Pickpick

(1987) The first ST:TNG tie-in novel is a novelization of the pilot episode. It's been a long long time since I watched "Encounter at Farpoint," and this seemed to match my hazy memory pretty well, except that the tone of the ending was quite different. Still, even with the difference it felt more like an episode of the show than like a pastiche, so Gerrold gets a passing grade from me.

RamsFan1963 It always amazes me how big a fan I became of ST:NG considering how much I detested the first season. Except for Data, I didn't care for any of the characters. 3mo
swynn @RamsFan1963 I remember being very underimpressed by the first season also, and watched very few episodes. It wasn't until I think the fourth season that I got into it, when a group of friends in college started having watch parties. At first I wasn't sure whether the show was getting better or I just enjoyed the company. From here I can see it was a generous helping of both 3mo

RamsFan1963 @swynn Looking back on it, ST:NG Season One did have some quality episodes. The Big Goodbye, Datalore (introducing Data's evil twin brother Lore), Heart of Glory and Conspiracy were all entertaining, but they were surrounded by utter crap like Code of Honor (the worse ST episode I've ever seen), Justice (cringy Wesley Crusher episode), and We'll Always Have Paris 3mo
swynn @RamsFan1963 After reading this, I started a re-watch of the first season episodes, and still think they're mostly weak, even knowing -- heck *especially* knowing some of the series' strengths to come. And if my goodness yes, Code of Honor made my jaw drop early and left it gaping. I hope I can forget it again but I'm not optimistic 3mo

A much better installment to the TNG book series. I enjoyed the focus on Geordi and Data, especially the use of Geordi‘s visor! The moral questions brought up throughout the story were intriguing and made me think of a sci fi classic I read earlier this year, Way Station by Simak. But in this story, the threat of an alien conglomerate enforcing a handicap on a planets ability to govern itself and reach for the stars has become reality.

There‘s a lot going on and also not much happens… Many of the characters (especially these three doofuses) are very different than their tv counterparts. Data shows too much emotion, I especially hated the moments where he seemingly got his feelings hurt. I LOATHED the part where Carey says he actually pouts like a child. Riker‘s an unprofessional lunatic. Geordi was just a tad bit too insubordinate. (Although I must say, his ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm protectiveness over Data definitely fed my inner Data/Geordi ship demon.) 😅

The plot was meh. I still don‘t understand how this entity swooped through Earth in the 1990‘s, plucked one ship out of the ocean, then apparently left our solar system and didn‘t come into human contact again until the Enterprise stumbled across it randomly out in the galaxy… 🤷‍♀️

I don‘t know that I can blame Carey for not having a better grasp on the characters ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm mannerisms. The show premiered in late September ‘87 and this novel was published in July ‘88. She had to have been writing it either before it premiered or just as it was airing. So I don‘t know how much, if any, of the actors depictions she was able to see before writing this. Wesley especially seems like she wrote a completely different person in the role, down to his physical looks.

Roary47 Eeee I think I‘ve read this one a long time ago. 🤩 5mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Roary47 Lol, it‘s almost as old as I am. 😅 Have you read any other Star Trek books? I‘m working my way through the TNG series. ❤️ 5mo
Roary47 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yes, I‘ve read a few. I need to get back into reading them. They seem to be the only Sci-fi I can actually get into. 😅 5mo

A novelization of the first TNG episode. There are some obvious differences that they changed later during filming of the show. Riker goes by Bill in this, but Will in the show. Data‘s origin is different. Things happen in a different order and I definitely prefer the tv version of that better. But what I like better in the book are the thoughts of the characters. A fun look into how they think/perceive each other.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive, and ever growing, TBR shelves. Some are old and some are new, some were gifts and some I don't remember why I bought them.
Day 32 (yes I know I'm late, and this is the second Worf cover)

I think this book is mostly pretty bad, but the deliciousness of Picard telling Q that passionate hate usually also indicates passionate love - my dude, are you hearing yourself? Talking to you most *ahem* hated guy??

khooliha Of course, this book doesn't know that queerness is real, so it misses the tasty treat too. 13mo

I just had to share this photo after I saw the “sock monkey“ theme for the #MarchMadnessReadathon #DailyChallenge.

Years ago, I knitted a traditional grey and white monkey for my daughter. She loved it so much that I decided to adapt the pattern to make another, based on her favourite Star Trek character, Data.

Reading this as a buddy read with my son. He‘s practicing reading aloud and improving his English so he reads in Braille and I in print. We just randomly jumped in at book 8 because that‘s what was available in Braille. I think I might actually like the story, we‘ll see, it‘s not my usual genre!
