Griffin and Sabine
Griffin and Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence | Nick Bantock
Don't miss The Pharos Gate, the final volume in the Griffin & Sabine story. Published simultaneously with the 25th-anniversary edition of Griffin & Sabine, the book finally shares what happened to the lovers.Griffin: It's good to get in touch with you at last. Could I have one of your fish postcards? I think you were rightthe wine glass has more impact than the cup. SabineBut Griffin had never met a woman named Sabine. How did she know him? How did she know his artwork? Who is she? Thus begins the strange and intriguing correspondence of Griffin and Sabine. And since each letter must be pulled from its own envelope, the reader has the delightful, forbidden sensation of reading someone else's mail. Griffin & Sabine is like no other illustrated novel: appealing to the poet and artist in everyone and sure to inspire a renaissance in the fine art of letter-writing, it tells an extraordinary story in an extraordinary way.

How to describe? A epistolary picture book? Or, as my 7 year old called it "The Jolly Postman for grown-ups." It would be a mistake, however, to think it a mere novelty - yes, it's lots of fun to remove & read the 'real' letters, but I was also sucked into the intriguing relationship developing between the two characters. That they've never met or spoken & all communication is via the written word is also a tantalising prospect. Good cliffhanger!

A little World Book Day gift to myself! My daughter chose one for herself as well and I chose one for her because choosing books for her is even more fun than choosing them for myself!

She was also very intrigued to discover that this book is a quote Jolly Postman for grown-ups unquote!

KathyWheeler What is a Jolly Postman? 4y
readingjedi @KathyWheeler It's a children's book that my daughter adores and I've read about a million times! 😂 4y
MandaMT I love this book. And the Jolly Postman. Another grown up Take on this kind of concept is S. By Doug Dorst and JJ Abrams. Two University students communicate by writing notes to each other in the margins of a library book. Other notes, flyers, and scraps of paper are put between the pages. 4y

Lovely, lovely book that I will be reviewing for Postcrossing.

It's very very short, but there's so much visual stuff going on with the postcards and letters that it doesn't matter. Sabine has been seeing Griffin's art in her dreams for a long time, and she finally gets in contact with him via postcard... The book includes envelopes with letters you have to take out and read, as you see in my photo! Most of it is postcards, though.

Book 134 of 2019

@Come-read-with-me recommended this to me and I LOVED it!! Sabine sends a postcard to Griffin even though they had never met and they continue to write each other. The book is fill of their cool envelopes, artwork and actual letters that come out!

GeekGirlOnAQuest I read this book years ago when it first came out and loved it! I didn‘t know he made sequels to it - I‘ll have to read this again and the others! Thanks for reminding me about this great book - I also loved the way it had letters you could actually take out and read. 5y
Come-read-with-me @rather_be_reading This is such a wonderful series of books and I‘m delighted that you like it! Being able to take a letter out of an envelope is so much fun!!! The other three books are great - their love story continues! 5y
marleed @Come-read-with-me There are actually 7 books since he revisited the original trilogy later. I have all but one of them. 5y
Come-read-with-me @marleed. 7?!??? I need to catch up. I knew there were four but have completely missed the last three 😟 (edited) 5y
marleed @Come-read-with-me I was so obsessed with the original books. I brought them into work where I inspired several days of much too long lunch breaks as my co workers opened and read each letter. It was only 2 years ago that I saw the story was revisited - I‘m missing Alexandria :(. 5y

This was my second time reading this book. The first time was several years ago. Interesting epistolary novel, quick and relatively short read. Book set up as postcards and actual letters that are removed from envelopes adhered to the page. Will probably read the rest of the series.

The ultimate epistolary series for me is Nick Bantock's Griffin and Sabine trilogy. Told in postcards and letters, it's an interactive reading experience. I borrowed copies from a friend when I was a teen and I knew I had to get my own set. I still remember buying the boxed set in Barnes & Noble in LA back in 2002.
