This one is darker than the others, for sure. I liked that they started communicating with each other earlier in this one. The neighbour kid‘s snake sneaking into his house all the time and freaking him out was hilarious! This story runs congruent with the last book, and it‘s cool to see some of the same scenes from different perspectives.

I may have liked this one more than the first one, which I was absolutely not expecting. The amazing narration of Jacob Morgan really cranked it up a notch. Another narrator I love voices the next brother in the next book, so I may just love them even more as we go! Cute story, and I love how Amy Award gets around/abandons the whole “the couple must break up at 80% of the book.”

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I can‘t tell if Parker is a genius for making this all so complicated, or just horrible at telling a story in a coherent way. If your book needs a 22 page glossary that does little to clarify anything, and your reader can go from knowing what‘s going on to completely confused with the turn of a page, you‘ve done something VERY wrong.

This is so heartbreaking. The intersections of race and orientation do so much to harm Broome and everyone like him. I just wanted to give him the love he wanted so many times in this book. The racism has to go. The homophobia has to go. Children, and all people, should be allowed to be themselves and loved for who they are.

The adventure of it was good. This was written by Steves when he was 23 and it reads just like a privileged 23 year old white man wrote it. It could be written by a well to do white college boy today. It made it really tough to get through, especially since poor Gene was so sick for most of the trip and Rick didn‘t even seem to care. I‘m actually surprised Gene and Rick are still friends after this trip.
