This Monstrous Thing
This Monstrous Thing | Mackenzi Lee
A wildly creative Gothic fantasy retelling of Frankenstein, This Monstrous Thing is a wholly new reimagining of the classic novel by Mary Shelley and is perfect for fans of retellings such as Cinder by Marissa Meyer, fantasy by Libba Bray and Cassandra Clare, and alternative history by Scott Westerfeld. In an alternative fantasy world where some men are made from clockwork parts and carriages are steam powered, Alasdair Finch, a young mechanic, does the unthinkable after his brother dies: he uses clockwork pieces to bring Oliver back from the dead. But the resurrection does not go as planned, and Oliver returns more monster than man. Even worse, the novel Frankenstein is published and the townsfolk are determined to find the real-life doctor and his monster. With few places to turn for help, the dangers may ultimately bring the brothers togetheror ruin them forever.

Mary‘s house was long out of sight, and through the street around us was full of people, it felt for a moment like there was no one there but the two of us. Just Clémence and me, and without saying anything to each other, we started walking again at the exact same moment.
Side by side, and sure as clockwork.

Ya‘ll…this book is fantastic. I went into it thinking it was a retelling of Frankenstein itself, and while it is a retelling, it‘s more of a steampunk retelling of how Mary Shelley came up with the idea for the original story. If life wouldn‘t have gotten in the way, I would‘ve finished this way sooner. It was a struggle to put it down. If you have a love of Frankenstein or steampunk, I recommend giving this a chance. #thismonstrousthing

sprainedbrain Can‘t wait to hear what you think… I love her Montague siblings books and have wondered about this one! 3y
SpookyDonut @sprainedbrain I inhaled the Montague siblings books, except the 3rd one. I haven‘t gotten my hands on that one yet. I‘m extremely picky about Frankenstein retellings because of how much love I have for the original. If you haven‘t read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White, I highly highly recommend! 3y
sprainedbrain I have read that, and I freaking loved it. So I‘m going to trust your assessment of this one. 😉 3y

Sorry it wasn't my book. I don't like #steampunk so much perhaps thats the reason. But the beginning is also very slow.

Now the book goes to the next reader of the #12Littens12books tour.

Kaye We have lots of those grey days here during winter also. One of the reasons winter bothers me. The cold is fine , but it makes it look like we live in BLACK AND WHITE WORLD. No color, no blue skies, green grass, leaves. The world is grey. 6y

Finished my first book from the #HocusPocusSwap and loved it!! Thanks so much @inthegreensandblues !!

Everything I disliked about Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein, Mackenzi Lee does absolutely right. She turns a story about a spoiled, arrogant boy, into one of love between brothers, of doubting oneself yet still knowing to do the right thing.
And I didn‘t mind the steampunk additions one bit😁

I participated in the YA buddy read for A Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue awhile back and thought it was a really fun book. I wanted to try something else by that author, and I found out she wrote this book about a guy bringing his brother back from the dead around the same time Frankenstein is published, which makes things hard for the brothers.
