Mehso-so

3 ⭐️s
There‘s a lot going on and also not much happens… Many of the characters (especially these three doofuses) are very different than their tv counterparts. Data shows too much emotion, I especially hated the moments where he seemingly got his feelings hurt. I LOATHED the part where Carey says he actually pouts like a child. Riker‘s an unprofessional lunatic. Geordi was just a tad bit too insubordinate. (Although I must say, his ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm protectiveness over Data definitely fed my inner Data/Geordi ship demon.) 😅

The plot was meh. I still don‘t understand how this entity swooped through Earth in the 1990‘s, plucked one ship out of the ocean, then apparently left our solar system and didn‘t come into human contact again until the Enterprise stumbled across it randomly out in the galaxy… 🤷‍♀️

I don‘t know that I can blame Carey for not having a better grasp on the characters ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm mannerisms. The show premiered in late September ‘87 and this novel was published in July ‘88. She had to have been writing it either before it premiered or just as it was airing. So I don‘t know how much, if any, of the actors depictions she was able to see before writing this. Wesley especially seems like she wrote a completely different person in the role, down to his physical looks.

Book 2 of #BookTrek2024

Roary47 Eeee I think I‘ve read this one a long time ago. 🤩 3mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Roary47 Lol, it‘s almost as old as I am. 😅 Have you read any other Star Trek books? I‘m working my way through the TNG series. ❤️ 3mo
Roary47 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yes, I‘ve read a few. I need to get back into reading them. They seem to be the only Sci-fi I can actually get into. 😅 3mo

A book that dares to ask: what is season 1 of TNG was more miserable? Not the author's fault, but these chatacters mostly hate being here and interacting with each other and then their own Doomsday Machine shows up with the added wrinkle of debating euthanasia. One in the grand tradition of Ignoring What Troi Says. All this AND sensory deprivation?

Plus, the ghosts show up, what, twice, and don't have an impact beyond stressing Troi out?! Boooooo

khooliha Also, pretty sure that's supposed to be the Enterprise on the cover and I don't know if there's ever been a less inspiring ship doodle 4y

Hold on, Riker and Troi have only known each other 5 years?!?!

khooliha (But seriously, this sort of thing rankles my aroace self CONSTANTLY. Where does our heternormative society get off om canoninzing 5 years romantic relationships while downplaying platonic bonds that are decades old??) 4y

It is ASTONISHING how little has happened in 160+ pages.

I was going to write a post about how almost everyone loathes one another in this book and then I kept reading and now Riker is physically menacing Data for using slang. This sucks!

khooliha The slang thing is a goofy, very slight little subplot that is wildly out of place amongst all the yelling at the people who work under you and intense self-loathing from almost everyone. 4y

So far mostly everyone hates each other and being on the Enterprise! My fav has to be Picard being mean to Wes and then being shocked when this child's feelings are hurt.

khooliha Save your intolerant glances, you supposedly diplomatic master! 4y

Well, this book has a real grip on season 1 Picard's characterization, which is to say he's a dick within 2 pages of appearing. Great!!!

#fortheloveoffonts These Star Trek books are rarely any good, but I'm a Trekkie so I read them religiously. Plus, the fonts are so Delta Quadrant.

Anitta @Krisjericho hey, I was in love with Riker as a teen so this book was cherished :) 8y
SaraFair @Anitta -would love to get into these. However there are about a million of them at my used bookstore. Where should I start? 8y
Anitta @SaraFair sorry for such a late reply, I missed your comment. Here's something that might either help you or throw you in despair :) https://goo.gl/tEVXkj 8y
SaraFair @Anitta -thanks so much! How do I print that out? Lol. My boys are going to love it too. 8y
SaraFair @anitta- I had the same issues with Star Wars novels but had a good time with them. Now I have no motivation there since they have thrown out the whole cannon and Princess Leia has died. 8y
Anitta @SaraFair I never read them. Can you recommend on? 8y
SaraFair @Anitta - sorry-just saw this! My favorite so far has been the Thrawn trilogy. They are set after the first six movies but before the current movies and with a different storyline for our main characters. I got an annotated version of the first book (noted below) and really got into it. The endings of all 3 are great. 8y
