Cat in the Hat
Cat in the Hat | Seuss
239 posts | 389 read | 10 to read
Back in 1957, Theodor Geisel responded to an article in Life magazine that lamented the use of boring reading primers in schools. Using the pseudonym of "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name) and only two hundred twenty-three words, Geisel created a replacement for those dull primers: "The Cat in the Hat." The instant success of the book prompted Geisel and his wife to found Beginner Books, and Geisel wrote many popular books in this series, including "Hop on Pop, " "Fox in Socks, " and "Green Eggs and Ham." Other favorite titles in this series are "Go, Dog, Go!" and "Are You My Mother?" by P. D. Eastman, "A Fly Went By, " by Mike McClintock, and "Put Me in the Zoo, " by Robert Lopshire. These affordable hardcover books combine large print, easy vocabulary, and large, bright illustrations in stories kids will want to read again and again. Grades 1 - Grades 2.

This book has many aspects of poetry. It follows a goofy and fun character the cat in the hat who visits two children on a rainy day with his companions thing 1 and thing 2 in which they went on an adventure together

This is the perfect book for helping young children learn how to read! It's very entertaining with great rhyming schemes. I would love to use this book in my classroom one day.

I used to love reading and listening to Dr. Seuss books. The Cat in the Hat is one of my favorites. I love this book because of the silly imagery and the funny rhymes. This is an absolute classic that every child should have in their library.

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess, 1957. This story starts out with two siblings who are bored in their house with nothing to do. Then walks in a tall and human-like cat that walks and talks. The cat marches in and begins to show the children fun games and tricks. Although he wants to have fun, he brings chaos into the house by making messes and bringing in his pals thing 1 and thing 2. Luckily, the cat and his pals clean up just in time!

blurb
Kylenbosworth

I love Dr. Suess books because they are so silly and creative! This book is very unique in that it portrays a cat who walks and talks like a human! This book would be great for preschool and school-age children to enjoy!

I'm back!

Please accept my offering of a morning blep pic as apology for my long absence.

For some reason, my Litsy app stopped working. I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but was unable to. It was only this morning discovered I can utilize it through the website without the app.

I have a lot of catching up to do on posting what I've been reading!

Hmmm

monkeygirlsmama I am all for standing up against racism, but at the same time I'm not sure I can get behind this particular movement. 4y
Just_reading Agree @monkeygirlsmama! Even if we have to use them as an example of what used to be common, I don't see the good of just banishing them to be forgotten. 4y
TheBookHippie Good. Dr. Seuss had a long history of publishing racist and anti-Semitic work, spanning back to the 1920s when he was a student at Dartmouth College. It‘s only 6. Use his other books. (edited) 4y
See All 8 Comments
Sumi I had no idea of Dr Seuss‘ racist leanings (even though I‘m pretty sure that I read And to Think I saw it on Mulberry Street - but that sort of depiction of Asian people was so much more common when I was a child that it didn‘t register.). If I hadn‘t read about the inspiration of the Cat in the Hat I would never have guessed.) I feel like they have acted in a measured & appropriate manner. 4y
KatieDid927 @monkeygirlsmama Which “particular movement” are you referring to? Pointing out that racist content is racist? Or the lies in the media about him being “canceled”? No one is canceling him, and it‘s his own estate making the decision not to publish more copies of books with racist imagery. That‘s not banning books, it‘s taking a moral stance. No one is banning or destroying books here. 4y
KatieDid927 @Just_reading No one is banning them though, that‘s the thing that frustrates me about this false narrative. Choosing not to print more copies is not the same thing as destroying every copy that ever existed. 4y
KatieDid927 @TheBookHippie I couldn‘t agree more. And the false narrative that these books are being banned completely is actually a really transparent attempt to silence any and all criticism of his racism. 4y
TheBookHippie @KatieDid927 EXACTLY. 👏🏼✌🏻 4y

1. I‘ve read almost all of Dr. Seuss‘ books last year. This year I‘m working on Kris Radish. Next year I‘m going to start on SK (maybe buddy reads with @ElizaMarie )

2. Not really. I don‘t read much romance.

3. Maybe ten. Not many because my disability only allows me to wear certain shoes.

This well-known P book written and illustrated by Theodore Geisel aka Dr. Seuss is a timeless classic that students love! The Cat in the Hat is about a crazy cat who pays a visit to Sally and Sam while their mother is out and he has a few tricks up his sleeve, but somehow this crazy cat ends up teaching the children a very important lesson. This is great book for PR and can be used in a lesson on poetry or a lesson about Dr. Seuss. #ucflae3414su30

Emmaturtle3 ESOL Strategy #32 works perfectly for PR with this book, students will be able to work together and learn from each other. UDL 9.1 can be used when explaining the expectations for the PR and the activities that they will be doing together. This link https://www.childsplayaz.org/download.php/schools/seuss-poetry-packet-schools was a great find. It helps students with poetry, identifying rhyming words and it also includes standards; super helpful! (edited) 4y
DrSpalding Not all books that rhyme are considered poetry. Knowing that the cat in the hat does things that are out of this world, this is better categorized as modern fantasy. 4y

The Cat in the Hat is a classic children's MF picture book that was written by published in 1957 and continues to be a favorite among the young and old to this day. It is about a mischievous cat who brings along a couple other mischief makers and causes havoc in the home of Sally and her brother a wet day. #ucflae3414su20

Ameyer32 I would use this story as a fun RA to the class. It can get quite silly and the kids can truly appreciate the rhyme as it is read aloud. in 1980 The Cat in the Hat won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award.
4y
Ameyer32 A great UDL for this book would be 3.3, guide information processing and visualization. I would stop along the way to ask comprehension questions and guiding questions to ensure understanding. A great ESOL strategy would be to 21, record the story reading for ELLs. I would allow the student to listen to it while looking at the text and following along. 4y
See All 7 Comments
Nkaufmann Apryl, I love the UDL and ESOL strategies you used for this book. I think they are both perfect. It‘s important when doing a read-aloud to ask comprehension questions and also have that guiding question so that the students know what to pay attention to when reading. I also think it‘s a great idea to record the story and let the ELLs listen to it prior to you reading aloud to the class, to help them get some background knowledge on the book. 4y
ashleyshugars Apryl, such a classic! LOVE IT! I checked out your resource and some of those activities are so fun with this book! My favorite was “rewrite the story from the fish‘s point of view!” It gets a lot of ideas flowing, thanks for this! 4y
Emmaturtle3 I too read this book, definitely a timeless classic that students will always enjoy! I like how you said it can get the students silly, it is so important to ensure that our students are having fun while reading. I also love your idea of recording a story for ELL‘s! 4y
DrSpalding Interesting that this classic won the Laurie Ingalls Wilder Award! It is a fun read aloud to students and it assists with them understanding rhyme which is the earliest developing phonological awareness skill. 4y

Another reason I love this book is the rhyming and beat the story has. This is a perfect book for children just beginning to learn how to read. If they don't know fully how to pronounce the word, they can use the word it rhymes with for context.

“The Cat in the Hat“ by Dr. Suess, 1957. Picture book. This is one of the first books I fell in love with as a kid. Suess has a very specific way of illustrating his characters which I love. The Cat in the Hat and other Dr. Suess books are a huge part of American literature.
