Sad Cypress: Hercule Poirot Investigates | Agatha Christie
58 posts | 85 read | 32 to read
Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stood serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows.

An anonymous letter!
Elinor Carlisle stood looking down at it as it lay open in her hand. She‘d never had such a thing before. It gave one an unpleasant sensation. Ill-written, badly spelt, on cheap pink paper.

Hercule Poirot comes to investigate whether Elinor Carlisle murdered young Mary Gerrard. She was posioned and it seems had motive too. They was the first time I read this book, but I had seen the TV adaption. It was as usual a good read.

Yet another Agatha re-read, this time for the Read Christie 2023 Challenge. This year is off to a great start! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another fave Christie book. This one is a departure from the usual formula: there's only one murder 🫨, it focuses on the alleged killer's psychology and ends it a good bit of courtroom drama.

Apparently I was really bad at posting at the end of November. I‘m at the point of the year (winter/cold), where we stay in and play video games on the weekend. This means listening to audiobooks and playing Pokémon for me!

This was a very different Christie! It has a courtroom setting and Poirot trying to solve the crime and going back in time to figure out what really happened. I liked it!

I liked this one, but it's quite different from other Christies. For one, it's got a courtroom drama, which isn't the norm for her novels, at least not so far in my publication-order reading. She also focuses more on character development than she usually does. Her characters are generally interesting, but these seem more three-dimensional and emotionally complex than usual. Elinor is particularly interesting to me.

Laughterhp Oh I just finished this one recently as well! I‘m reading in publication order too! 2y

This is another favorite Christie (although, a big part is that I watched the Suchet adaptation first and I really liked the actress playing Elinor 🤷‍♀️) Elinor is a great character and I really like how a very straightforward crime is slowly revealed to be anything but.

Working my way through the Queen of Mystery catalogue. In this one, Poirot is entreated to prove the innocence of Elinor Carlisle, who is on trial for murder and all evidence points to her guilt. This one had me guessing until the end. Lots of drama concerning inheritance and scorned love.

This was a very well laid out mystery. Who would have wanted to kill a much loved, and no bad word about, Mary? Everything is against and damming for Elinor, including her inner thoughts on doing murder. But Poirot eventually gets on to it. It slowly built up on what was told, and not told. I like how he said you can learn a lot from someone from their lies. I did fall for the red herring, But I still guessed it correctly! #whodunit

Another dog sitting weekend lays way time for undisturbed reading. May be able to finish this by end of days light.
This is a mystery of solving a woman‘s innocence of murder. Her, and a cousin by marriage, fall in love. Causing it seems quite a stir that they “may” be cut out of their rich aunts will. I‘m intrigued by what seems to stump Hercule Poirot. #whodunit

Elinor Carlisle is on trial for the murder of Mary Gerrard. There doesn't seem to be anybody else with a motive or who could have done it. But the local doctor asks Poirot for help proving her innocence.

I must admit I fell for the red herring and thought I'd done well to guess who it was early on. But of course I was wrong and Poirot's little grey cells were more than a match for mine.

This Hercule Poirot mystery is not as well known as others such as Murder on the Orient Express or Death on the Nile, but I really enjoyed it. TWO TIMES I thought I‘d figured it out, but no, I had not. This quote from writer Elizabeth George says it all: “What Agatha Christie taught me was all about the delicate placement of the red herring.” Read as part of the #readchristie2021 challenge hosted by OfficialAgathaChristie on IG ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished my book for #lmpbc group M. I always love Agatha Christie, but this one was a little different in its style. I‘ll be curious what my fellow group members think.

I‘m using the #readtiltheendreadathon tag that @TheBookDream came up with as I try to bury myself in books as the votes are counted. Sending love to my fellow Littens today.

This was my first Agatha Christie novel and I was not disappointed. The writing is very well structured and easy to read and the characters, while slightly racist in descriptions sometimes, are really well written. 3.5/5 I‘m so glad I read it, I can see why she‘s the queen of mystery.

This is one of my favorite Christie's books. The atmosphere was one of the reasons. I found the stories that Christie set in foreign places made that place seem like one of the characters.
