The Whole Town's Talking
The Whole Town's Talking | Fannie Flagg
56 posts | 58 read | 60 to read
From the beloved author of "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" comes another unforgettable, laugh-out-loud, and moving novel about what it means to be truly alive. Elmwood Springs, Missouri, is a small town like any other, but something strange is happening out at the cemetery. Still Meadows, as it s called, is anything but still. Funny and profound, this novel in the tradition of Flagg s "Can t Wait to Get to Heaven" and Thornton Wilder s "Our Town" deals with universal themes of heaven and earth and everything in between, as Flagg tells a surprising story of life, afterlife, and the mysterious goings-on of ordinary people."

Just finished my favorite book in Fannie Flagg‘s Elmwood Springs series. 🙌🏻 This prequel covers everything from the town‘s history to sweet stories of its founders & all its residents. A true slice of small town life filled with nostalgia, juicy gossip and an intriguing spin on the afterlife.
Fannie is a master at creating characters that befriend us for life. I‘m gonna miss my Elmwood Springs family.😢They always have your back no matter what.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Are her books or writing style similar to Anne Tyler's? I know she's one of your fav authors :) 5y

3.75/5 ⭐️ for being light hearted and occasionally funny. I needed something light, and this worked.

Reminiscent of a Garrison Keillor tale, this is the story of a town founded by Swedish immigrants. The town grows over the decades, and its residents are buried in the town cemetery. Having lived in small towns most of my life, the growth and decline of a small town sounds familiar, as does the genuine goodness of most of the characters.

Don‘t waste your time. Bad “philosophy “ mixed with grumpy-old-Lady view of the world. Add in a thin plot, little development and simplistic resolutions to difficult problems. Total pan for me.

Fannie Flagg is not helping. I‘d bail on this except I kind of want to know how she will account for people disappearing from the cemetery.

I thought the story overall was so-so. The timeline was crazy long. The chapters were so short, sometimes not even a full page. There were some characters that were just absolute gold though. Then after I finished the book and looked at the cover, every little bit of it ties into the book. #18 #2019

The book started out delightful and charming, typical of Flagg, with (mostly) likeable characters with lots of appeal and just the right amount of quirkiness, but then it got silly... I like the premise of the book, the birth of a town in the 1800s right through to 2021, but I could have done without the subplot in the cemetery—this was corny and unnecessary.

All-in-all, a fun read.

This was a fun & very light read, a nice distraction. Fannie Flagg is a gifted storyteller. Here, she brings a multi-generational cast of quirky small-town characters to life through extremely brief vignettes as scenes from their interconnected (sometimes entangled) lives. It felt a bit contrived and a little too preachy for my taste, but it was just the right light read for the moment.

Suet624 Well at least you can check it off your list. 😁 7y

.... In which Fannie Flagg explores Eastern spiritual beliefs in the afterlife!! Intriguing. As always, this book by Ms. Flagg was as sweet and satisfying as a bowl of peach ice cream. Read it for simple pleasure, with a side of metaphysical exploration, and enjoy!

A light, cozy, slice of life read without much romance and with zero gore or mystery. Flagg picks up aspects of Eastern spiritual practices of ancestor worship & reincarnation and gives it a Westernized twist. A good vacay or beach read unless you have difficulty with non-Christian spiritual viewpoints.

Finished this audiobook on my drive & I'm still going "what" at the ending. It is the story of a small Midwestern town & its inhabitants from the very beginning of the town to the present. You get to know its inhabitants & when they die they go to the cemetery & continue on talking, gossiping, & getting the latest news from the visitors to the cemetery & the cemetery's newest arrivals. It was ok but.... I enjoyed other books by Fannie Flagg more.

Not really sure if I was in the best mood to be reading this book, but I found myself unable to really connect to the characters because we only saw so little of each one.

Maybe I'm just too cranky these days but I found myself pretty exasperated with a lot of the book. I could imagine it being very fun if I was in a happier headspace. So maybe this review is misplaced. Take it for what it's worth.

quote
KatG

"Elner always sang to her chickens. She believed it made them lay bigger eggs. And besides, she liked to sing. Unfortunately, she sometimes didn't know the words and was always just a hair off-key, but the chickens didn't seem to mind."

I wanted something light and comforting, and this book fit the bill.

I loved this so much. I'm home sick so it may just have been the perfect read. This book was like a hug; soft, warm, and comfortable. She does such a great job of weaving a tale that extends from the 1890s to 2021. Tells of a new town in Missouri, a mail order bride, members of the community and on to their descendants. And the thing? What if it's true?! That would be cool I think! Don't you. Caught me off guard at first, but came to love it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ book. It was good, but with some flaws. The book imagined what happens after we die and tells the story of a town and its people over a hundred years. It's funny and interesting, but would have been better with a tighter focus and not covering such a long span of time.
