Well-written, this classic account of an Englishman purchasing a house and renovating it in Provence reads well, and quite fast.
I like his writing style, his humor, but if you are reading it now, it is quite outdated.
Such a feel good story, I felt as though I was right there with the author experience life in Provence in 1987. Beautifully written!
Read this years ago and saw it mentioned in a book group. Fond memories of food and sunshine came back to me
I have a love affair with books written month by month, covering a calendar year. My copy of this is dog-eared and water stained, and has traveled with a dear friend across the Atlantic, back to the south of France and its place of inception. Despite terrible intrinsically racist lines ("sallow gypsy girls... hissing at one another in competition" and "A lanky blue-black Senegalese loped...") that should be expunged, the descriptions of food win.
Ok so it's not actually Provence, it's my kitchen. But like any girl worth her salt, I know how to fake it...

Absolutely loving this read. I find it funny, though, that the writer despises the rain and dreary weather while I find that those are my happiest moments. ❤️
I remember I bought Mayle's series of memoirs even before I had finished the tagged. So I actually have 2 copies of this 😍😍
So clichéd if I may end up visiting France on my first trip to Europe... But Provence is MUST for me -
for the vineyards and pastis, for the weekend market, to view one of the ranges of the Luberon and Mont Sainte-Victoire.
I can't wait to read A Pig in Provence for #ReadYourSign ;D

Great first line of a great book. Easy to find, my husband's reading it now!
This is so much fun!

❤️ It's already been published , Kiley Reid's Such a fun age. Great read. Totally lived up to the hype.
❤️ The tagged book
❤️ Chimamanda Adichie, Peter Mayle ( not anymore, sadly), Kiley Reid, Min Jin Lee.
@mabell thanks so much for all of this! I'll drink the tea & eat some chocolate whilst listening to an audiobook & bullet-journalling, and I'll definitely be using 2 (or possibly 3) of the books for challenges this year! I seriously love everything but can't wait to dive into the books!

Just picked up a copy of this for $1 at a used bookstore in NYC after reading Mayle‘s final book 25 Years in Provence.
After leaving Avignon, I couldn't pass up an invitation from Peter Mayle to stop by his house in Ménerbes.
In preparation for a picnic near their vineyard (shown in the distance), we made a trip to the market. Fresh vegetables, bread, cheese, and of course rosé, filled our baskets. We're ready for an alfresco feast!
Following Provence, I head to Mont St. Michel to help Dr. Gideon Oliver with his investigation!

As a new follower, congratulations on your milestone and thanks for the fun #LilnugGiveaway @monalyisha !
My little book nugget is A Year In Provence. It‘s a palate cleanser and it‘s a vacation to a French village. Peter journals his humorous encounters with his neighbors, tradesmen, and visitors.
I felt like I spent a year in France one weekend.
A short account of the charm and peculiarities the British author and his wife encountered during their first year living in Provence. Some humorous anecdotes are told in a conversational style that allows the reader to remotely experience a vacation in the region. Narrated by the author, the audio book was a delightful way to spend 3 hours, but this is not very memorable.
4.5/5⭐️
Wonderful writing, quirky characters, and...Provence. What more would you want?
1. A Year in Provence 2. Pizza cuz u can do ANYTHING to it! 3. Fatty, blubbery, globbilly meat 4. Thanksgiving! 5. Local restaurants that use fresh ingredients: Annie Gunn‘s, Katie‘s Pizza & Pasta, so many others
1. A Year in Provence is a delicious book. Full of French living and food 😛

