Republic of Thieves
Republic of Thieves | Scott Lynch
"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER A bright new voice in the fantasy genre (George R. R. Martin), acclaimed author Scott Lynch continues to astound and entertain with his thrillingly inventive, wickedly funny, suspense-filled adventures featuring con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. And "The Republic of Thieves" is his most captivating novel yet. With what should have been the greatest heist of their career gone spectacularly sour, Locke and his trusted partner, Jean, have barely escaped with their lives. Or at least Jean has. But Locke is slowly succumbing to a deadly poison that no alchemist or physiker can cure. Yet just as the end is near, a mysterious Bondsmage offers Locke an opportunity that will either save him or finish him off once and for all. Magi political elections are imminent, and the factions are in need of a pawn. If Locke agrees to play the role, sorcery will be used to purge the venom from his body though the process will be so excruciating he may well wish for death. Locke is opposed, but two factors cause his will to crumble: Jean s imploring and the Bondsmage s mention of a woman from Locke s past: Sabetha. She is the love of his life, his equal in skill and wit, and now, his greatest rival. Locke was smitten with Sabetha from his first glimpse of her as a young fellow orphan and thief-in-training. But after a tumultuous courtship, Sabetha broke away. Now they will reunite in yet another clash of wills. For faced with his one and only match in both love and trickery, Locke must choose whether to fight Sabetha or to woo her. It is a decision on which both their lives may depend. PRAISE FOR SCOTT LYNCH "The Republic of Thieves" "" Fast paced, fun, and impossible to put down . . . Locke and company remain among the most engaging protagonists in fantasy. "Publishers Weekly" (starred review) "The Republic of Thieves" has all the colorful action, witty repartee, and devious scheming that fans of the series have come to expect. "Wired" A fantasy world unique among its peers . . . If you re looking for a great new fantasy series this is one you won t want to miss. . . . In a word: AWESOME! "SF Revu" "Red Seas Under Red Skies" Lynch hasn t merely imagined a far-off world, he s created it, put it all down on paper the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up. "Booklist" (starred review)"" "Red Seas Under Red Skies" firmly proves that Scott Lynch isn t a one-hit wonder. . . . It ll only be a matter of time before Scott Lynch is mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Steven Erikson. "Fantasy Book Critic" Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization. "Locus" "The Lies of Locke Lamora" "" Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think "The Lies of Locke Lamora" is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven t read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again. Bailed for now. I keep it on my phone, though. Because just because I don't feel it right now, I might later? Maybe I'm just too old for this kind of book? The reviews are all really good, but I couldn't make it past the Interlude. I felt no interested to hearing more about Locke and his heart ache for Becky (?)...

mabell It turned out very cool! Did you work straight across each line? Or do all of a color and move on to the next color? 4y
CrowCAH @mabell I worked in blocks of rows, like 6-8 rows. The canvas is sticky, so I didn‘t want it to dry out before I got to subsequent areas, thus I left what I wasn‘t working on covered. 4y

This was much more like the first installment than the second and I loved it more because of that fact. I also love that we get to actually see and learn more about Sabetha. It was great to see the whole gang again as there are two timelines in the book one before the events of the first book and one in the “current“ time. I can see why everyone is impatiently waiting for the next one.

Third book in the Gentleman Bastards series. Once again it‘s 2 stories in one intertwining the gang‘s present adventure with a past adventure. This time Sabetha joins the story. Her character needs a little more depth which I hope will be provided by Lynch in book 4. Still a fun read with the most creative swearing ever committed to paper. 🤣 4⭐️s

This series is phenomenal! Why did I wait so long to read book 3? I guess maybe because I knew the next book wasn‘t released yet...

The craftiness and cunning of these characters floors me every time! The political intrigue is genius! Plus the stories are really fun, and I love that the Gentlemen Bastards have their own unnamed god of thieves.

I loved seeing Sabetha and Locke‘s backstory. So good! Such tension!

@Mitch have you read these?

I liked this book. But honestly, it‘s was just north of a meh for me. The ending is probably what saved it from that fate because I‘m 550 pages there wasn‘t a lot that I found exciting or compelling. The romance angle did absolutely nothing for me and the political side wasn‘t executed as well as it has been in other books. Right now I‘m debating on whether or not I‘ll continue with this series. It joins the Kingkiller Chronicles on that list.

TrishB I think I read the next one, then didn‘t bother any further. 7y

The latest in the Gentlemen Bastards series, where fantasy meets crime caper. Lynch really tells two stories here, and the continual back and forth slows the narrative down a bit. It's also considerably darker than the previous two as the creepy Bondsmagi play a greater role. Still great fun though.

Dragon I've read the first two but saving this one for just the right time 😀 8y
Vansa Is this as good as the first two ? I read the reviews and seemed mixed. 8y
Minervasbutler @Vansa I enjoyed Vol 2 the most cos it's where the Locke-Jean friendship gets played out best. This one is good, but it's essentially two stories, one 10 years earlier than the second, which makes it a bit slow moving imo 8y

Despite the fact that the character of Sabetha was quite disappointing, and Jean's role was reduced, Lynch once again delivered in impeccable plot, worldbuilding and lead-up to the next book. What I love about his characters is that no matter what awesome skills they possess they are still very much fallible. And in my opinion all three books show this. Also we find out some spine-tingling facts about Karthain and the Magi.

Finished this thrilling fantasy over #booksandcoffee this morning. Lynch crafted compelling characters in the Gentleman Bastards, and the latest entry does NOT disappoint. Magic, fisticuffs, and skulduggery bind Locke and Jean vs. Sabetha in a contest to rig the Karthain elections. Every page crackles with wit and double-cross as the Bastards vie to best each other and the powers that would use them as pawns. This book = SO much fun 👏👏👏
