Moving Pictures (Revised)
Moving Pictures (Revised) | Terry Pratchett
The alchemists of the Discworld have discovered the magic of the silver screen. But what is the dark secret of Holy Wood Hill? It's up to Victor Tugelbend ("Can't sing. Can't dance. Can handle a sword a little") and Theda Withel ("I come from a little town you've probably never heard of") to find out.

BookmarkTavern This was such a fun read! I really loved the satire of Hollywood and making movies, how Dibbler kept going grander and grander with his plans. Also, the troll romance was unexpectedly delightful. And I can‘t believe it took me until the last hour or so for the book that I got the uncle Oswald reference was the Oscar statues. 😅😅😅 (edited) 2w
julesG @BookmarkTavern 😁 It took me some time to get the uncle Oswald reference, too. 2w

julesG Did I mention that the new recording of the audiobook is narrated by Jason Isaacs? If not, mea culpa. 2w
BarbaraJean I loved all the little references--especially Blown Away 😂 It was a lot of fun deciphering those references, and I'm sure I missed a lot of them. I also really liked the deeper themes about dreams, and Victor's comments on being the biggest version of yourself. I'd have liked more of that, but felt like it got eclipsed by all the clever references. @BookmarkTavern Yes! The troll romance! I think the trolls were my favorite characters in this one. 1w
willaful @BarbaraJean I also liked the troll romance, which reminded me of my marriage. 🤣 I really had to hit him with a brick!

I enjoyed all the jokes, but also feel the deeper themes weren't explored as much as I would've liked. It's interesting to see the beginnings of the Wizard changeover, and Ponder Stibbons.
5d
julesG @willaful You married a troll? 😜 Reading Unseen Academicals and then jumping right into Moving Pictures I was actually confused for a moment that Ponder was a student. 5d
willaful Well, he is very tall. 😂

Yes, the chronology was a bit confusing. I wonder what Rincewind was up to while all this was happening. Probably running away, somewhere.
5d
julesG @willaful chased by who-knows-what and Luggage 5d
willaful @julesG I'm still unclear about what happened to the Luggage's domestic life... 5d

Discworld discovers the unique magic of the silver screen & moving pictures. It goes about as well as you could expect. & will make you cry.

While this story is humorous, it‘s also an examination of the creation & destruction of dreams, the fine balance of solace/oblivion one can find in media. & how the real heroes are the ones that aren‘t recognized. 1 of the more bittersweet Discworld novels. & goddamn but it made me cry. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Third book read for #HauntedShelf @Catsandbooks #HexesAndCrows

I would rank this in the top 20, maybe top 10, of Pratchett's books. He really hit the nail on the head with this one. Given the state of Hollywood, I think it is even more relevant today than when it was written. Got to say, Pratchett's wit shines in this one.

Maybe I‘m too old to just get into Discworld. All the jokes were flat, and it was nothing but jokes. Sigh. I feel like I wasted a Hoopla checkout.

Ruthiella I‘m ancient and I love the Discworld! But if Pratchett‘s sense of humor isn‘t yours, you aren‘t going to be a fan. I‘m always a little happy to know there are certain books that aren‘t for me, so I can skip them with a free conscience. But, that is a bummer about one less Hoopla borrow! 2y

🎉 Finished my 20th Discworld book! By my count that puts me halfway through the series. For the confused: I've been reading them in whatever order I can get them from the library.
I loved the send ups of classic and popular films. Imaginative and funny as always and all the more heartwarming thanks to Gaspode the Wonderdog and Good boy Laddie! I think if this were published today, the focus would be on the internet as the seductive medium. 🤔

While I missed some of the usual characters from previous books, I greatly appreciated all the giggles in this satire. The featured characters, esp. Victor & the Archchancellor, add just enough reason to make Holy Wood even more ridiculous. Their resistance to the allure also grounded the story in a way, and made it even more fun to root for them against the madness. It weirdly felt like not enough happened, but I still really enjoyed it.

Once again I'm being a downer on the early books. This one does get into the feel of his parody style more. I guess I'm just not real big on movies in general (the book is better after all).

This one took me a long time to get into, I tend to struggle with the outliers in the Discworld series, without the characters I‘ve grown to love. But as the action picked up at the end and the movie references came faster, it definitely got better and picked up for me, loved Gaspode and the last 1/3 of the story flew by for me.

