That kind, honest Odran Yates, becoming a priest to be good and to do good. Years later his world is shattered by the massive revelations of the abuse of young boys by men serving god and the catholic church. He has to find his way in this new reality and my heart aches for him, his loneliness and his pure heart. John Boyne wrote another masterpiece.

I am reading the tagged one and it is good. I just finished John Marrs‘s debut, a decent thriller. Now I am about to start Orbital, a 💯 #BlameItOnLitsy read!
#authoramonth
Boyne‘s writing is compelling. Although this is a slow moving story, I was never bored with it. I can‘t imagine taking a parent‘s desire for my future as rote, Odran did seem suited to life as a priest. As usual I didn‘t see the twists coming, and the end was a little rough.
Definitely a pick, but Heart‘s Invisible Furies is still my favorite of his.
CWs abound- see spoilers in comments.
This novel follows Odran, an Irishman who joined the priesthood in the 1970s - the height of the seminary boom there. The nonlinear storyline highlights the change in the Catholic Church as Odran‘s treatment goes from revered to reviled by the public. He is illustrative of Boyne‘s incredible ability to both capture history and create morally ambiguous characters.
Thank you for this fantastic gift @BarbaraBB 💜😘

So I‘ll read anything John Boyne writes, obviously. But although I owned this one, I‘m not sure when I would have gotten to it. Reading about a catholic priest isn‘t at the top of my list. @emilyhaldi listed it on her #newyearwhodis list though, so I but the bullet.
Wow. Stunning. Boyne is truly one of the best authors of this generation. The way he writes about the struggles of a priest and makes it relatable is a true gift. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The horrors wrought by the Catholic church on vulnerable children are still being dragged into the daylight. The subtlety and balance Boyne brings to bear on this enduring issue makes this book all the more powerful. Sympathy - in its true sense - for the pressures, social norms and conventions which allowed abuse to continue makes the narrative compelling. A tragedy leading to a lifetime in the priesthood and ultimately to understanding. Superb.
Sometimes picking a new book to read completely paralyzes me 😅 but I figure I can‘t go wrong with Boyne!
Once again, I find myself in this weird ‘between books‘ stage where I start a book, put it down, start another, don‘t feel that either, BUT one thing I‘m sure of is that John Boyne can fix it 💪
The things Boyne does to my heart with his writing shouldn‘t be allowed 💔
This is one of the most perfectly named books, because it is full of loneliness. Odran Yates creates a world of loneliness for himself by not confronting his memories, his relations, and his own part in the trauma the Irish Catholic Church put young children through. He longs to belong, but doesn‘t know how to engage with the world in a meaningful way, so keeps himself 👇
I started this today, and I can already feel John Boyne pulling at my heartstrings 💔

Love ❤️ my new bookends 🥰📚🥳🥰
This story is about the sexual abuse of children by the Catholic Church in Ireland so, for that reason, it will not be a book for everyone. However, I thought Boyne handled the subject with sensitivity and courage. He writes so beautifully💔
Plans for the #weeklyforecast ☝️
I‘ve been saying I‘ll read Loving Frank since January, but this week I WILL read it!
Have a good week everyone 📚
This book is all about the priesthood, specifically child abuse in the Catholic Church.

Not much reading has been done....
A History of Loneliness is a fiction book that follows the main character through his journey from childhood into priesthood. Whether he is naive or chooses to ignore the happenings within the Catholic Church is for the reader to decide. This is a wonderful story about an Irish man and his experience with the Catholic Church that is an important read for all.

John Boyne has easily become one of my favorite authors. While I didn‘t love this novel as much as the previous two I‘ve read, I still found this book brave, compelling and thought provoking. I‘m sure many were uncomfortable and not pleased with his take on the Irish Catholic Church but i felt he painted an honest portrait of the life and struggles one experiences when he enters the priesthood.

What more can I say?! Thanks Trish for everything - I love it all & can't wait to dig into the books and chocolate!
Fun facts: the 'You are my sunshine' song is the one I associate most with my parents, so I'm probably going to be singing whilst reading 'My sunshine away'!
As soon as I saw the title of 'The Reckoning' I guessed Jane Casey (I hadn't even looked at the next book in the series!)