Thanks for the tag and #tuesdaytidbits @JenlovesJT47 !
1. Peter Mayle - I would love to take up residence in his Provence home
2. Uncle Buck or French Kiss ... Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day
3. The idea of moving to Maine or dreaming of taking a Cunard cruise
4. Would you like to take a stab at it @wanderinglynn @sammisho @erzascarletbookgasm ?
"The first true intimations of spring came not from early blossom or the skittish behavior of the rats in Massot's roof, but from England. With ths gloom of January behind them, people in London were making holiday plans, and it was astonishing how many of those plans included Provence." #provence #france
This is my favorite of all of his books! #takemebacktoArles 😊📚📖❤️
Thanks for the tag @Jess7 😀 Here are my go-to #comfortreads.
1) A Confederacy Of Dunces (Always makes me laugh)
2) A Year In Provence (Read only with wine)
3) A Moveable Feast (Paris in the 1920s - always a good idea)
4) Love In The Time Of Cholera (Best ever portrait of marriage and secrets)
5) The Cat Who Came For Christmas (It‘s Ove in NYC with a lovable cat)
6) All Over But The Shoutin‘ (I‘ve read this book so many times that it‘s damaged)
One of the reasons I love this book is due to Mayle's interactions with his #neighbors. (Particularly Massot, the "eccentric" one)

Congrats, Rachel, on reaching that HUGE milestone! 🎉
I've given a lot of thought to a recommendation, and one book I love so much it just makes me happy to read it is A Year in Provence. ❤️ I love the setting, humor, and hijinks. It so perfectly describes situation and place, I am transported. (And in this flight of fancy, I am able to speak flawless French)

My dad sent me the photo he took just now of his #PeterMayle collection, all lovingly wrapped to preserve the covers. Peter Mayle's his favourite author and he's so cut up about his death! Mayle brought happiness to so many people , it feels like losing a friend!
these are some of my well-worn books.i devoured these when it seemed that traveling to far-off places was a very remote possibility for me.though i might not have made a life for myself in France like him,i go back to his words every once in a while to feel that sense of purpose & possibility whenever i feel unanchored. RIP, mr. mayle. TY for showing me that a life lived simply and happily can be a life well lived.
Today's book and DVD haul from the Salvo's in Wickham! A few classics for the kids. Thought I'd give Liane's sister Jaclyn a try. Added to my collection of Georgia Blain and Jodie Picoult too.
A few of the #marvelousmemoirs I've read recently, some more marvelous than others. 😉 #awesomeautumnbooks @Jess7
If only books can teleport us to the paradise being read of... Lubéron Mountains sound INCREDIBLE
Today France chose liberty and equality over discrimination and bigotry. Congratulations on not letting hate win. I only wish America had done the same. Half French and proud of it 😀
Here are 2 books that start with A and they celebrate my love for reading about France! #alexgiveaway
This was a lovely book. 4 solid stars. A Britt I should couple move to Provence and this is the breakdown of their first year, complete with house rehab stories and kooky characters. A quick engrossing read!
I whipped through this memoir of moving to Provence. Not really a travel memoir, it's more about the small village Peter and his wife move to, their home renovations, and food, naturally. Endearing, funny and hunger inducing. Of his other books, I have only read the Diamond Caper-has anyone read others by Mayle? 5⭐️

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Kwanza and... Boxing Day? Do people say happy Boxing Day? This is a book in Cyprus so I think it's in Greek, but not sure. Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.
Another "To Read" book ? #TitlesStartingwithXYZ #SeasonsReadings2016
Ahhhhh what a lovely lovely book. Now I MUST go to Provence one day 😊 The stories are calm and delightful but never dull. Now I look forward to reading more by Peter Mayle.
#seasonsreadings2016 #Decemberreads this pile is very ambitious for me but I'm going to give it a solid try and get through as many as possible in December🎄
So I just thought i'd share a funny #booknerd #readerproblems kinda story. I was in my reading chair the other day reading when I realized I had shifted position so many times that I was actually upside down. The funny part was I tried to get up and realized I am part turtle 🐢..lol it took some patience and maneuvering to get right side up again😂 anyone else end up in slightly odd positions?
A pleasant little palate cleanser that was just as expected. Month by month humorous tales of an English couple who purchase an old house in Provence. There were several French phrases so I referred to Google French translation. I will definitely read more of Mayle's books.
