A truly beautiful book. This is a stunningly wonderful work of scholarship. The photograph around which the book is centred is utterly heartbreaking, and a real human look into what is often forgotten amongst the unfathomable horror of the holocaust. A breathtaking look at what history scholarship can and should be.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics A wonderful discussion of how the enormity of the holocaust has left most of us disconnected from the truly human, individual experiences of genocide. Also a brilliant discussion of the role of family in society. #WenddyLower #TheRavine #audiobook

This book is so cute, and such a quick read. It‘s cheerful and inclusive. The illustrations are fun and engaging (and sometimes downright funny). This is such a great book for everyone. I firmly believe everyone knows a they, but might not be a safe person to know about it. This book is definitely a step toward that safety and inclusivity everyone needs.

I felt so seen reading this! I relate to so much of it, and even managed to find words for certain experiences I‘ve never been able to describe. From the discomfort of tights and dresses, and not liking them letting down our mothers to the let down and struggle of puberty. I know some people felt this book was disjointed and confusing. This is what the inside of my head is like, so this made total sense to me.

Definitely uplifting for the vast majority of us. The truth about the history of the SAT and ACT were shocking. I think there is still a certain privilege to his claims because not everyone has the ability to just move out change jobs. I think he does acknowledge some of this, but just barely.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Even early achievers apparently end up considering themselves late bloomers by middle age in a lot of cases. A slightly different spin on grit at the end, but makes valid points that there are limits to this. Mostly uplifting and a nice positive read. A good read especially for educators and parents, or anyone who cares about the children in their lives. #RichKarlgaard #LateBloomers #audiobook 5d

If all christians were like Pope Francis, they would not have to proselytise. If all people were like Pope Francis, we wouldn‘t have wars, abused children, hunger, or poverty. A better title for this book would be “Why I Needed to Find Reasons to Stay Alive.” There was one section of reasons, but they were from twitter so it was annoying. This isn‘t what I was hoping it would be when I started, but it was pretty good anyway. I think the title is just a bit of a misrepresentation. I would have chosen to read this on more of a high than a low, personally; but your mileage may vary.

It‘s so wonderful to hear her voice, especially toward the end when she talked about the greatest adventure there could possibly have was finding out what came after death. A great beginners guide. Not a huge fan of the outdated use of “codependent” or that healing comes from forgiveness, but it I do like the emphasis on letting go of shame. My only real question is how do people keep all of this information in their heads at once? This is definitely a work in progress for me. The box set is great. The electoral college has quite literally NEVER worked. This is a vitally important read. Every law maker should have to read this book, at every level of government. Every high school student should have to read this book. Every college student should have to read it again. The “American Experiment” failed when the first president was elected.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics For an afterthought the founding fathers agreed on quickly so they could just go home already, this shouldn‘t exist anymore. It‘s time we get rid of this thing and let people vote directly for the president or stop calling this country a democracy or a republic, because we are upholding neither with this system. #JesseWegman #LetThePeoplePickThePresident

GingerAntics @AnnCrystal the continental congress waited until the last minute to discuss how the president should be elected, so they were coming up with whatever “for now” just to go home. Then the very first election, it was corrupt in the exact way they worried it would be. Now, you‘d think they would have discussed after that, but wait, they did. They couldn‘t get the slave states to agree to one person one vote. 1w

Amiable Given that the current president is acting like a tyrant with the help of the other two branches of government, I‘d say that option 2 isn‘t the fail-safe that the founders had envisioned. 1w
ravenlee I don‘t think they ever imagined that so many people would be complicit in this kind of takeover. Surely Congress would stand up for their own power, if not for the people, right? Surely the Supreme Court would hold the others accountable, right? 1w

All this time I thought conservatives genuinely believed they were the majority. Turns out they are fully aware they are the minority and just believe that the minority should not be at the whim of the desires, concerns, and needs of the majority. So much for democracy. This even debunks the grand myth that the American constitution is this great document of democracy.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Everyone needs to read this, because what we think the problem is and what it actually is - how deep and far back it goes - is much different. If you have compassion for your fellow man, if you think the majority should rule, if you believe in democracy, you need to read this book. We are much further from democracy and much closer to the point of no return than you think. #NancyMacLean #DemocracyInChains #audiobook 1w

