You Belong Here
You Belong Here: A Novel | Laurie Steed
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
You Belong Here follows the Slater family from the years 1972 - 2002, finding faith, faults, and redemption, in a raw, at times heartbreaking, but ultimately hopeful meditation on what it means to be a family in modern Australia. 'An unforgettable exploration of the things that hold families together, and tear them apart. It finds the extraordinary in ordinary lives, and brings a tenderness, honesty, and sense of humour that's rarely seen in Australian fiction. It's beautifully written and stays with you long after it ends.' - Ryan O'Neill, 2017 Miles Franklin shortlisted author

Family dysfunction, mental health, and trauma were all explored in this impactful piece of #ozfiction. I felt the big issues were realistically portrayed and I liked the hint of humour in how it was done. Having said that, however, I‘m still sort of left with a feeling of wanting more. The book was quite short, and maybe that‘s why, but I just didn‘t seem to connect to the characters as deeply as I wanted to.

JennyM @CarolynM I think we have the same take on it. @Rissreads @MrsMalaprop have either of you read this? It‘s set in Perth. 5y
CarolynM Yes, I liked it, but I never felt fully engaged with the characters. It was good, but it could have been better. 5y
JennyM @CarolynM completely agree. It could have gone much deeper - I wanted to know more about each of them. Thanks for the recommendation. I‘ll keep an eye out for any more by the author. 5y
Rissreads No I have not read this but it's on my tbr list. I think I may have added it from when @CarolynM reviewed it. 5y
MrsMalaprop No, I‘m not familiar with this one. 5y

The story of a dysfunctional family, from the first meeting of the parents in 1972 through episodes over 40 years of happiness, tragedies, conflicts, estrangements and reunions as their children grow and mature until the present. It touched on some dark subjects and felt truthful in its depiction of the family's difficulties, but there was a strange coolness about it that kept me from really feeling for the characters. A qualified pick. #ozfiction

CarolynM It's set in Perth. May be of interest to you @MrsMalaprop @Jeg @Rissreads 5y

The soup is parsnip and apple, which I made after reading about the characters eating it in Louise Penny's The Nature of the Beast.

robinb Yummm! I love reading what my characters are dining on! 😊👍🤣 5y
