This book was even better the second time around. It‘s a wonderful, funny, entertaining reminder to fight the good fight. I can only imagine what he‘d be saying now if he were still with us in 2025. This book would never be read or taken seriously by a conservative audience, but it absolutely should be. If nothing else, this is a prime example of why conservatives are so afraid of history and historians.

GingerAntics Original Review: This book is funny and entertaining, but also so very important. It addresses some of the hypocrisy of modern conservative thought regarding the constitution along with the actual history on the subject. This book is most assuredly not for a conservative audience. 4d

Scientific takedown of creationism. A good intro to quantum physics. It does get very slightly technical in some places. Quick read.

Mehso-so

This felt like 6 shows that had adults playing teens, and 1 that actually cast teens. After Fresh Prince, So-Called, and Dawson‘s, it felt like the book deteriorated into ways show business is horrible to people - people in show business, fans, and people in general - and how that was expressed in the next four shows.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics There was a lot of “no one had ever done this before,” but she said the exact same thing about the show before it when it did pretty much the same thing. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics Maybe I‘m not the target audience? I grew up watching Fresh Prince and Dawson‘s Creek. The rest of the shows I never watched and hadn‘t even heard of some of them. I have seen some episodes of Friday Night Lights, but everyone I knew who watched that show was a middle aged woman, so I never saw it as a teen show. When I asked these fans now, they were all baffled that anyone would call it a teen show. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics “It had teens in it, but it wasn‘t specifically aimed at teens. It was a family show maybe” was the general consensus. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
See All 14 Comments
GingerAntics If Glassman was trying to bring new fans to these shows, she utterly failed. At first, I thought I‘d check out the shows I hadn‘t seen before, but that quickly deteriorated. I do want to check out My So-Called Life. Hearing about the crappy way Apatow treated the Freaks and Geeks cast, I‘m not about to support that. Five minutes into the discussion of The OC the creators were quoted as saying “too Jewish” twice. Nope. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics Then it turned out the directors and crew talked crap about the actors behind their backs. Double hope. I was actually really excited to watch Glee. I knew several fans when it was on the air, and I just didn‘t watch it for whatever reason. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics Then she talked about the writer/creator of Glee venting his own body shaming, homophobia, racism, and general bad humanity through the characters - making actors say and do horrible things to each other for his own joy? Hard pass. 1w
TheBookHippie 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 I‘ve watched zero of these shows 👵🏼 I did see a few Fresh Prince episodes 🤷🏻‍♀️but that‘s it. 1w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm intrigued because I've watched 5 of the 7 (not Glee nor FNL), but not sure if care enough about them to read behind the scenes drama. 15 years ago, sure. Today? Meh. If you can watch My So-Called Life, I'd suggest that one of the bunch. One short season, a 90s time capsule, and pretty Jared Leto if you're into that. 7d
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yeah, it‘s less BTS and more (supposed) cultural importance. There is a bit of BTS type stuff. I don‘t think I would have gotten through the whole book if it was just BTS stuff. My favourite to hear about, honestly, was Fresh Prince. lol 7d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie lol that‘s fair… this was pretty niche watching, so if you didn‘t have someone in the right age group who actually watched these shows, you‘d really have no reason on to watch them. This was definitely a millennial anthem in a sense. Glee probably did have some gen Z and Fresh Prince had some younger gen X, mostly millennial shows. 7d
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I find it interesting my childhood shows still run 😂 I mostly watched old movies with my grandma and I‘m so grateful. I watched Gilmore Girls with my daughter, Fraiser with Mr BookHippie- but we mostly watched VHS BLOCKBUSTER 😂 I worked more than two jobs 14-40 so not much TV for me 🙃 7d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie yeah, long work hours do make it hard to do much outside of work. Gilmore Girls was a brilliant show. I really love that show! VHS Blockbuster seriously brings back memories. lol 7d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I feel like Gilmore Girls would have made a better teen show than some of the nonsense that was listed in this book. Maybe more men need to get comfortable with that show, because seriously that is a show full of powerful women and girls! 7d

Perhaps Glassman should have called ANY Celtic Thunder fan, ANY Damian McGinty fan, ANYone involved in creating Celtic Thunder or literally ANYone in all of Ireland. It‘s really bad when you mispronounce the name of an internationally famous band. Just saying. This ain‘t Boston where they are so disconnected from the Irish Celtic roots they think a C sounds like an S. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Forget the Alamo: The True Story of the Myth That Made Texas | Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson, Jason Stanford

Valuable and important reading in modern society, especially if you were ever taught the catechism of Texas history.