Karisa Just watched PBS‘ documentary “Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink.” I don‘t think they made any connections to the right, but would not be surprised if they are connected to the dismantling of small newspapers too. I know conservative companies like Sinclair have bought many local tv news stations. Wonder if this book draws connections? 🤬 https://www.pbs.org/video/stripped-for-parts-american-journalism-on-the-brink-dy... 2w
GingerAntics @Karisa she has mentioned that it‘s harder for the people to rise up because local news basically no longer exists. That investigative journalism is much less common that it once was. Maybe she will go into it further, but so far that‘s it. 2w
Karisa @GingerAntics Thanks! Looking at my conservative parents, they seem to never see the same things I see on the news. Seems like they are watching local (in central California) at least sometimes but mostly relying on Fox News type stuff. They used to read the local newspapers, but that‘s not really around anymore. It‘s like we are not living in the same reality. 😵‍💫 Feels strategic to me, but maybe it‘s a “chicken or the egg” type of thing 2w

GingerAntics @Karisa I was thinking the same thing until one day a few years ago now that I was at the gym while the evening news was on. There had been another school shooting. I can‘t believe so many of the terms used for female anatomy within science and medicine are related to shame and literally translate as such. I loved her addressing the fact that as recently as the 1960s, when researchers (some of them women) recorded the first ever time a human had seen the moment of conception or the first split after conception, not one of them described it as witnessing the creation of life.

TMI ALERT (keep scrolling if you don‘t want to know)

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie sometimes I really worry about people! 2w
ravenlee Wait, what? I‘m hating the whole perimenopause thing, but I an absolutely ready for the periods to go away - which is, of course, the one thing that isn‘t happening. 😖 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee right? I got an IUD for hormone imbalance and I hardly ever (like maybe once a year for like a day, but it‘s mostly like spotting) get a period. Let me tell you, the IUD is the most awesome invention ever!!! I don‘t care what people say. Come at me!!! 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee perimenopause is insane. I hate it. I feel like a kid on a really long road trip. Is it over yet?! Negative 5 stars. Do not recommend!!! 2w
Cuilin I think this is connected to youth obsession and maybe an idea of losing your “function” either way it‘s fucked up. 2w
GingerAntics @Cuilin oh, she definitely tied it to that. Some women have delayed menopause so they could focus on their careers and have children later. Others are literally doing it for youth. The first reason I get. It‘s similar to freezing your eggs to use later or use a surrogate later. Just to be young. Eh That‘s extreme. 2w
GingerAntics @Cuilin the procedure she was specifically talking about was having strips of your ovaries removed and preserved when you‘re young (like in your 20s) and then having those strips grafted back onto your ovaries later (like late 30s or early 40s) and apparently it can let you have children later. Just for the youth, dude that is just so extreme. 2w
ravenlee I had an IUD when my kid was young, and I was the opposite. I ended up having so many periods so close together and miserably long, I confused a GYN PA. She asked the dare of my last period and I almost cried, because I‘d had six or seven in three months and the last one (which was ongoing at the time) was already at 18 days. Yeah…I had that removed… 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee yeah, it‘s crazy how differently people react to things. I have a friend who had one put in about the same time I did, and she has spotted every day since. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Of course, who knows what IUD we all had and if we each had/have the one that‘s best for us. I don‘t know. It gets REALLY confusing. 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee it does confuse the hell out of time though. Every time they check my meds at the doctor‘s they always ask “are you still on the Kyleena?” And I‘m like, that‘s that? I probably have a generic, and they have to tell me no, it‘s my IUD. Like, I‘m pretty sure it‘s still in there. No one has gone looking for it lately, but I did get an X-ray of my hip and in the final report it said all these things about my hip joint… 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee and then the very last sentence: “IUD is in place.” Like, thanks? 🤣😂🤣 Good to know? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

