & had no children together. He was good friends with Hawaii‘s King Kalākaua. He was a much-loved advocate of the Samoan people, & his adopted Samoan name was Tusitala, or “Teller of Tales”. They buried him atop Mt. Vaea. He was excluded from literary canon until recent decades. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

LapReader If you are ever in Samoa go visit his house and lush gardens. It‘s stunning and the Samoan guide is so informative and sings a song about him unaccompanied by anything and it‘s very stirring. Would have liked to hike to his grave but we had the kids with us and we don‘t think they would have made it. I‘ll post some pics later and tag you. 5y
MrBook @LapReader Very cool! Please do! 5y
MrsMalaprop That‘s very cool @LapReader 👏. Would you recommend a trip to Samoa, RLS aside? 5y

LapReader Yes @MrsMalaprop it‘s a bright and friendly country. You are forced to relax because everything eventually gets done but at a very slow pace. Our kids got to play with and eat like local kids and we all loved the warm water. The ‘Bali belly‘ not so much. 5y
Leftcoastzen Love this photo of RLS! 5y
Andrew65 A true classic author! 5y
JazzFeathers One of my favourite authors 😍 l often wonder what business did Stevenson have living in the 1800s. He's such a modern author. 5y
JazzFeathers @Leftcoastzen It is a lovely photo. So modern. Like him. 5y

Two Lives | Vikram Seth
post image

Today‘s author spotlight: Vikram Seth! The 67-year-old was born in Calcutta, India. He studied at Oxford & Stanford. He was commissioned by the English National Opera to write a Greek myth-based libretto, which was first performed in 1994. He received a Q9.4 mil advance for his novel “Two Lives”, far more than the 6a8,000 for “A Suitable Boy”. He lives in poet George Herbert‘s former home. He is gay & an activist. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Amiable LOVED “A Suitable Boy.“ Have been awaiting a sequel! 5y
ljuliel Holy Smokes ! That‘s a lot of money for one book. I know nothing about what authors make, so maybe lots of them get million dollar deals ? 5y
BookFreakOut @ljuliel Based on some discussion I've seen (among YA authors) a more typical advance would be $5000-15,000/book for a debut, the splashy bug deals are uncommon but often more visible. 5y
See All 7 Comments
BookFreakOut @ljuliel *big deals, can't type today! And I believe advances are typically split into 3 payments: contract signed, book delivered, book published. Minus agent percentage if applicable and taxes each time, many say it's hard to quit the day job because the payments are infrequent and you never know what kind of advance the next book might get. 5y
ljuliel Thanks for the info @BookFreakOut . I guess I‘ve never heard anything about dollar amounts. I suppose it‘d depend on the author, how popular, etc. like Stephen King probably gets millions for every book .. it‘d be a great job if you could break through with a bestseller , but hard if you kept writing and never hit it big. 5y
ValerieAndBooks A Suitable Boy is one of my favorites and have been long awaiting the sequel! @ljuliel @BookFreakOut I actually just finished reading a book that covers writers and money and things like how advances work! Very interesting. 5y
ljuliel Thanks. I just put it in my reminder area. @ValerieAndBooks 5y

Today‘s author spotlight: Franz Kafka! Born in Prague in 1883, he died at 40 in Austria from tuberculosis. His body of work is so influential, that the term “Kafkaesque” has been coined to describe surreal, disorienting complexity. Though engaged several times, he never married. He wrote in his spare time while working in insurance. Much of his work was published posthumously rather than being burned as he wanted. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

wanderinglynn Can you imagine if they had respected his wishes & burned his work? 😱 5y
Lcsmcat Thanks to him, my husband names every cockroach he finds in the garage Gregor. 5y
