6. The conclusion of Villette is famously ambiguous (it was made purposefully so by Brontë). Do you find it a happy ending? A sad one? ~from Penguin Random House Reader's Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

4. Virginia Woolf felt that Villette was Brontë‘s “finest novel,” and speaking about Brontë, wrote that “All her force, and it is the more tremendous for being constricted, goes into the assertion, ‘I love,‘ ‘I hate,‘ ‘I suffer.‘ ” What do you think Woolf means? Do you find this observation interesting, appealing, or moving? ~from Penguin Random House Reader's Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

3. Writing to her publisher, Charlotte Brontë had this to say about Villette‘s protagonist: “I consider that [Lucy Snowe] is both morbid and weak at times; her character sets up no pretensions to unmixed strength, and anybody living her life would necessarily become morbid.” What do you think of this appraisal? Do her “unheroic” qualities make her more sympathetic or less? ~from Penguin Random House reader's guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Cuilin I think unmixed strength is appropriate. To be so young and alone during those times must‘ve been incredibly lonely and confusing and you may test the world by behaving in different ways. 6h

2. Discuss the character of Lucy Snowe. Do you find her to be an admirable heroine? What qualities do you like in her, or dislike? How do you think you would behave in her circumstances? ~from Penguin Random House Reader's Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Cuilin I like her. I really felt for her during the times of loneliness, waiting on letters from those who barely cared. (edited) 6h

1. Villette is considered Charlotte Bronte's most autobiographical novel. It's said that Lucy Snowe has some of Bronte's characteristics, and Monsieur Paul resembles Monsieur Heger, who one can argue Charlotte Bronte was fascinated by (or perhaps in love with). A link to an article about the Bronte sisters in Brussels is in the comments (hopefully it is not behind a paywall).

What did you think about the novel? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

CatLass007 I won‘t be participating this month. I would like to be kept on the tag list because I‘d very much like to know what everyone else thinks. I bailed on this book years ago and have been hesitant to pick up anything else by Margaret Atwood. I know that my opinion is in the minority and that many people believe it‘s a great work of literature. Enjoy or at least be challenged. Welcome to Litsy where it‘s OK to have different opinions. Jadams89 @CatLass007 no problem! I‘m not planning to remove anyone from the tag list anytime soon (unless they request it, of course). Every book/author isn‘t for everyone - and that‘s ok! 10h
CatLass007 Yes! 9h
CatLass007 I was looking at my TBR for March and I discovered I‘d written myself a note to give a try to another Atwood book and I already had chosen Hag-Seed. So I‘m sort of participating. (edited) 8h
Scochrane26 I love this book! I discovered it in grad school & have read several times. 8h
Melismatic Like Parable, I‘ve already read this so I‘m aiming to read its sequel that‘s been sitting on my shelf since it came out. 💖 6h
peanutnine I read this one a couple times in college and I don't think I'm in the headspace to reread right now due to the state of the world, but I'll check out the discussion at the end of the month 🙂 5h

This month, we turn our attention to the essential creatures that sustain life on earth. I hope there is lots to learn in this book. Invertebrates, insects, creepy-crawlies, whatever you call them, are not my strong suit. I'm looking forward to getting to know them and their world better. 🐜🪳🐞🦟🦗

All welcome to join in. Please let me know if you wish to be added/removed from the taglist.