I loved the transparency of who got money from where in relation to therapies and methods discussed in the book. I loved their ideas about how schools and parenting need to change for ADHD children (and probably all children if we‘re being honest).
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I was a little troubled by the support for ABA therapy, given the number of autistic, ADHD, and AuDHD people traumatised by it. I will never be buying or using anything made my J&J ever again after reading this. The final chapter‘s call to action is nothing new to anyone paying attention, but the rest of this book is absolutely mind blowing! Johnson & Johnson is a criminal enterprise. Acetaminophen IS factually dangerous, but not for the reasons that are in the headlines.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics “If acetaminophen were discovered today, it would never get approval” is all you need to know about this medication. The FDA is a waste of funding, then again, it‘s the drug companies‘ funding so that isn‘t saying much. This is a real eye opener. As a wise person told me when I started: be prepared to be angry. #GardinerHarris #NoMoreTears #audiobook #ReadByTheAuthor 2w
willaful I've been boycotting them for years, ever since I found out about them covering up the uterine cancer link. Monsters. 2w
ravenlee Ah! I saw this book on a library display ages ago and forgot to add it to my list. The biggest lie I tell myself is that I don‘t need to write it down, I‘ll remember it. Thank you! 2w

GingerAntics @willaful @TheBookHippie we haven‘t used anything branded as J&J in years, decades even. We always did generic. I‘m terrified of all the places they have their hands in the cookie jar. They are the parent company of TONS of other companies that make pharmaceuticals and household items. They are a shady bunch. 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee @Hooked_on_books turned me onto it. It‘s a great read, but it is infuriating! 2w
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics they are shady AF 2w
Hooked_on_books Sounds like your response was similar to mine! What a terrific, infuriating book. I‘m glad it opened my eyes. 2w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie Harris compared them to the mafia. It‘s rather appropriate! 2w
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I didn‘t know how far their tentacles were into so many other companies and how they‘ve shuffled stuff around to other of their companies to avoid taking responsibility. 2w

Hooked_on_books Buckle up, get ready to be pissed! 2w
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books only 1/4 of the way through and my mind is BLOWN!!! WTF J&J?! WTF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT!!! 2w
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I think we are having the entirely WRONG conversation about acetaminophen right now in America. There are real things to talk about, but of course RFK jr can‘t even find any of those. 2w

Hooked_on_books Right? This book is so shocking. It left me floored. 2w
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I thought I saw you down here on the floor with me. lol Man this is a trip!!! How did we ever trust these monsters?! Advertising at its finest really. 2w
Hooked_on_books Yup. I definitely have little to no trust for big companies now, between this and how I‘ve been treated by several of them over the past few years (I am looking squarely at FedEx at the moment). 2w

GingerAntics Straight up cried when she said this. It was almost like hearing her whisper from wherever she is “I‘m having a blast!” 2w

All. The. Stars.

I could not stop listening. Such a beautiful journey for a beautiful soul. This is a great discussion of religion, theology, gender, humanity, love. It has an interesting and lovely connection to “When God was a Woman.” Her description of her thought processes and her experiences really resonated with me and was refreshing to hear. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I learned things about the world and myself through this book. It was just such a lovely experience listening to this book. 1000% recommend. #PaulaStoneWilliams #AsAWoman #audiobook

GingerAntics @lil1inblue she‘s done like 3 or 4 TEDtalks! Highly recommend!!! As soon as I saw she had a book, I bought it. 2w

lil1inblue @GingerAntics Would you recommend the TEDtalks before or after reading the book? 2w
GingerAntics @lil1inblue hm… I don‘t think they take anything away from the book. She talks about giving them. Maybe before, but after wouldn‘t be bad either. 2w

I almost want to give this a pick. I don‘t know why. It has some problematic parts, some of which actually damage women (can we please burn “herstory” to the ground already! Actual women in the field are harmed by this term, thank you). She seems to have no clue what most people mean when referring to the “c-word” (she uses it when referring to the word crone). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics The use of a product with someone else‘s blood as an ingredient is not medically sound. Just. No. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
GingerAntics It‘s mostly a discussion of how women have been marginalised and harmed throughout history through the use of the words “witch,” “slut,” and “feminist.” Definitely a conversation starter, but there are some issues here that just make me so uncomfortable. I probably would not read this again, even for a buddy read or group read. #KristenJSollee #WitchesSlutsFeminists #audiobook #ReadByTheAuthor (edited) 2w
