3.5/5🐍. “Attention taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer.” Bea and Dan travel to France after deciding to take a 3 month holiday. Dan is unaware that Bea is worth millions, but she refuses to use it. While in France they travel to a hotel being run by her brother Alex. A tragedy breaks Bea‘s life wide open. The story examines family, love, and money and what people will do for it. Would recommend.

2/5🐯. I was really excited about this novel based on the synopsis. However I was underwhelmed and considered bailing several times. The long drawn out passages related to Naamah going out to swim were long and drawn out. The amount of sex was unnecessary. Would not recommend 😤

3.5/5 🧩. Good quick read. Great first novel from this Nigerian author! Highly entertaining.

charl08 I just finished this one too, as my work has shortlisted her book for a whole university read project. I'm wondering what the students would make of it. 6y
RedbagReadbooks @charl08 That is a good question. It would be interesting to know, especially when it comes to identifying with the character of Ayoola or Korede. I flip flopped a lot on whether some of Ayoolas actions were really intentional to get her sisters attention, or if she really cared so little for Korede or anyone else that she felt no remorse for the things she had done. 6y

4.5/5👏🏻. Boyne never fails to entice the reader and produce a wonderful story. From the first section you are hooked and invested in the characters (even if it is a deep hatred). Each section uses a unique voice and dialogue flow. I also loved the small reference to his previous adult release The Hearts Invisible Furies🥰. Did anyone else catch that? Definitely read!

5/5⭐️. I understand the controversy behind the idea of this book in relation to the age of Wavy and the events that occurred between her and Kellen. However, for those that have lived in situations similar to Wavy‘s and experienced the hurt, loss, and unbelievable moments where you have to grow up fast, it keeps you grounded. Growing up way before your time and beyond your years is difficult, and unnerving. It provides you with a reality check.

4/5🤰🏼. Great book about The possible future of genetics 🧬, the use of genetics to create designer babies, and the financial difference and opportunities that are available for different socioeconomic classes of women. I wasn‘t crazy about the ending, however, the book as a whole was great.

Reviewsbylola I added this to my TBR when I saw @Cinfhen post about it! 6y
Cinfhen I had to think for a few minutes about the ending @Aluciddreamer I thought it was a little too tidy and a bit of an easy way out. I really liked the dystopian aspect of this story. 6y

RedbagReadbooks @Cinfhen I agree. I wanted Jane to have more of a backbone and I was hoping she would have been there by the end. I wasn‘t crazy about her ending up with Mei 😕. But the book was very thought provoking especially with the leaps and bounds that technology takes every year. 6y
Cinfhen Yea, I thought ending up living at Mei was a weak ending. But the ideas presented and look at class, motherhood, wealth, family, responsibility were all REALLY GOOD (edited) 6y
RedbagReadbooks @Cinfhen I agree. I slide through the book very quickly for all of the presented ideas. I thought the author was really just scratching the surface on each of these characters. I think I wanted her to go deeper. 6y
Cinfhen Yes, I‘ve seen the same criticism from others. I think that‘s where her debut roots start to show! 6y

3/5🦊. Kim Brooks takes us into her world as a mother that was arrested for leaving her four year old son in the car while she ran into the store. She explores, very briefly, different views and anxieties that parents experience in today‘s world. I thought her explorations into each subject were just too short for me. It did make me want to explore more about this topic.

8little_paws I found the idea of parenting so depressing after reading this 6y

4/5 ❤️. I throughly enjoyed this book. A young woman attempts to piece together her past following the death of her mother. The story is built around her mother autopsy report. While many parts of the autopsy are unremarkable her mother lived many struggles and hardships of her own. Laura tried to understand her place in life by attempting to understand her mother better. Great read for the second book of the year.

3.5/5. Um.....that was quite a trip. I am not even sure which parts of the book were real and which were fabricated in the narrators mind. All I know is that she seemed 🦇 💩 🤪

Nope I am not giving this a rating. Hanna is non-verbal but intelligent but refuses to speak. Hanna spends the novel trying to “save “ her dad from her her mother. I did not like how mental illness was portrayed for this child. References were made through out the book about incidents stemming from her childhood involving her mother. I almost feel like her mother was the unstable one. Just.......nope

Reecaspieces I didn‘t finish it either. 🤢 6y
RedbagReadbooks @Reecaspieces I finished it but by the end I just felt sorry for Hanna. My daughter suffers from ODD/ADHD and I just did not like the mother and fathers choices when dealing with Hanna‘s behavior. I agree something was wrong but they both seemed selfish about it. 6y

4.5/5📖. Mae and Edith are sent to live with their father after their mother attempts suicide. The father has not seen them in 14 years. This book is visceral. Each character looks at the world from their own mentally dysfunctional lens. I wanted to feel empathetic toward each of the characters, but their narratives were turned so inwards, I couldn‘t even feel bad for them. Fantastic read. Highly recommend 📖📖
