Crimson Petal and the White
Crimson Petal and the White | Michel Faber
At the heart of this panoramic, multidimensional narrative is the compelling struggle of a young woman to lift her body and soul out of the gutter. Faber leads us back to 1870s London, where Sugar, a nineteen-year-old whore in the brothel of the terrifying Mrs. Castaway, yearns for escape to a better life. Her ascent through the strata of Victorian society offers us intimacy with a host of lovable, maddening, unforgettable characters. They begin with William Rackham, an egotistical perfume magnate whose ambition is fueled by his lust for Sugar, and whose patronage brings her into proximity to his extended family and milieu: his unhinged, childlike wife, Agnes, who manages to overcome her chronic hysteria to make her appearances during the Season; his mysteriously hidden-away daughter, Sophie, left to the care of minions; his pious brother, Henry, foiled in his devotional calling by a persistently less-than-chaste love for the Widow Fox, whose efforts on behalf of The Rescue Society lead Henry into ever-more disturbing confrontations with flesh; all this overseen by assorted preening socialites, drunken journalists, untrustworthy servants, vile guttersnipes, and whores of all stripes and persuasions. Twenty years in its conception, research, and writing, "The Crimson Petal and the White" is teeming with life, rich in texture and incident, with characters breathtakingly real. In a class by itself, it's a big, juicy, must-read of a novel that will delight, enthrall, provoke, and entertain young and old, male and female. "

I‘m just a little over halfway thru this doorstop and I‘ve nearly bailed because it doesn‘t always keep my interest (seems a bit repetitive). Do I hang in there???

xicanti I read it a looooong time ago and have forgotten basically everything except that I found the ending weak. It does that litfic thing where it just STOPS. If you don‘t love it, I figure you‘re good to bail. 5mo
Soubhiville I really liked this book, even the end. It‘s definitely a looooong haul though. 5mo
Ruthiella I didn‘t love this like everyone else did. My sister raved about it and I read her copy. For me it dragged a lot. I much prefer by him the very creepy 5mo

Jess_Read_This Permission to bail, granted! I think there are too many other potential gems waiting for you. No need to force thru this one. 😆 5mo
CarolynM I bailed at the 100 page mark. I just don‘t like that cod Victorian writing style. 5mo
LeahBergen Meh. I‘d bail. I loved it when I read it ages ago but I remember loving it all the way through. It‘s probably just not your jam! 5mo
Hooked_on_books I totally say bail. I think in the end you‘ll be glad you did. 5mo
Cathythoughts I did love it. But , I‘m a great believer in the bail. There are so many books to read. I say bail ! Then onwards and upwards 👍🏻♥️ 5mo

Tagged book my favourite of the year! Although I did read the majority of it in the December I finished it in January.

Lonesome Dove I never expected to love as much as I did. I rated it four stars at the time but looking back on it I‘ve bumped it up to 5 stars.

Anne Tyler was a new author to me and I‘ll definitely read more of her this year. And for some reason I finished nothing in October 🤷‍♀️ #readingbracket2022

Happy New Year 🥂💖

So excited about all these books!

Tagged & Jamaica Inn I've already read, but were both 5 🌟, so looking forward to revisiting them.

The Book Eaters & Mexican Gothic were on my radar for 2023 challenges, so they'll probably be my starting books.

Have tried The Sweetness of Water before, but bailed so will try again.

The Shafak was on my radar, have just bought the Sykes & Gordon ⬇️

jenniferw88 The Song of Achilles I've already read (4 🌟), and have added the Rebanks, Macdonald & Kolbert to my kindle wishlist for deals. ⬇️ 2y
jenniferw88 I can't get hold of the Hughes at the moment, but will keep my eyes open for it. ⬇️ 2y

Pickpick

One of the best books I have ever read. It is a tour de force of both Victorian London and the power play between men and women. The pampered but stifling, suffocating and uneducated conditions women of status are kept in, juxtaposes with the squalor of the slums, abuse, wanton disregard and shame endured by the poorer women.

This is a book about sex, lust and the power men yield over women and the women's submission, consensual or not.

Cont...

AllDebooks Cont...

