The Tuesday Night Club: A Miss Marple Short Story | Agatha Christie
59 posts | 66 read | 21 to read
Miss Marple: The Complete Story Collection gathers together in one magnificent volume all of Agatha Christies short stories featuring her beloved intrepid investigator, Miss Marple. Its an unparalleled compendium of murder, mayhem, mystery, and detection that represents some of the finest short form fiction in the crime fiction field, and is an essential omnibus for Christie fans. Described by her friend Dolly Bantry as the typical old maid of fiction, Miss Marple has lived almost her entire life in the sleepy hamlet of St. Mary Mead. Yet, by observing village life she has gained an unparalleled insight into human natureand used it to devastating effect. As her friend Sir Henry Clithering, the ex-Commissioner of Scotland Yard, has been heard to say: Shes just the finest detective God ever madeand many Agatha Christie fans would agree.

I‘ve never read Miss Marple, so I thought I‘d take advantage of this Nebraska Blizzard season and get a start. I love these little mysteries and Miss Marple reminded me of Father Brown. I genuinely love trying to solve the puzzle and being outwitted by Dame Agatha every time. Even if I figure out part of the mystery, I never unravel every bit.

LittlePixels My daughter is working her way through Agatha Christie right now, and she loves Hercule Poirot so much that she‘s loathe to even try any of the Miss Marple novels. I think she feels like it‘s a betrayal or something. 🤣 10mo
AshleyHoss820 @LittlePixels I have to be honest, I was doing the same thing! 😂🤣 I love Hercule and his mustaches and little grey cells! But honestly, I think I could dig Miss Marple too! 10mo
LittlePixels @AshleyHoss820 I‘ll have to tell my daughter she isn‘t alone. 😄 And maybe convince her to give Miss Marple a try… 10mo
AshleyHoss820 @littlepixels Definitely! I‘ve only read one Miss Marple, but she‘s a sly lady! 10mo

Ms. Marple and her friends discuss crimes that were considered “unsolvable” to see if anyone can figure them out. Like a sewing circle, but for murder! And of course in all of these small mysteries, Ms. Marple wins. Ms. Marple is always portrayed as a kind elderly woman who can read people and situations so well in order to solve these crimes, and I‘m for it, but I would also LOVE to read a backstory of how she was an absolute badass in her youth

Bk8 of June & #BigJuneReadathon is done! I originally read this as a teenager as The Thirteen Problems, I think the above is the US title. One of the Special Edition hardbacks they‘re bringing out each year, I‘m slowly collecting them all. The 1st Marple outing, it‘s a short story anthology collected as a different problem presented by each person at a dinner party. Of course our fluffy old lady solves every one! #BookspinBingo #CloakDaggerChal

TheAromaofBooks You have me hooked on these special editions - I absolutely love them!! Roger Ackroyd is coming out later this year and I'm so excited. 2y

Lizpixie @TheAromaofBooks oooh is it?!? That‘s one of my favourite Poirot! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I may have preordered it from Book Depository already 😂 It's supposed to be released in November, I think, along with The Mysterious Affair at Styles. I'm excited to see some of the full-length novels in this format, as sometimes the short stories overlap. I've been using this website to keep track of what's coming - they seem to keep it updated! ⬇ 2y

Giving Dame Agatha a reread on this chilly Thursday here in Sydney. I first read this years ago as The Thirteen Problems, the above title was the US version. The 1st outing of Miss Marple, it‘s like a short story collection gathered as a regular club meeting where each member presents a mystery only they have the answer to. Of course the “fluffy old lady” solves it every time! One of my favourite Marples. #BigJuneReadathon

Thanks for the tag @BeeMagical 😀

1. Agatha Christie, the Queen of Crime!

2. I usually finish books even if I'm hating them. There have been a few self-published books that I've bailed on because I couldn't stop internally editing them.. Also, I only managed 4 pages of Twilight (sorry) 😋

3. I'm grateful for Pickles' sweet little face at the end of what was a very difficult day 💕

And for chocolate yule log 😄

BeeMagical LOL I‘ll admit I haven‘t read the Twilight series yet (one day!) but the movies are totally my guilty pleasure😂 and I hope your day turns out better!💗 (edited) 3y

I‘ve spent January working on replacing my morning routine with habits that I enjoy and add value to my day - deleting Twitter and Reddit from my phone during #JoyousJanuary have opened up space in my morning for spending more regular time on Litsy and sometimes even a chapter or two! I‘ve been much less morose these last 9 days and am starting my days in a much happier place. January has turned joyous, indeed.

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories starring Miss Marple. It‘s the 2nd in the series & really establishes her ability to solve any mystery while knitting. It also lets you get to know several characters that show up in other Marple books.

veritysalter I love the way that no matter how glamorous the situation or complicated the crime, Miss Marple always has a village story it can be related to - proving human nature is the same, whatever the social situation. So pleased to find another fan. 5y

I've owned this stained and battered paperback since 1980. Miss Marple is the best antidote whenever I feel anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, or just plain lonely. And these short visits with my favorite cozy detective feel like ... a hug from my grandmother. One thing we always agreed on was our love of Agatha Christie.

Anyone else reread old favorites to find comfort &/or fight the inner demons?

I finished this a few days ago but it's so unmemorable, I forgot. This was October's #agathachristieclub read & it dragged on. It's all short stories; people gather around to tell their mysterious tales & Miss Marple, of course, figures it out while other younger, average minds can't. I, meanwhile, fell asleep in the middle of every one of these tales & can't tell you what it was about. It doesn't get a pan because I can't hate on Miss Marple 👵🏻

saresmoore Haha! I think we‘ve made it to a good place in life when we‘re reading so much, it‘s possible to forget something you just finished. P.S. I do this all the time, even with (what should be) memorable books. 🤦‍♀️ 6y

I found this book to be so-so. Each chapter features a crime told by one member of the group, then the others try to guess the solution, Miss Marple featuring. My issue is that I wanted more to reach story. They were complete, but I just prefer longer and more detail. I like seeing the actions of the character and trying to solve as the story goes along. I didn't have a chance to really do that with this book. #backpackeurope @JenP @BookwormM

mabell I enjoyed this one, but I feel the same way. I prefer Christie's novel format, with more development and background on the characters, and more "detecting." ? 6y
tdrosebud @mabell Exactly! That was literally my only issue and why I rated it as I did. It was a high so-so though, I could see potential for some of the stories to possibly be in the novel format. 6y

#NovemberByTheNumbers #day13 This was the first book that came to mind for today‘s prompt. One of my favourite Miss Marple books, the image of this little old lady sitting in the corner knitting in a room full of people trying to Big note themselves, then quietly shooting down their hypotheses before solving the case completely. As I‘m getting older, I realize more and more how older women are so discounted, which was Miss Marple‘s genius.