I didn‘t grow up in Texas, so I dodged these lessons in school, but I did learn a lot about Texas history, including The Alamo, during an internship with a historical society.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics 2/ The trust I put in the people who clearly knew way more about Texas history than I did was, sadly, misplaced. This is a valuable lesson about how easy it is trust the wrong people, but digging for the truth is what is most important (and what distinguishes a scholar from a hobbyist). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics 3/ In all fairness, some of the people I worked with during my internship (mostly the few people who were actually being paid and scholars themselves) were not shy about the short comings of the leaders/heroes of Texas history. Those folks no doubt read this book, nodded a lot, and have been facepalming about the Collins collection since the reality of it came to light long after I interned there. 1w
GingerAntics 4/ The “heroes” of Texas aren‘t heroic at all, no matter how many statues of them exist, even if some of those statues literally reside in a room called “The Hall of Heroes.” The first time I ever heard anything about The Alamo came from a talk Phil Collins gave at a historical society in Texas. I get wanting to have a piece of your favourite moments in history, but seriously, Phil? Let‘s have some intellectual ethics, shall we? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics 5/ Things like this are why scholars always do further research and never depend on one person, or group of people, for all of their information. This book highlights exactly why one should never take a single story of history at face value. ALWAYS look for more. It is out there. You will find it. Also, do not trust pop stars for scholarly pursuits, ever. 1w
GingerAntics Also, the bloody Alamo plaza is actually a grave yard! So I do believe it‘s haunted… by the ghosts of indigenous people buried under the bleeding sidewalk! GET OFF THEIR GRAVES!!! Turns out, the state of TX knows about this but won‘t acknowledge it because of a state law forbidding anything being built over a cemetery! Their Alamo myth is more important than their own state laws! Go figure! 1w

I greatly enjoyed this book, but I am really struggling with how to review it. I am much closer to this madness that I wish I were, and I don‘t want to put myself or my future at risk by saying anything that could identify me to people who could literally destroy my career or any hope of ever having one… but it is hard to not include those things, because the lies told about The Alamo are truly disturbing and disgusting.

GingerAntics As a historian, this is not what I stand for. This is not why I got into the field. This is the 21st century, and we MUST do better. 1w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m trying to channel your courage at the moment. I don‘t think I‘m a reincarnation of any brave person in history, but I am me in this really messed up part of history and I can be brave on my own. OH MY GOD PHIL COLLINS IS A TRULY MESSED UP INDIVIDUAL!!! 1w
RamsFan1963 I read this a couple of years ago, and I remember how disgusted I was by how far the "history" taught to me and others in school was from reality. Texas schools might as well show the movie The Alamo, with John Wayne, and call it a documentary. 1w
See All 17 Comments
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 I didn‘t move to Texas until the tail end of 8th grade, so I totally missed this in school, but I got a HEAVY dose of it while interning with a historical society in Texas, so yeah. The story that is told is SO very different from reality. Case in point… the first “battle”/“victory” was really more of a discussion. “Give it back.” “No.” “Okay, bye.” This is now sold as a battle and a victory? It‘s barely even a conversation. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 1w
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 plus, there is the whole, Phil Collins addition to this. The dude thinks he‘s is a reincarnated hero of the Alamo. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I just cannot even. And his SHADY AF collection. 😵‍💫 I just… WOW!!! 1w
RamsFan1963 @GingerAntics I never cared for Phil Collins to start with, but his inclusion to this story is so bizarre. However it's a tried an true conservative mantra, especially in these MAGA days, if you repeat a lie often enough, and loud enough, it becomes the truth. 1w
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics There are days… 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 1w
TheBookHippie @RamsFan1963 @GingerAntics he‘s always seemed CREEPY to me and just ICK. Messed up is right. So bizarro world. 1w
IriDas Wait, Phil Collins the singer? 1w
GingerAntics @IriDas yes indeed, THAT Phil Collins! 1w
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 it always seems weird to me that an English guy gave a crap about the Alamo… just sure why not. 1w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie first psychic told him he was the reincarnation of a guy who left before the fall of the Alamo to bring back help, so he survived. Then later he decided he was the reincarnation of Davy Crockett. No lie. A photo comparison of him vs a painting of Jim Bowie MySA San Antonio News saying Phil is the reincarnation of Jim! https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/Phil-Collins-is-a-reincarnated-A... 1w
IriDas What?!?!? Just when I thought things could not get weirder in this world. That is nuts. I suppose his money keeps him out of Arkham. ;) 1w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie and apparently the guy he was originally told he was the reincarnation of was the first Alamo artefact he ever got, so he felt like it made sense that he got his own receipt for selling his own saddle back. Because that makes so much sense. No idea why he‘s decided he‘s Crockett now. 💁🏼‍♀️ 1w
GingerAntics @IriDas he‘s still alive… it‘s not too late to send him, still. The reincarnation thing now, how almost his entire collection has turned out to be “I want it to be this, so I guess it is!” It might be time to 5150 him! 1w

