Language of Flowers
Language of Flowers | Vanessa Diffenbaugh
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what s been missing in her life. And when she s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness. Look for special features inside. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the growth of the MC Victoria and the fact that the story ended realistically. It‘s a coming of age story of a young girl going through foster care and her struggles with her ability to love and trust not just other people but herself. I enjoyed learning about the language of flowers as well. It made me look at the beauty around me a bit differently ☺️

Today‘s Prompt: FLOWER SHOP

After sleeping in the woods for some time, hunger and cold made her walk boldly into a “flower shop” and ask to help the florist.

To me this book stood for unconditional love, for hardship, for talent, for disappointment, and for working for what you really want.

The main character‘s (Victoria Jones) anger problems made me dislike her. She is a selfish snob. She almost made her bus driver crash by throwing her backpack at him over her rudely chewing gum for one thing. I read spoilers which say that she becomes a mother, and I was angry about it to the point where I bailed on this book because I predicted she will be an abusive mother. Flowers had symbolism, but I hated Victoria so much I didn‘t care.

I just finished reading The Language of Flowers. It‘s a coming of age story about a girl who has just been emancipated from foster care. Basically the only thing she likes besides food is flowers, and her knowledge of them steers her life in an interesting direction.
When I first started it I had a hard time putting it down. It had a satisfying conclusion.

2.5/5⭐ This book is told from the perspective of a strong-willed, very interesting character. The first 60% was captivating, but the conclusion devolved into a complicated version of “having a baby solves all problems.“ The interpersonal conflicts aren't worked through at all, just solved automatically. Given the initial complexity of the main character, I expected something better.

I really enjoyed how the main character communicated with flowers in her personal and professional life using the Victorian language of flowers. It was hard to understand Victoria‘s choices most of the time, but she came from a very unstable background, so I had to keep reminding myself of that. I was very annoyed how she handled (or didn‘t handle) learning she was pregnant and many decisions after that. I‘m glad it ended well.

I stopped reading this book because I hate the main character. Victoria has a huge anger problem. She likes to throw stuff at people. She batters the bus driver for being grossed out by her stealing food and eating it with her mouth open, and that was the last straw for this book. It looks innocent and cute, but Victoria‘s behavior is so horrendous that I lost interest in it. I found spoilers and hate the idea of her being a mother.

Spring means flowers!

I don‘t garden at the moment, but I‘d like to grow herbs at some point.

I love to read on the patio anytime. Spring brings not only warmer temperatures, but also the sun angles are better than in winter.

Tea or lemonade.

2️⃣ I used to grow herbs but I‘m not good with plants. On my patio I have a thriving aloe vera 🪴that is only doing well because I don‘t touch it.🤷🏻‍♀️

3️⃣ We are warm here most of the year. If there are trade winds I love to read outside or the beach but not when it‘s humid. 😓

4️⃣ Good lemonade 🍋any time & plantation iced tea.🍹

Play if you haven‘t!🤗

My good deed for the day. 🌸

Our Cataloger at the library has been stuck at home for an entire year. She‘s someone who thrives in a social environment, her husband is in a nursing home, & she‘s been isolated & lonely since last March. She finally returns tomorrow & I want her to know that she was missed. I also got a small, quilted owl decoration for her husband who has a particular penchant for the wise, little birds. 🦉 Too pretty not to share!

Im not sure how I feel about this book. I'm torn between thinking it's beautiful and hating the main character. I can't blame her for doing what she does because she never had a support system but still it makes me upset. I almost bailed a few times but I am glad I finished. Sorry for the lame review but I don't think I have words to describe it fully.

I really enjoyed this novel. Chapters alternated from past to present and the stories build beautifully on each other. It‘s a story of a young woman learning about love and forgiveness; how to receive love; romantically, familial, and for herself. It was enraging and frustrating half the time, but the protagonist is a damaged underdog you can‘t help but to love and root for. Not to mention, this book really does educate you about flowers.
