The Boneless Mercies
The Boneless Mercies | April Tucholke
They called us the Mercies, or sometimes the Boneless Mercies. They said we were shadows, ghosts, and if you touched our skin we dissolved into smoke ... Frey, Ovie, Juniper, and Runa are Boneless Mercies death-traders, hired to kill quickly, quietly and mercifully. It is a job for women, and women only. Men will not do this sad, dark work. Frey has no family, no home, no fortune, and yet her blood sings a song of glory. So when she hears of a monster slaughtering men, women, and children in a northern jarldom, she decides this the Mercies one chance to change their fate. But glory comes at a price An epic YA fantasy set in a breathtaking new world, this is perfect for fans of V.E.Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, Laini Taylor and Melinda Salisbury "Fierce and glorious, this story of outcast girls defying fate utterly bewitched me. Tucholke is a gorgeous writer." -- LAINI TAYLOR, New York Times-bestselling author of Strange the Dreamer "??Its every page hints at a deeper magic at work; it contains a whole world and all its myths and histories within its skin." -- MELISSA ALBERT, New York Times-bestselling author of The Hazel Wood "Ruthless and lyrical, heart-warming and blood-chilling, and beautifully redolent of ancient tales and history. It will sing to a new generation of heroes."-- SAMANTHA SHANNON, New York Times-bestselling author of The Bone Season "I fell in love with this stunning novel from the very first page. Fierce and unforgettable, with gorgeous prose and a fantastic premise that more than delivers. Easily one of my favorite YA novels of 2018." -- KATHERINE WEBBER, author of Wing Jones and Only Love Can Break Your Heart

What a disappointment. I had been looking forward to this book. I even bought it new, because the concept is great. A bunch of young women done with the death trade decide to quest for more in their lives. The downside? More talking about action than action. The MC only wants glory and fame (makes her unlikeable) and only has heartfelt convos with people she‘s about to kill. Huge bummer. #bookspinbingo #20in4 15 hrs @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65

This is a 4.5 stars for me. It‘s an interesting journey the Mercies take to claim their fame by hunting the Blue Vee Beast, but I wish the story got to Blue Vee quicker. The characters are great, and Tucholke had me cheering for the Mercies to succeed. The world-building is excellent. A friend recommended this book to me as a gender-bent “13th Warrior,” and that‘s accurate. I love that film, so this book was enjoyable for me.

About halfway through The Boneless Mercies. This was recommended by a friend of mine whose delivered on his previous recommendations. I‘ll confess that I‘m tepid on some of the book, so far, but there are aspects of it I‘m enjoying. That I‘m going back and forth from a hardback and an audiobook copy is helping me keep going.

After 22 days, I‘m finally feeling like I have free time, and starting to work my way through the large number of ARCs in my TBR stacks. Tonight was definitely well spent on The Boneless Mercies.
A beautiful twist on Beowulf, we see Frey and her companions redefine themselves through trials, tribulations, and loss. The concept of two sides to every story features prominently, which leaves so many different directions for the next book to go in.

I stopped reading this book at less than halfway. I really wanted to like it (really really badly!) but I found it slow and boring.

I just didnt feel for the characters yet and I didn't know enough about their quest. It's a shame, because I love Viking YA and I loved Sky in the Deep.

4 1/2 stars, I think. I really enjoyed this. Loved the flow, the story, the characters. I just felt like the things that were changed to make it "original" weren't changed enough: Vorse instead of Norse, Obin instead of Odin, Valkree, as a goddess, instead of the Valkyries, Holhalla instead of Valhalla, Hel instead of Hell. Maybe that's just me being too harsh. #yareads

Guys, I really liked this one. It was a combo Iliad, Odyssey, Beowulf...but with some badass females. Despite being a modern epic tale, the writing was rather simple. I think for this reason, it wasn‘t as emotional as it could‘ve been. However, that sort of fit the story and the way of its characters. Many open ends of storylines lends itself to sequels. (I tried very hard to capture the beautiful foiling on the cover.)

Tucholke is a stronger and stronger writer with every book she writes. I loved her writing style and ability to capture the /feeling/ of centuries old fairytales in her last book. Here she does the same but with a Norse-inspired standalone YA fantasy. This book and its characters are full of grit, blood, and fiercely wild magic. The writing is epic and lyrical just like Beowulf, the story which it retells from a fresh feminist perspective.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a lush novel filled with legend, adventure, monsters, death, glory, and loss in which it gives us a badass female retelling of “Beowulf”. It easily sets up for a sequel due to events being foreshadowed at the end, and I‘m intrigued to see how the characters‘ futures pan out. Despite this novel having a GORGEOUS cover, I would have loved to have a book map since the author goes into great detail about the world‘s geography.

First book of 2019 finished and I loved it from start to end. The Boneless Mercies isn‘t your normal mercenary story. They are a band of women who deal with mercy deaths, men won‘t do them so women pick it up. Stories are never written about them and the death they bring, but one day a group of 4 decide to leave it behind and change this. Death follows those who bring it, no matter how far they try to escape it. An easy yet captivating read.

My last book of 2018! I literally finished this at 11:57 PM. 😬 Anyway, my rating is 3/5 stars. I loved how this was a female retelling of Beowulf. However, I felt like the characters were not developed and the pacing in some areas were slow. Also, the action scene in the end fell flat for me. There were redeeming scenes, but I think this book is so-so.

April Genevieve Tucholke has written an enthralling and enchanting tale of the relationship between Mercies, all young strong women in a harsh, difficult and poor world. While this is a Young Adult novel it is in no way childish and the Mercies may be young the story‘s in depth and is really about hope and love and companionship. The world created is very atmospheric and detailed and you could easily get lost here. I loved this. #netgalley

“I am Frey... I am woman, wanderer, warrior.”

An amazing retelling of Beowulf where a band of 4 women decide to leave the path as Boneless Mercies, weary of the death trade, and hunt a great beast.

I usually soar through books but found myself slowly savoring this one. I really enjoyed this magical story of strong women and will probably reread it many time.

Here‘s my beautiful UK edition... in my swap basket.
I‘m kind of sad that I didn‘t love this. It features strong, independent young women who are also decent people, and we need more of that. But they cannot carry the entire plot.
The pacing is off, with events just flowing undistinctly into one another, till there is no timeline at all.
Lots of telling and too little showing, which waters down the plot and weakens the world building.
Pity.

So👋 I‘m back! I‘ve been so sick, I couldn‘t even read so I‘ve been laying in bed binging Netflix(has anyone else become obsessed with The Haunting Of Hill House series??) Some #BookMail came over the last few days which cheered me up a bit. First up is The Boneless Mercies, which I believe is a feminist retelling of Beowulf. An ancient female sect of assassins bring merciful death to the old & sick until they hear of a killer beast in the north.