Conservatives, especially Texas conservatives, are so worried about how white children feel about their ancestors being slave owners and slave owning being framed as bad in history class. They are never worried about how other children feel while sitting in history class or how their white classmates treat them because of what is taught in those classes.

Here goes nothing. Let‘s break some hearts!
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I should know better, by now, not to even bother with Irish-American versions of Irish history. These works are why I have never attempted my own manuscript of Irish history and never will. This is mostly mythology. She makes these claims that have little to no supporting evidence, but no footnotes or citations, so no way of checking her sources. This makes this book dubious as best and a racist at worst. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics Unfortunately, we jump almost entirely from the mythological history to the famine - where she claims the English weren‘t as helpful as they could have been but Queen Victoria was great. I‘m going to need you to show your work on that, sweetie, because the math (and currently available sources) aren‘t mathing on that. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics She claimed sectarian violence - namely The Troubles - was hundreds of years of violence, but fails to mention ALL of that violence stems from the English trying to capture Ireland as their own, while the Irish fought them off in favour of self governance (don‘t even get me started on her precious Catholic Church‘s role in that). Yeah, this was a uniquely Irish problem. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
See All 10 Comments
GingerAntics One could definitely NOT ask India, Jamaica, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, the UAE, Malta, Kenya, Botswana, the Maldives, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Zambia, or any number of other former Colonies of the British empire about such things. This is Ireland‘s (and the Irish people‘s) failing. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics Not having the Bible in public schools is a “modern tragedy?” Really? Gross. Someone is a good little minnow muncher. I went to catholic school too, and I don‘t see any need to force my beliefs on others. Please be a little more Irish and extend the same courtesy to others. Thanks. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 1w
GingerAntics I‘m going to need to see some credentials and some citations, because the modern history of Ireland seems a little screwed, and none of my academic sources agree with her on many accounts. I‘m so glad she works at a Catholic college, but I am tremendously grateful I have never had to sit in one of her classes because I read more accurate accounts of Irish history in Middle School. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics I can‘t imagine sitting through 13 weeks of this drivel with a grade on the line. FIN … or perhaps Le gach dea-ghuí would be more appropriate. 1w
GingerAntics I was once working on a paper in grad school where I found a scholarly paper claiming that the Irish people were now embracing Oliver Cromwell as a not so bad bloke… I had an Irish classmate who REALLY begged to differ and laughed at the paper because it was written by an English person and clearly had no clue what it was talking about. I thought of that paper when she talked about English aid during the famine. 🤣😂🤣 1w
Bookwomble Whoa! Sounds like an awful and biased account! Thanks for your review. 1w
GingerAntics @Bookwomble the bias is weird, too. Sometimes it is in the Irish people‘s favour, and other times it‘s in the English people‘s favour. It‘s really weird. 1w

