Forget the Alamo: The True Story of the Myth That Made Texas | Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson, Jason Stanford

Pickpick

Valuable and important reading in modern society, especially if you were ever taught the catechism of Texas history.

I didn‘t grow up in Texas, so I dodged these lessons in school, but I did learn a lot about Texas history, including The Alamo, during an internship with a historical society.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics 2/ The trust I put in the people who clearly knew way more about Texas history than I did was, sadly, misplaced. This is a valuable lesson about how easy it is trust the wrong people, but digging for the truth is what is most important (and what distinguishes a scholar from a hobbyist). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2d
GingerAntics 3/ In all fairness, some of the people I worked with during my internship (mostly the few people who were actually being paid and scholars themselves) were not shy about the short comings of the leaders/heroes of Texas history. Those folks no doubt read this book, nodded a lot, and have been facepalming about the Collins collection since the reality of it came to light long after I interned there. 2d
GingerAntics 4/ The “heroes” of Texas aren‘t heroic at all, no matter how many statues of them exist, even if some of those statues literally reside in a room called “The Hall of Heroes.” The first time I ever heard anything about The Alamo came from a talk Phil Collins gave at a historical society in Texas. I get wanting to have a piece of your favourite moments in history, but seriously, Phil? Let‘s have some intellectual ethics, shall we? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2d
GingerAntics 5/ Things like this are why scholars always do further research and never depend on one person, or group of people, for all of their information. This book highlights exactly why one should never take a single story of history at face value. ALWAYS look for more. It is out there. You will find it. Also, do not trust pop stars for scholarly pursuits, ever. 2d
GingerAntics Also, the bloody Alamo plaza is actually a grave yard! So I do believe it‘s haunted… by the ghosts of indigenous people buried under the bleeding sidewalk! GET OFF THEIR GRAVES!!! Turns out, the state of TX knows about this but won‘t acknowledge it because of a state law forbidding anything being built over a cemetery! Their Alamo myth is more important than their own state laws! Go figure! 2d

I greatly enjoyed this book, but I am really struggling with how to review it. I am much closer to this madness that I wish I were, and I don‘t want to put myself or my future at risk by saying anything that could identify me to people who could literally destroy my career or any hope of ever having one… but it is hard to not include those things, because the lies told about The Alamo are truly disturbing and disgusting.

GingerAntics As a historian, this is not what I stand for. This is not why I got into the field. This is the 21st century, and we MUST do better. 2d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m trying to channel your courage at the moment. I don‘t think I‘m a reincarnation of any brave person in history, but I am me in this really messed up part of history and I can be brave on my own. OH MY GOD PHIL COLLINS IS A TRULY MESSED UP INDIVIDUAL!!! 2d
RamsFan1963 I read this a couple of years ago, and I remember how disgusted I was by how far the "history" taught to me and others in school was from reality. Texas schools might as well show the movie The Alamo, with John Wayne, and call it a documentary. 2d

GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 I didn‘t move to Texas until the tail end of 8th grade, so I totally missed this in school, but I got a HEAVY dose of it while interning with a historical society in Texas, so yeah. The story that is told is SO very different from reality. Case in point… the first “battle”/“victory” was really more of a discussion. “Give it back.” “No.” “Okay, bye.” This is now sold as a battle and a victory? It‘s barely even a conversation. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 2d
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 plus, there is the whole, Phil Collins addition to this. The dude thinks he‘s is a reincarnated hero of the Alamo. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I just cannot even. And his SHADY AF collection. 😵‍💫 I just… WOW!!! 2d
RamsFan1963 @GingerAntics I never cared for Phil Collins to start with, but his inclusion to this story is so bizarre. However it's a tried an true conservative mantra, especially in these MAGA days, if you repeat a lie often enough, and loud enough, it becomes the truth. 2d
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics There are days… 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 2d
TheBookHippie @RamsFan1963 @GingerAntics he‘s always seemed CREEPY to me and just ICK. Messed up is right. So bizarro world. 2d
IriDas Wait, Phil Collins the singer? 2d
GingerAntics @IriDas yes indeed, THAT Phil Collins! 2d
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 it always seems weird to me that an English guy gave a crap about the Alamo… just sure why not. 2d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie first psychic told him he was the reincarnation of a guy who left before the fall of the Alamo to bring back help, so he survived. Then later he decided he was the reincarnation of Davy Crockett. No lie. A photo comparison of him vs a painting of Jim Bowie MySA San Antonio News saying Phil is the reincarnation of Jim! https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/Phil-Collins-is-a-reincarnated-A... 2d
IriDas What?!?!? Just when I thought things could not get weirder in this world. That is nuts. I suppose his money keeps him out of Arkham. ;) 2d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie and apparently the guy he was originally told he was the reincarnation of was the first Alamo artefact he ever got, so he felt like it made sense that he got his own receipt for selling his own saddle back. Because that makes so much sense. No idea why he‘s decided he‘s Crockett now. 💁🏼‍♀️ 2d
GingerAntics @IriDas he‘s still alive… it‘s not too late to send him, still. The reincarnation thing now, how almost his entire collection has turned out to be “I want it to be this, so I guess it is!” It might be time to 5150 him! 2d
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics lord 🤦🏻‍♀️😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 2d

This is true, and yet the country is currently doubling down on these issues.

Conservatives, especially Texas conservatives, are so worried about how white children feel about their ancestors being slave owners and slave owning being framed as bad in history class. They are never worried about how other children feel while sitting in history class or how their white classmates treat them because of what is taught in those classes.

This is way more accurate than anything you‘d learn in a Texas history classroom.

IriDas Or any classroom in the US. I was well into adulthood before I learned the truth. Even my children never learned the truth in school. 2d

Texans have always believed themselves to be so much better than reality shows them. This is still, unfortunately, largely true. What a shock, they‘re anti-Catholic too.

I agree with John Steinbeck. It‘s amazing how true this is, and how it continues to be true. If anything, people are doubling down on this these days.
