I adored this novel. Semi-epistolary, this book tells the story of Corrag, an accused witch living in Glencoe, who warned the MacDonalds of the impending massacre by the Campbells and William of Orange. Based upon real events and people, this story was so beautifully written and both achingly bittersweet and philosophically pertinent to me that I‘m already planning a reread. The image reminds me of a trip I took to Scotland a few years ago. 5/5⭐️

Readergrrl I definitely teared up a few times while reading this. 1y

@Cuilin #bookedintime

Here are some recommendations/possibilities for #17thcentury / #englishcivilwar !

Thanks so much for choosing this period of time first 😘! The list was initially longer, but then I realised a LOT of it was non-fiction so I discarded them 😂

I've tried to list book #1 of series, the exception being The Three Crowns by Jean Plaidy.

Cuilin You‘re welcome. I thought you‘d like that!!! Great list. 1y

This book goes by these 3 titles. Corrag tells her story in a jail cell waiting for execution for Witchcraft. She's fled her home in England for safety and found herself in the Scottish Highlands. Where she befriended the villagers of Glencoe and finally found some peace and a place to call her own. But trouble soon arrives at their doorstep. I also learned about the Glencoe Massacre of 1692. Highly recommend this for fans of Historical Fiction

I didn't not realize until the afterward that this book is based on true events. The 1692 Glencoe massacre where Scotland murdered 30 villagers - men, women, children - in their homes for failure to pledge loyalty to the king fast enough.
Rarely do I read a book and over and over think about how it would make a fantastic movie, but this one is so vividly drawn I would love to see that. A completely captivating tale from an outside perspective.

I enjoyed Corrag although the writing didn‘t flow for me, I did have to concentrate. It‘s quite a sad tale but interesting. It gives quite a good insight into the Glencoe Massacre which I didn‘t know much about. The Jacobite Rising and Rebellions lasted quite a long time really. Corrag herself is a fascinating character, quite other worldly, and I was interested to discover that she really existed. Quite a brave lady! 4⭐️

Had to keep reminding myself that it was the lady at the top of this collage who wrote it, not the one on the right who happens to share her name, works with leather & loves horses! 🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely loved this historical fiction. Was still thinking about it on Friday, so stopped by the Devon witches memorial at lunchtime.

Corrag tells her story from her prison cell, as she waits for the snow to melt, so she can face her execution for witchcraft. A lone young woman, skilled in herbs and healing, and with a love of wild places, she found her home in Glen Coe, not long before the massacre. Beautiful writing, and how hard it‘s been

rockpools been to be a woman that doesn‘t ‘fit‘. A lovely read.

Also, this statistic amazed/horrified me. “Over the previous three hundred years [from ending of Witchcraft executions in 1735 in GB] it is estimated that over 100,000 women – mostly knowledgeable, independent, old or outspoken women – stood trial, accused of witchcraft.”

Historical fiction about the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692 written through the eyes of Corrag; a nature loving woman who comes from a line of descendants that have been called ‘witch‘. She travels to and ends up living in the Scottish Highlands where she gets to know the MacDonald clan. It really humanises the people rather than them being just a part of something tragic that happened. Corrag is a fierce and strong woman 👇👇

youneverarrived who deals with herbs & doesn‘t conform (hence being labelled a witch 😒). I really felt like I was living her life; the first person narrative puts you in her shoes. A lot of the main ‘action‘ happens at the end of the book so it feels like a slow build up to that making it feel repetitive at times but it was a thoroughly immersive read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4y

Corrag is a solitary girl with a knowledge of herbs. She's also a witness to the Glencoe massacre. Put them together and she's set to be burnt for a witch. I loved Corrag's voice with its vivid, keenly felt experience of the Highlands. She is quite simply in love with life, however difficult, and with the natural world. Such beauty! The love story felt superfluous: can't she be an interesting, fully convincing character without sighing over a man?

Beautifully written historical fiction set around the Glencoe Massacre in 1692...don‘t let the title and cover of the audiobook fool you—this is not fantasy. Pickpick

Fletcher wrote a very atmospheric, compelling and beautiful novel about a difficult and brutal time period in Scotland. I loved Corrag and her connection to nature warmed by heart. I don't come across characters as memorable as Corrag very often and she will be fondly remembered by me. It is not a fast moving novel but one that focuses on characters, characters that are not only human but also animals and mountains. This is a new favorite.

#OneWordTitle
Corral by Susan Fletcher is an excellent, and interesting, example of historical fiction covering the Glencoe Massacre in Scotland in 1609.This book also covers witchcraft, or suspected witchcraft and relationships, and the difference one person can make. It is rated at 4.25 on Goodreads and I thoroughly recommend it! It has also been published under the title The Highland Witch.

Glencoe, Scotland. There was a massacre here in the 17th century, and the tagged book is set at that time.