Texreader Good luck with the rest of your week! I can sympathize; I have a quite awful presentation tomorrow to a client‘s all-men board of directors about the conclusion of a sexual harassment investigation I completed. And it‘s got all the gory details. And I do recall this being an excellent book. I need to read it again, but not listen to it. 1w
GingerAntics @Texreader 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ oh my god, you definitely have a bad week ahead. Oof. I just have no words. I need a stiff drink just reading that description. You need a full on vacation and a mountain of books,.. oof hang in there. We‘re here for you if you need to scream or rage! 1w
GingerAntics @Texreader I know the solution to these situations is less men and more women, but just like they say if you need your doctor to take you seriously to take a man with you… I hope you have a guy on your side of the table. Even if he just sits next to you on his phone… maybe throw in a tisk or a head shake of disappointment every now and then to accentuate your points. Seriously, why are men so gross sometimes? I just don‘t get it. 1w

Texreader @GingerAntics Today is over and fortunately the right decisions were made but this experience was horrible. Sadly the woman was more problematic than him. As the CEO he was responsible for her actions. She was a world-class manipulator and he fell for her and all her shenanigans. So I still have to clean up the mess they both have left behind. And I wanted to wish you best of luck on Friday. I sure hope you‘re doing ok. 1w
GingerAntics @Texreader oof, that is always hard! It so does not help other women who are not also shady in some way in these situations. I‘m glad they made the right decisions, though. Friday should be better than yesterday because I don‘t have to go to my old floor and the site of my PTSD! Fingers crossed. 1w
Texreader @GingerAntics yes 🤞🏻 And I agree, she is a perfect model for some men who think that‘s what all women are like. It‘s so sad. She called herself a princess in the workplace and she had everyone terrified of her. As secretary to the CEO she pretty much got her way for many years. Lovely and meandering in the best possible way. Seriously, I‘m not sure how Queen Elizabeth‘s handbags haven‘t gotten some kind of honour for their decades of silent and faithful service. I got oddly emotional at points, especially later in the book (maybe because I personally remember the emotion of those moments). I‘m glad it ended shortly after William and Kate‘s wedding, because I bawled at the end of The Crown and could not handle that again.

GingerAntics This portrays Charles as hard done by and far more innocent in the collapse of his first marriage that is fair. Even though this is written by an American, it still does a wonderful job of telling the story of the late Queen. #SallyBedellSmith #ElizabethTheQueen #ElizabethII 1w

This is amazingly philosophical. It addresses the neurology behind in-groups and out-groups. It clearly lays out the ways perception is entirely inside of our brains, and even how by the time we are aware of any given moment, that moment has already passed. Eagleman takes a profoundly complex topic and makes it accessible to the masses to the point that it becomes entirely enjoyable.

The ending felt very unsatisfying. The whole book I felt like the ending was going to involve divorce, but the ending didn‘t even involve a proper ending or closure. This book is funny in the way of a Troost book, but it had a much darker tone because, ultimately, this is his addiction and recovery memoir. It‘s actually heartbreaking in some ways, and it‘s hard to put my finger on exactly why.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I honestly wish there was one more Troost book after this one (this is the last he published), just to have that happy, goofy, inquisitive feeling of the first two books in this trilogy, and to know how things turned out. #JMaartenTroost #HeadhunstersOnMyDoorstep #addiction #recovery #alcoholism #audiobook 2w
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury yes, very different tone to the first two. I have mixed feelings here. The ending was almost just “well, the deadline is in five minutes and I have to attach it to the email first.” Did that happen in his little one bedroom or efficiency apartment or at home with his wife and children? Who knows? We may never know. I really hope it‘s the latter. 2w

I‘m not sure if this is funny or tragic. He‘s returned to Kiribati without his wife and children (apparently they have 2 sons now), having seemingly run away from home after going to rehab for alcoholism (at least he‘s not drinking), and he‘s waxing poetic about how things are just how they were when they left. It‘s funny in its way, but it‘s also heartbreaking. I seriously feel like this is a harbinger of divorce ahead.

