The Observer

Non-fiction: I found this part interesting because it taught me a lot about the russian history, and how people were punished. this part is rather dark but we can't rewrite the past but reading about it and understanding it is rather interesting. From this passage in the book I understood why Ivan the terrible was given that name. I think that this book is a good dive into history, and how people ruled at that time.

Wow, I feel like I deserve a medal after finishing off this bad boy! It‘s huge and heavy going but at times brilliant and intriguing! I loved some of it and other times it was rather dry! A weird and wonderful book! (I finally finished Helen!! 🥳🙌🏻)

Finally finished this chunkster! Difficult to decide on a rating for this one. It was very up and down as to whether it held my interest or was very dry.

I did learn a lot though so for that reason I‘ll give it a (low) pick. It improved with the reign of Nicholas II, @Caroline2 , but be warned the actual execution is rather distressing.

#nfnov #til all about Rasputin. I thought he was around in mediaeval times - no idea he was so ‘recent‘ 😳

jenniferw88 I knew Rasputin was recent, but only because my Dad taught the Russian Revolution! Otherwise I would have been like you 😂😂😂 5y
squirrelbrain The thing is, @jenniferw88, I did a bit of the Russian Revolution in school.... but maybe Rasputin was a bit too naughty to be taught in schools! (edited) 5y
Caroline2 Well done for finishing!!! 🎉🥳👏 you must be celebrating! I‘m still struggling through. 🙄 I‘ve read a lot of books about the Russian revolution so I‘m looking forward to getting to Nicholas II‘s reign. 😉 5y

Hey @squirrelbrain how are you getting on with this? One day I‘m finding its really interesting then other days I‘m finding it a slog. 🤷‍♀️ I feel like I want to be done with it now but I‘m only 37% through!! 🤦‍♀️ #looseygooseybuddyread

DrexEdit I was going to comment that this book looked interesting to me. But, come to find it's already on my #TBR. So stacking! 😊 📚 5y
squirrelbrain Hey, just the same for me! I‘m reading it on the train (or I was - distracted with something else this week!). Some days I enjoy it, other days I couldn‘t tell you what I‘ve read, even though I‘m turning the pages! 😬 I think I‘m enjoying the personal stuff and not the war / political bits. I‘m about 50% in (Napoleon‘s around) and I‘m hoping it will get more and more interesting the closer it gets to present day. 5y
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain Yeah I‘ve just got up to the napoleon bit so it‘s feeling more engaging now. I think the author gets way too distracted giving details on all the Generals and their love lives....I don‘t care!!! Just stick with the royal family, that‘s hard enough to follow as it is!!!! 😆 5y

2 books on the go currently; I‘ll finish In the Wilderness and continue with the tagged book, which is a bit of a chunkster at almost 800 pages.

I‘m getting the Carolina book from the library tomorrow and hope to start the Doig too.

Finished a documentary that looked at Czar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra, through their extremely passionate letters. #TodayILearned so much about the fall of the Romanovs, but also the love the two had for each other - they used code names to represent their desires, and she numbered her letters (there were that many). Arguably, their devotion led to the dynasty‘s fall. Author of tagged book is one of those interviewed in the program. #NFNov

Reading this huge book on Romanovs currently and I have to pause often to deal with the violence and cruelty! People complain about torture shown in Game of Thrones. They should read real history to gain some perspective on the real human condition. I often justify the past cruelty by telling myself that those were diff times. But then I remember Syria of today and it horrifies me.

A great overview of the ruling Romanov dynasty. If you are unfamiliar with the time period, there can be some confusion as the focus tends to stay with the family itself. With a bit of background knowledge, the details of the personal lives of the Romanovs become enthralling.

Part of my fascination with the Romanov family is their undying #devotion to the idea they were ordained by God to rule Russia. Their inability to see the changes around them was tragic. Well, much of Russian history is overwhelmingly tragic.
