Discoveries like this are why I love #AuldLangSpine

I really wasn't sure about this one going into it. I was forced to read Heart of Darkness in high school, and have been put off by Conrad ever since. So a book about a PhD student studying Conrad, with scenes from his life, did not seem like the book for me. But of all the #OzFiction on @CarolynM 's list, this was the easiest to get my hands on, so I tried it. And I freakin' LOVED it.

Cont'd 👇

TheKidUpstairs Jones' writing is phenomenal, I can't wait to dive into her other works. This is a story of outsiders drifting through the world without finding belonging, a story of loss and grief. It is melancholy, but with enough glimpses of beauty to keep it from getting bogged down. Thank you Carolyn for this selection, and thank you @monalyisha for your unparalleled matchmaking prowess 💕 6d
monalyisha I‘ll have to look at the summaries of some of her other books and see if they appeal! 6d

CarolynM Glad you enjoyed. I‘ve not read any of her others. I tried to read Five Bells once but didn‘t get very far. I‘ve got a copy of The Death of Noah Glass and I want to try that soon. @MrsMalaprop is a fan, she might have a suggestion of which one to try next 🙂 6d
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM @monalyisha @squirrelbrain I am a big fan of Gail Jones. She is underrated IMO. I haven‘t actually read this one. Sixty Lights was the first one I read years ago 👍. Can also recommend Death of Noah Glass. Last year I read and enjoyed (edited) 5d
TheKidUpstairs @MrsMalaprop thanks for the recommendations! I noticed she's got one coming out this year that sounds really good, too 5d

#12BooksOf2024 December

I was surprised by how much I liked this #ozfiction about a C9th girl whose thirst for knowledge led her into a life of deception in the church. It‘s my pick for December, although my new favourite Georgette Heyer, The Grand Sophy, is a very close second.

Thanks @Andrew65 for making this an annual tradition. And thanks to everyone who‘s participated, I‘ve enjoyed seeing all your choices.

Andrew65 Love Georgette Heyer books,

Thanks for playing along, it‘s been great seeing everyone‘s books. Hope to see you on the First day of Christmas later this year for #12Booksof2025. 👏👏👏😊🎉🥳

I‘ve held off creating my best of 2024 list because I had a feeling this book might on it & I was right. It is a story about the aftermath of a great artist who was a far from great husband & father. The widow & 2 sons are all reeling in their own ways from the emotional scars of the family dynamic. It‘s quite fascinating, but it leaves a lot unexplored & a lot more questions than answers. I‘ll be thinking about it for a while. #ozfiction

Holy 💩⚽️⚽️! Climate dystopian #ozfiction, written by a local #mustread author. Finished reading it today, a day that reached 43C 🔥, whilst hibernating in air con. Absolutely terrifying and affecting. This is Winton desperately trying to WAKE US UP. Read it… if you dare. #chunkster

LeeRHarry We will be reading it for my bookgroup next year. I think you must be sending your hot weather our way for Boxing Day! 🥵 1mo

squirrelbrain Great review! I bought this when it came out over here (October) but the chunksterishness was putting me off - sounds like I need to bite the bullet and dive in. 1mo
Jeg I‘m not a big fan of his , my favourite being The Riders. I‘ve got my name on the list at the library to borrow. Though maybe I‘ll get it for Xmas. I‘m definitely going to read it sometime. Maybe it will go on my shelf next to The Riders. 1mo

Historical fiction is not really my thing & I come from long lines of religious non conformists with no sympathy for the Catholic Church, but I was fascinated by this story of a C9th girl who disguises herself as a Benedictine monk in order to feed her voracious intelligence & desire to learn. The place & condition of women in at that time is a major theme, as is corruption within the church. Captivating stuff! #ozfiction

CarolynM @TheKidUpstairs @monalyisha FYI I would have put this on my #AuldLangSpine list if I‘d read it in time. 1mo
LeahBergen Ooo, I‘ve been wanting to read this! Great review. 😘 1mo

AmyG The cover! Stacked! 1mo
TheKidUpstairs Ooh, I already had this stacked, so I'll bump it up the TBR! 1mo
CarolynM @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I think it‘s the kind of book both of you would like🙂 1mo
CarolynM @Amiable She says in an afterword that the story “draws on myths, legends, gossip and conjecture” so I think we can assume the Pope Joan story was an influence here. 1mo
CarolynM @TrishB @AmyG @TheKidUpstairs I think you would all like it too🙂 1mo
Cathythoughts I just ordered it 😁 only it‘s a pre-order here , won‘t be out till late March. Looking forward to it. 1mo

Ugh! Drivel!

I admit that this is not my thing, but I don‘t think it‘s just a matter of personal taste. I found almost everything about it entirely unconvincing, cliched & predictable. And it was written with such seriousness, not a scrap of wit, while the characters did the stupid stuff that happens in horror movies or survived beatings like the heros of action movies. I would have bailed if I hadn‘t been reading it for book group. #ozfiction

Hooked_on_books Well that‘s a bummer. Gorgeous cover, though. 1mo
Suet624 Love the pissed off nature of this review. 😂 1mo

CarolynM @LeahBergen @ChaoticMissAdventures Always a lively discussion when there are strong views one way or the other😆 I‘m actually really curious about how the others will respond to this one. 1mo
CarolynM @squirrelbrain A very talented young friend drew the picture & printed the cards for me. Glad you like it😘 1mo
CarolynM @Suet624 Thank you, I think😆 1mo
CarolynM @Hooked_on_books It is, isn‘t it. There‘s some decent nature writing in it too. I think Arnott can write, but based on this and the other one of his I‘ve read, I don‘t think he‘s very good at people 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I just saw my favorite booktuber talking about special ordering this and how he keeps meaning to get to it and now I am so curious 🤨 1mo
Centique Ha 😂 Great review! I havent read Arnott yet but i wont try this one anyway. 1mo
Centique Just got something in the post from Reggie so he must be ok but havent had a reply to my email. I hope he got the parcel i sent him anyway 🤞🤞 1mo

The love lives of a pair of sisters put their sibling relationship to the test over the course of a steamy Sydney summer. Although there is plenty of 20 something angst, it‘s intelligently rendered & there are some interesting takes on self awareness & social/romantic manipulation. #ozfiction

Winton is a must read author for me and I devoured this. The dystopian landscape is set in Western Australia around the location of Exmouth, where my parents lived for 29 yrs. What is particularly confronting and frightening is that it stated in a review that everything he writes about is a likely climate science scenario. It‘s based on scientifically accepted and understood evidence and models. A Sobering and chilling thought. 4.5⭐️ #Ozfiction

MrsMalaprop I‘ve gotta get on it! But I have to read Garner‘s latest first. 2mo
Rissreadswithcats @MrsMalaprop Whet! Garner has a new book?!?!?!? How do I not know this? 🤦🏼‍♀️ Googling now! 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
This book was the opposite of Betty and I am grateful for that. I needed to quiet my brain. I loved all the small stories of the narrators life. All those thoughts you have that you file away, that then pop up later. Some are profound, enlightening and instrumental to your past, while others are just bits of fluff, insignificant observations. #Ozfiction