Oh, I liked this one! In my mind I think I had conflated it with Soul Music, so it'll be interesting to revisit that one and see just how similar they are. I feel like the middle sagged some and I wish that Ginger was a more developed character, but the ending sings and the prose is having the best time the whole time. Probably to highest jump in fun between memory and reread.

dariazeoli I‘m about halfway through the book so far, which is ok because the next book isn‘t available on Libby 🙁 This one started off slow for me, but it seems to be rounding a corner. I‘m enjoying the references to movies 6y
See All 15 Comments
TheSpineView Gaspode was my favorite character. Leave it to Pratchett to poke fun at such an institution as Hollywood. I thought Pratchett was very clever in having the statue defeat the creatures from the Dungeon Dimensions. What do you think he was trying to say by doing that? 6y
gossamerchild I'm still working my way through this one, too. I've read it before, but it's been long enough that I don't remember much. Gaspode is the best! I'm also amusing myself by trying to guess the “real life“ references in the Holy Wood (spellcheck wants me to change that to Hollywood) universe. “Blown Away“ about killed me...too funny 😆 6y
TheSpineView @gossamerchild I know I chuckled my way through this one.🤣 6y
Laura317 I finished it awhile back. It wasn‘t my favorite, but I did like the talking dog. 6y
julesG @dariazeoli I haven't finished either. Other books called for my attention. I like it, but I'm definitely looking forward to June and Reaper Man. 😉 6y
Gezemice I have read this a while ago. This one is more fun for its little quotes and digs at Hollywood (frankly, I don‘t give a damn 😂). The story was rather shaky, but I also enjoyed Gaspode. 6y
khooliha @TheSpineView I was thinking about the purpose of the Oscar defeating the Dungeon Dimension beasts as well. It's not as if the Academy Awards reign in excess or the "unreality" (or heightened reality, I guess) of movies. I mean, it's probably just for the image, but I think it's interesting. 6y
khooliha I must have said this 3 or 4 times before, but this feels like the series really finding its groove. The antagonist/threat feels very classic Discworld, and I like using the Dungeon Dimension slightly differently than the past. Speaking of the DD, I feel like Pratchett took some pains early on to differentiate Victor from Rincewind, specifically in never running away because it takes too much energy. 6y
khooliha The wizard portion of the book felt a little weird, cause it never mattered that much that Victor used to be a wizard, but I was happy to see Ridcully and Ponder. Ridcully just needs to chill a bit and Ponder needs to step up his game. 6y
khooliha Also, a silly question: did Gaspode have 4 legs the whole book? Cause my brain squarely has him as a 3 legged dog and now I am not sure why. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Finally finished this one too! I agree, it started off really slow for me, a bit disjointed between the wizards, Victor, the new senior wizard, etc....but as usual it coalesced as it went along and I loved the last 1/3 of the story. Gaspode was my favorite... I was wishing for a fluke that he could keep his speech and we‘d see him in other books, I enjoyed his character and perspectives. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheSpineView I‘m guessing we are all relying on Uncle Oscar to protect us from film demons.🤷‍♀️ 6y

This is an extremely accurate depiction of something that happens in this book, painted by the great Paul Kidby. Don‘t you think you should probably read it?

#DiscRead

Billypar You and @Aimeesue are making a good case for Pratchett. Is there a good one to start with? 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk That is a loaded question! He‘s most famous for his 41 book Discworld series which I‘m tackling in publishing order. A lot of them stand alone though, and to start I‘d highly recommend 6y
Aimeesue @Billypar Defintely go with the DW books first, but I wouldn‘t start at the beginning if I had it to do over. There are several arcs to follow, though. I‘d start off with The Witches arc or the City Watch arc first, so Equal Rites or Guards, Guards! Depends on which you favor, Shakespeare and psychology or police procedurals. Arcs are laid out nicely here: https://io9.gizmodo.com/how-to-read-terry-pratchetts-discworld-series-in-one-h-1... (edited) 6y
See All 10 Comments
Aimeesue Or just throw caution to the wind and go with my favorite, The Wee Free Men, which is a Tiffany Aching book, and technically YA, but the Mac ac Feegles (Scottish “Pictsies”) crack me up. Crivens! 6y
Billypar @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Aimeesue Oh wow- thanks for the reccs! And here I was thinking there'd be 5-7 of these....41?! 😯 I have seen a lot of love for Guards! Guards! though @Aimeesue I'll keep your fav in mind! 6y
Aimeesue @Billypar Oh, Guards, Guards! Is one of his best. My favorite of the City Watch books. Sam Vimes! Nobby! Detritus! Ooh, and Vetinari! Who I always see as being played by David Bowie for some reason. 😋 (edited) 6y
Billypar @Aimeesue Okay: Vetinari = Bowie- got it. I'll file that away for when I pick it up 👩‍🎤 6y
Soubhiville Yes! What a great image! I love the depictions he does. @StephanieGeiser see, you should give Discworld a try! 😏. 6y
Soubhiville @Billypar Wee Free Men and the Tiffany Aching series are actually my favorite too. But of the more adult Discworld series, I love Men at Arms. 6y

In Discworld 10, Lovecraftian horrors seek to break into reality by weakening the walls between real and unreal... and what better way to do that than the Disc‘s burgeoning moving picture industry located at, where else, Holy Wood.

This book is loaded with movie in-jokes and commentary about the madness of fame, while somehow also being a cracking adventure. Also Gaspode the Wonder Dog and a thousand elephants!
