The River We Remember: A Novel | William Kent Krueger

Pickpick

From the moment Sheriff Brody Dern sees the body of Jimmy Quinn, he knows something isn‘t right. Suicide, murder, accident—everyone has a different theory but if it was murder, everyone knows who did it. Or thinks they do… Unraveling the truth of that night will expose secrets, reveal simmering prejudices, & pull in the innocent & not so innocent. Another wonderful story with a fantastic setting & wonderful characters. Krueger never disappoints.

Started this today and I just have to say, Krueger always comes with the hook—immediately—that makes the book impossible to put down. Anyway, yeah, it‘s off to a great start.

I didn‘t really need to start another book series, especially one that‘s growing and already has numerous installments. Anyway, here I am starting the Cork O‘Connor series with Iron Lake. I was a bit worried for the first half of the book, thinking it was just okay. Disappointingly, I felt underwhelmed by the story. I genuinely enjoyed it by the time I finished reading it, though.

The book begins on Decoration Day in the late 1950s, and the town of Jewel, Minnesota is celebrating. On the banks of the Alabaster River, a body is discovered. The murder reopens old wounds of the townspeople. 4.5⭐️

I am absolutely heart broken. Three children are having the WORST day of their lives today, for WHAT? Two children are orphans. Is this really what people voted for? THIS. IS. NOT. OKAY. 68 other people and organisations are on a hit list by this gunman.
NO. KINGS.
End the madness.

IriDas Having grown up in the alt-right, I can assure you, this is exactly what they voted for. When 9/11 happened all my family said was “why didn‘t they fly some planes into the UN buildings.” I mean, these people don‘t even care when it happens to a classroom full of children. 4w

Deblovestoread It‘s devastating. 💔 4w
GingerAntics @IriDas you know, nothing should surprise me with the right. They really don‘t care when it‘s a classroom full of children. The only thoughts they have are that they‘re going to have to talk about gun control again, and their prayers are that they won‘t have to. 🙄 Why would they care about this. You‘re right. The 9/11 thing is creepy as hell. Please tell me you have gotten as far away from those nut jobs as possible. 4w

TheBookHippie It‘s so so sad. It did not have to be like this. I saw this pure hatred yesterday in our counter protestors. It‘s just astounding. 4w
IriDas @GingerAntics Yes, I cut them off years ago. But now most of them are dead (old age). It was such a sad shock when I heard their voices coming out of Trump‘s mouth back in 2016. Every interview with one of them is like a flashback to my childhood. Sometimes I laugh because they all are saying the same exact things my family and neighbors were saying back in the 70s. The Right truly has no new ideas. 4w
GingerAntics @IriDas not surprising! They‘ve been saying the same old tired bs for ages! 3w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie the hate is just astounding. It‘s not surprising, because they‘re very honest about their hate (possibly the only thing the ARE honest about), but the lengths they will go to, the total lack of limits or humanity in their hate is always jolting when they are so open about that. 3w

I found this for $8 at Indigo years ago and had zero expectations. The cover was eerie and drew me in. Maltman paints an emotional image of small town rural life, struck by tragedy. A father trying to understand his son‘s actions. A pastor‘s wife trying to find her place. A town guided by traditions and keeping secrets. Mixing in folklore and Norse Mythology, Maltman creates a tense story interwoven with mystery and beauty.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this one. The storyline flowed like the river in its title. I would describe this as a quiet, slower moving book- delightful for summer reading.

I‘m trying something new by making a summer reads pile! So these are my picks for June and July. Will this work out? Probably not… but these are the books that I‘ve been itching to pick up and for some reason never do. So once I finish my current read, I‘ll be picking away at this!

First up is the tagged book: Little Wolves
