What's your favorite mountain-y adventure book? As much as the narrator of Wild annoyed me with her unpreparedness, I keep coming back to it when I feel nature calling.

I love the soul searching in this book, something that travel and adventure often have you reflecting on. I'd love more recommendations like this, but maybe fiction?

Kitty_Rochsmith Have you read Eternal on the Water by Joseph Monninger? Or his book The World as We Know it. Both Fiction related to outdoors but also a character story to it not just the outdoors playing a role. I do love his work. 9y

Gonerogue I fell in love with nature coming of age stories as a preteen, so my mind always jumps to jean craighead george (Any and all) and gary paulsen ☺️☺️☺️ as for adult fic.... Let me get back to you on that (apparently not as memorable, whoops) 9y

Little_Reader How about Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer? The book was way more interesting than the movie. It's non-fiction but I still keep thinking about it. 9y

UnabridgedTomes John Muir's writings about being in the mountains is transcendent with his joy. Edward Abbey and Wendell Berry's back catalogs are also good places to go. 9y

hike.read.repeat There are a bunch of thru hiking journals/memoirs. Mostly self published or by indie publishers. Married to the Trail is on my tbr. Also, Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart is a more well known one that I've heard of.

Procrastireader Ugh--cannot get past her idiocy. People have died being that kind of arrogantly stupid. At the (ahem) polar opposite on the preparedness scale, South by Shackleton and The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard. Kon-Tiki, The Call of the Wild, Never Cry Wolf (superb movie, too!), Born Free--and YES to John Muir & Bill Bryson--An Unexpected Light by Jason Elliot, Wild Thoughts For Wild Places by Quammen...and so on😜 9y

AmyAgentBor AWOL on the Appalachian trail. He's much more prepared than Strayed with less baggage. Also Bear in the Backseat is a fun book about encountering animals in the wild. 9y

Baelwolf Krakauer's "Into thin air" and "Into the wild" are both excellent. "Undaunted Courage" is another one of Lewis and Clarke. 9y

JohnG Sorry to disagree but I did t enjoy this book. Her level of naïveté or unpreparedness irked me no end. Much preferred Into Thin Air by Krakauer. 9y

Annecw The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd. Thoughtful, lyrical, intelligent, with an extraordinary awareness of her surroundings - although she maintains 'the mind cannot carry away all that it [the mountains] has to give, nor does it always believe possible what it has carried away' 9y