The characterisations, particularly female are extraordinarily well written and presented. Character flaws of all are laid bare as the story progresses. Faber examines the intimate relationships at the core of all our lives, parent and child, spousal, lovers and friends; detailing the ripple effect each individual relationship has on one's behaviour, decisions and opinions, but also on those around us.

Feminism runs throughout the plot and characters. It's very much an ode to equality and very clearly highlights the hypocrisy and inequality between both the sexes and the classes.

The ending is magnificent, although ambiguous and open to readers interpretation, is altogether stronger for it. The denouement is essentially about taking control for oneself. I won't say more than that as I don't want to spoil it.

This is not a book to let pass you by.

I loved the writing styles, but not the characters except Henry >< That's why it took me so long to read it all, I guess.

JazzFeathers Si potrebbe fare così. Magari qualcuno altro vuole unirsi 😊 che dici? 4y
See All 8 Comments
Fammi sapere 😉 4y

When my ex and I were still dating right after high school, sometimes I'd spend the night on the couch before going to to their camper & it always creeped me out. 😂 4y

I finally picked this up recently after putting aside for two months. (Thanks @Amiable for the constant nudge). What a delicious, enjoyable read it prove to be! Reading this was like watching a movie, the way Faber leads us through Victorian London, from the slums to the elegant parlours. Fantastic depictions of the era with a cast of vivid characters which are not easily forgotten. I was invested in the story and ⬇️

Wow! What a novel! Thanks @Amiable for cheering on #ChunksterChallenge2021. I‘m not sure when I would have pulled this off my shelf otherwise.

I loved this story. It‘s about Sugar, a prostitute in London in the 1870‘s, and her meeting with a man who becomes enraptured with her. Their lives become more and more entangled, and we spend a year seeing both their lives change beyond return.

Who has read this and also others by Faber?

MsMelissa I loved this book, but haven‘t read any of Faber‘s other novels. 4y
Ruthiella I‘ve read this and The Book of Strange New Things and Under the Skin. They are each so very different from the other! But all worth reading IMO. 4y
Cathythoughts I loved this book too .. I often think over what happened.. what a story ! I‘m must try another too @Ruthiella 4y

squirrelbrain Ooh, this is on my TBR shelf and I have it earmarked for the #colorintitle prompt for #booked2021 - really looking forward to it now! 4y
LeahBergen I loved this book, too. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR It's a good one 4y
batsy Yup! I loved this. But I need to read his other books. 4y
Amiable Yay! Feels good to complete a chunkster, doesn‘t it ? The feeling of accomplishment is so much sweeter than finishing a short book! Congrats! 4y
Redwritinghood This is one of my favorites. I haven‘t liked other work by him I‘ve read, though. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm pulling this off my shelf starting in June. It's the longest book on my TBR for #pop21 so I may split it up and read 1/3 each month through the summer. 4y

#WeeklyForecast @Cinfhen

I‘m really hoping I can finish up The Crimson Petal and the White this week. #ChunksterChallenge2021

I‘ve been seeing great reviews for Winter Counts, and I‘ll be reading it for my #SouthDakota book for #readingthestates2021.

Broken Wheel is light but on the sad side, and it‘s my #Iowa book for the states challenge. I‘ll probably finish it today or tomorrow.

Have a great reading week friends!

Soubhiville I‘m starting the morning at 11 hours for #20in4. I hope to make about 15 hours by bedtime 😊. @Andrew65 4y
Addison_Reads I really enjoyed Winter Counts. I'm excited too see what you think. 4y

So, I am a huge #gilmoregirls fan. The other day I was watching an episode, and Emily is reading the tagged book. It‘s one of my favorite scenes in the series. I saw it at a used bookstore yesterday and couldn‘t resist picking it up!

I‘m finishing up my #24in48 with the same book I started in.

I got in my time! I finished 4 books, started 2 more, and read some of this one. Audiobooks got me through dog walks and other things I needed to do around the house. I had fun, and I look forward to the next one, whenever that is!

I finally got underway with my #chunksterchallenge2021 book @Amiable . I‘ve only managed about 30 pages this week, but I think I‘ll get a good bit read this weekend during the #24in48.

This was the highest page count on my TBR shelf at 900 pages. I can tell I‘m going to love it- the writing already has its hooks in me. 😊

That‘s Igor peeking out from behind 🐱.