OMG! Thank you so much Trish for all the Governess/Chase extras - there's a very HYPER Jenny in Broadstone right now! 🤣 I'm currently having Chase withdrawal symptoms because of the racing so these have cheered me right up!
As a family we do a lot of charity quizzes, so the notebook is going to be used for that as it's rather appropriate!
Part 2 coming shortly! Sending lots of virtual hugs!
Is John Boyne even capable of writing a bad book? This is the 7th by him that I‘ve read, and each one has been marvelous. This one tackles the very difficult topic of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church through the eyes of Odran, a priest from Dublin. Highly recommend.
1. I‘m a sucker for a light beach read. It‘s my popcorn! 2. We are taking the RV into the Everglades 🐊🐊🐊3. I loved the tagged book. Its about the Catholic Church crisis in Ireland. 4. I do a lot of animal impressions. 🐎🐑🐈🐂. Well. Came in handy working with 2-4 yr olds. 😂 5. 🙋🏻♀️ #friyayintro
Wow, thank you @jenniferw88 what a lovely thing to come home to along with the next #whodunituk book! I‘m so happy with the book, love that I have some more John Boyne to read! Thank you so much!
Isn‘t Litsy a lovely place?? 🥰
This is a fictionalization of the priest coverup within the Irish Catholic Church. It‘s quite good, almost as good as the others of his I‘ve read. Just a sad topic.
1. Boston still is a favorite. 2. Dublin, but all over Ireland. 3. London. 4. If I had money I‘d be a big city person. 5. Fort Lauderdale Fl USA. #FRIDEAS
Squee! I love a Sunday surprise delivery! It‘s bad though, despite my best efforts, this was a purchase. My promise to hubs for this year: no more books. In my defense, it‘s John Boyne. When I opened it up, he said “is that a book you won?” I think he might be on to me.
#alittlepriest #musicalnewyear
Boyne takes on sexual abuse within the church in this novel that follows Ordan Yates, a young Irish boy, from a tragedy in childhood through his life as a priest. As an old man, he reflects on his life and what he could have done, or should have known, as the church grapples with sexual assault. Though he is not an abuser, he must face what others are doing. The audio has a killer Irish accent in narration, too!
The title of this book screams #misery to me, although I haven‘t actually read this so I can‘t say for sure.
The narrator finds his calling as a priest, but 40 years later the catholic priest sex scandal rocks the world and suddenly his position is not respected and revered in the way it once was. He finds the life he has always known crashing down around him. And also, the author is John Boyne. Need I say more?

The History of Loneliness by John Boyne was an interesting book to be reading right now because of the Pennsylvania grand jury report. Boyne is best known for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and like that novel, it is told from the point of view of an “innocent” on the side of the guilty - in this one an Irish Catholic priest. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just can‘t get enough of John Boyne. This novel is about the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. As with all his books, he presents a difficult subject and tackles it frankness and fairness.
I‘m on a mission to read John Boyne‘s entire catalog.
1. The Girl on the Train 2. The Underground Railroad 3. The tagged one - John Boyne. 4. The Edible Woman - Atwood What about you? Let me know! @Tove_Reads
Wow. This book has rendered me speechless, I don't even know what to say but wow. John Boyne has truly mastered his craft - this book is painful, and oh so powerful. It's outstanding!

YOU GUYS!!! I bought this at @strandbookstore ages ago, and I'm just now discovering that it's been signed by John Boyne! I had a bit of a fangirl moment and now I'm even more settled on this as my first physical book for #24in48 🙌🏽
I'm still not sure where exactly I want to start, and this stack is completely subject to change, but I think I'm getting warmer! #24in48 📚
Okay maybe I overdid it a bit this time, but I am so happy! 😍💕 Some for the #ToB and some just because you told me so! #bookhaul
I‘m going to do a little #audiobaking while the object of my #desire is at drill today. We are going to have “better than sex cake” with some lasagna and garlic bread tonight for supper while we watch the KU v TCU game. 🥃🏀. I just downloaded this Boyne novel and I‘m super pumped because the narrator has an Irish accent. I‘m a sucker for a good accent. #nuyear
What did I think of the book? Do I like John Boyne? Find out: https://theworldisourstoread.wordpress.com/2017/12/24/ireland-the-holy-grail-of-...
15 books in September. 11 fiction, 4 nonfiction. Authors from 7 countries. 4419 pages. This was my favourite!
I'm fifth in line at the library for our Heart's Invisible Furies, so in the meantime........also this hardcover was three bucks 😮😮😮😮 I like leaving the price tag on to remind me that I made a good decision
#LibraryHaul I finished Heart's Invisible Furies last night and loved it so much, had to pick up another Boyne. Only one today, but I put holds on the others!