I live just across the river from North Dakota and it‘s a very different world on the other side of the river. They have more restaurants and then it‘s just flat land. I don‘t know why they haven‘t left yet, either.

Prairiegirl_reading I live north of North Dakota and we like to say that we haven‘t left because we are frozen to the ground. 😂 All joking aside it is very nice here in Manitoba in the summer. 2w
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading 🤣😂🤣 that could be the same here. Accept this winter has been relatively mild (knock on wood). I‘d still rather be on your side of the boarder. I cannot even with this side of it. 2w
Prairiegirl_reading @GingerAntics what is going on down there is horrific! People who still support that maniac I‘ll never understand. 2w
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading girl, same! I proudly voted for Kamala and Coach Walz. I don‘t get these people. Some of them are now claiming they were hypnotised and couldn‘t not vote for him no matter how much they tried. 🙄 Searching for a job amidst this nonsense is absolutely demoralising and seems to be more and more pointless by the day as more and more people get laid off, fired, and whatever else his people are doing. 2w

I feel like our entire society would be SO much better if everyone did A LOT more of this. Just putting that out there.

Do you get the impression that it was… I don‘t know… maybe… hot?
#JMaartenTroost #TheSexLivesOfCannibals #hot

julesG Nuh, sounds like a bit warm to me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2w
GingerAntics @julesG just a little. He‘s half Dutch. He‘s probably just used to much milder temperatures. 2w
julesG Guess I would melt. 2w
GingerAntics @julesG part of me is melting just listening to the description of it. Let‘s stay home! Well, you stay home. I‘m trying to figure out how to escape my home. 2w

Yeah, that‘s not what I want to hear when I‘m in a plane… I don‘t want to have to bail out of a landing attempt either.

He wrote this kind of lovely, kind of funny story of how he and his wife met. When she read it over his shoulder, this is what she had to say about it. 🤣😂🤣

Started this while in donating today. I‘m a little concerned how quickly my phone has adjusted to properly autocorrecting the word cannibal. 🤣😂🤣

THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY ACCURATE!!!
Alexis Hall posted on IG about which London Calling character you are by birth month, and absolutely nailed it for me!!! Absolutely all of this. Spot on. It‘s like Hall is running around here somewhere. Maybe those aren‘t ghosts at all, but Alexis Hall running around my house at night. Hm.

julesG I got the March James Royce-Royce. 😂😂 2w
GingerAntics @julesG I saw that, but it wouldn‘t let me respond to you for some reason. You‘re the ~mysterious one!!! Love it! 2w
julesG Mysterious is good. 😂 2w

GingerAntics @julesG exactly! You can be whatever you want! Just don‘t name your baby the same name as you AND your spouse. That‘s a bit much. 2w
julesG 🤣🤣🤣 What was AH thinking when he came up with this idea??? 2w
GingerAntics @julesG 🤣😂🤣 that two men with the exact same name who fell in love and decided to hyphenate would absolutely have a THIRD James Royce-Royce? 2w
julesG Yep. Absolutely bonkers. Can't imagine that it'd happen in real life and am probably going to be proven wrong. 🤣 2w
GingerAntics @julesG yeah, I‘m sure it has happened already. I think that‘s part of what makes it funny. There is this part of your brain going “that would never happen in real life,” but then there is another part going “it probably already has.” 2w

This is one heck of an adventure. Troost is funny and maybe just a little crazy. I can‘t believe there is a drink that can get you high for TWO days! That‘s insane. I love that they decided to have their son in Fiji. I can‘t wait to read the next one.

This is such a funny moment I couldn‘t stop laughing about. It was actually about the horrible moment at 4am Fiji time they found out about the 9/11 attacks, but this was just before they realised the former druggie calling to tell them about it was obviously having an acid trip flash back.

Yes. I am fully convinced the world would be a MUCH better place if the American capital was in Key West and our motto was much more chill and cheery. Just a thought.