Kloves2read I read this a while back. It‘s a good read. Can be slow at times, but not at all what I thought it would be. I am glad it wasn‘t at all what the writer describes at the beginning, when he foreshadows his own work. I liked it enough that I remember the story line, despite being that I read it over 10 years ago. 🤣 The movie was decent as well. I personally loved Slammerkin by Emma Donahue. Same premise but more developed protagonist. 4y
Wife I have had this on the shelf for a long time too! 4y
LeahBergen I love this pic of Igor! ❤️ 4y

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m reading this for my chunkster challenge too! 🙌 Not much progress though 4y
Amiable Yay! Picking it up and starting it is always the hardest part. It‘s all good from here! 🙂 4y
julesG I liked this. I bought it after seeing that Gilmore Girls episode where Emily gushes about the book when Lorelay and Rory come over for Friday dinner. 4y
Leftcoastzen 😻so cute! 4y
Erinsuereads I didn't know you had one of those little creatures! Soooooo cute! 4y
Soubhiville @ErinSueMreads two hairless kitties live with me. ❤️ 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was just looking at my TBR list the other night looking up longest book for the #pop21 challenge. Once I remove the anthologies, collections, and books in storage, this is the longest book I have on my physical stack. 4y

Set in Victorian London, this book is like jumping into a time machine.

It's a very long book, it's slow paced but it's beautifully written and I got through it eventually.

I really liked these characters, some of them were likeable and others not so much; they were just written so well.

Same rating as Under the Skin but this is better, great author! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Are you EFFIN kidding me??? It‘s 900 pages!!! #PageCountPhobia #Hyperventilating I just took it off my shelf/ slowly working up the courage to read it 😳

Centique 😂😂😂 I know I know - it nearly broke my wrists! It honestly didn‘t feel that long while I was reading it though. 4y
Cinfhen I literally gasped @Centique !!!! Although I‘m sure it‘s wonderful/ once I get passed the page count 4y
JennyM You made me giggle 😆 I keep hearing how wonderful it is...but that is one big book! 4y

Kalalalatja Well. You could also look at it as being three 300 page books combined into one, if that helps with the #pagecountphobia 😂😂 seriously, it is worth it! 4y
jenniferw88 😂 I loved this one! 4y
Cathythoughts It will fly by .... dying to hear your thoughts after you get stuck in ❤️ 4y

Cathythoughts Oh no !!! It took me a long week to read it .... and that was really good going for me 4y

KarenUK I get your phobia totally! 900 pages would be a big ‘Nope‘ from me! 😂 4y
MallenNC I‘m so hesitant to start really long books. 4y
Reviewsbylola You‘ll fly through it. 4y
JacqMac It‘s big, but it‘s very good. One of those stories that will stay with you for a really long time. Or even forever. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm 😂 That‘s why my copy is still collecting dust on my shelves! I like @Kalalalatja way of thinking..it does sound more doable. 💪 4y
erzascarletbookgasm And Cathy read this in a week..it must be very compelling @Cathythoughts 🙂 You can do it, Cindy! As Cathy said, you‘re a fast reader 👍 4y
JamieArc I agree with @JacqMac I read this over 10 years ago and it has stayed with me. I don‘t remember it being that huge. I rarely reread books, but this is one I would consider. 4y
Cinfhen Wow!!!! More fans for this book... I‘m actually getting excited @JacqMac @JamieArc I‘ll keep you all posted @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts @Reviewsbylola 4y

#BookReport
I started & finished this very long book this week. I loved every page of it , intimately developed characters , complicated & real. The words on the cover describe this one perfectly: “ Unbelievably pleasurable “ ... and so it was ...

Cathythoughts @Reviewsbylola Thanks for your comment... I also see another one on Litsy I might try 4y
Cathythoughts @TheNeverendingTBR Thanks X . I‘m no good for more than one book at a time ... I get stressed thinking about it 🤣 ... still Litsy has changed my reading in many ways , maybe one day I‘ll read a few at a time 🤔 maybe !! I hope you enjoy the rest of Crimson , look forward to your thoughts. I might try Under The Skin 😬 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Cathythoughts Hope you love that one too, it was a Pick for me due to the writing; it was a very disturbing read. I actually prefer the movie adaptation, so you should watch that too - it's more on the surreal side. X 4y
