Another great novel that should be adapted for a movie, unless that happened already🤷🏽‍♀️It has suspense, action, intrigue, and Titus Crown is an interesting character dealing with personal things, prejudice and his job as the first black sheriff in Charon County, Virginia. I don‘t know what to think about that ending but I know it will be a perfect one in a movie. 4/4.5⭐️Amazing audiobook.

Cosby‘s story of the South is a fast-paced police chase that never settles for being just a mystery. It‘s a morality play about living with the demons and scars of a complicated history that has yet to be reckoned with. The third-person narrator (maybe Charon County itself) never allows it to be simple. A fantastic, chilling read.

“Blood and tears. Violence and mayhem. Love and hate. These were the rocks upon which the South was built.”

A perfect plane book. The first black sheriff in a small Virginia town discovers a gruesome serial killer. The ensuing deaths are not dwelt upon and there's not too much plodding details, but some social commentary, and its just suspenseful enough, without making one''s heart race.

A serial killer thriller that reminded me of a Criminal Minds episode, except that it is layered with the story of Titus, former FBI agent turned sheriff of his SE Virginia county. Racism still runs rampant there, complicating the lives of its citizens and its first Black sheriff. Except for a little bit of overdone prose at the beginning, I was totally wrapped up in this twisty, turny thriller with its nuanced MC and stayed up late to finish!

I read this mystery earlier this month and really enjoyed it! It was a smart police procedural that didn‘t dwell heavily on the violent bits but provided enough detail to convey how tragic and horrible the crimes were. It kept me guessing right to the end! Adam Lazarre-White excelled as the audiobook narrator. Glad I read this for June‘s #AuthorAMonth pick! 5/5⭐️

This was my first SACosby book! When I was reading, I was fully engrossed in the story, forgetting where and when I was physically. This is exactly what I love in a book. I have one major plot question I will hide in the comments! #authoramonth @Soubhiville

Karisimo Why didn‘t Titus search for Gabriel once the neighbor revealed there was a biracial boy that had been abused? Seemed like he just accepted that the boy disappeared and didn‘t pursue the lead even though he suspects him as the murderer? Or did I miss something? 3mo

I did it! I got through an SA Cosby book! I was nervous to pick them up because I heard how dark and gruesome the books are. This one was pretty dark but luckily most was off the page. A serial killer and the hunt to find them before they kill again. I‘ll need light stuff for a while before I can pick up any other dark books.

S. A. Crosby is new to me. I read him thanks to #AuthorAMonth and so glad I did. This is an extremely tense thriller with great characters. I adore Titus Crown. The racial tensions are palpable throughout the story.
Trigger warnings - this has graphic detail of child abuse, torture and murder.

Such #tragedy needs a trigger warning about the incredibly horrific details of physical abuse and murder of young black people. But, it is so deserving of accolades for Cosby's abilities to create an engaging, suspenseful story and remind readers of racial injustice and hate that continues to plague us. What a great read! Tautly plotted and very well written.

A young black man kills a white school teacher in the aptly named Charon County, VA. As he leaves the scene he is killed by the police. As Sheriff Titus Crowne investigates, terrible evil acts are revealed and they must hunt a serial killer. All in the midst of racial provocation by Confederate apologists.

I loved Titus‘s final redemptive act at this end of this highly recommended novel.

This was the first book I‘ve read of S.A. Cosby. I found the novel kept me turning the pages. It had some good characters and some not so great. Racism is very much alive in many places. I often hope I will awaken and find it was just a nightmare. It will always break my heart. I gave this book a 4.25/5.

What an excellent read this was. While the story is thrilling and keeps the reader turning the pages, the heart of the story is its depiction of small town rural America, the struggles of Sheriff Titus Crowne (conflicted, full of quiet anger), and the interactions (volatile, tense) among the white and Black residents. Crosby tackles issues of racism, white supremacy, religious fundamentalism, and violence skilfully.

A significant win for All The Sinners Bleed in today‘s #LitsyToB24 bracket - by 17 votes to 4, meaning Sinners had the most votes of any book in our first round. Are you surprised by this outcome?

We put these books together due to the element of mystery in them, and also the question of whether crimes had been committed. Did you feel that either book was a typical mystery or crime novel?

We‘d love to hear your thoughts on both books!

Ruthiella Not surprised at all. ATSB was a much more traditionally structured mystery novel and was paced and plotted accordingly. For me it was a more satisfying read. I did like how HF shown a light on the differently abled and prejudices and associations can be unfairly made. 6mo
See All 26 Comments
MicheleinPhilly I‘m about 50% through Happiness Falls now and am finding it to be a definite case of the sophomore slump. I haven‘t read a Cosby yet that I haven‘t rated 5 stars. 6mo
Deblovestoread I would have been surprised if the vote were the other way around. Cosby‘s books are so tight they snap along. HF took more work to get through. 6mo
Chelsea.Poole I am a fan of both of these novels. Great pairing with the theme, but so hard for me to choose. I can‘t even remember which I voted for. I still think of Happiness Falls — of the idea that happiness can come from expecting the worst and avoiding that outcome. Happiness “at rest” is fine but then can be “turned up” when something bad *doesn‘t* happen. 6mo
Bookwormjillk Loved ATSB but kind of kicking myself for using my zombie vote on it now that I see how popular it is 🤣 6mo
BarbaraBB I was surprised about how much I liked Happiness Falls. I voted for ATSB because Cosby is such a good writer. I don‘t remember much about the book itself. I read it last summer! 6mo
AmyG I loved ATSB…fast paced, myster thriller, serial killer! But HF…I liked the premise but got bogged down by the daughter. I didn‘t hate it but I didn‘t love it. 6mo
Megabooks @AmyG 💯💯💯 agree with you!! 6mo
fredthemoose Dark, violent murder mysteries are not usually my thing, but Cosby writes such compelling MCs that I‘ve lived all of his books I‘ve read. I appreciated that HF made me think about disability in new ways, and it ended up fine, but like @AmyG I struggled with the daughter/narrator, especially at the beginning and the end. 6mo
squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole - you were one of the four Littens who voted for Happiness Falls. 😃 6mo
squirrelbrain That‘s the beauty of doing the Zombie vote first @Bookwormjillk - we have no idea what‘s going to be the favourite of everyone else! One of my zombie votes was also a waste as it got through easily. 🤷‍♀️ 6mo
squirrelbrain @AmyG @Megabooks @fredthemoose - I too struggled with the daughter, particularly her extensive ‘footnotes‘ which were rather confusing on audio. 6mo
Hooked_on_books I really liked both of these books, so this was a hard choice for me. I snatch up each new Cosby book as it comes, but found this one less memorable than his previous two. And I really liked Kim‘s book, which I found much more memorable. I think I ultimately voted for Cosby, but I would have been happy with a verdict either way on this one. 6mo
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain thanks for the reminder! 😆 I really could go either way with this one but I‘m glad I voted for the one that stands out more to me after awhile! And I agree with @Hooked_on_books I found this one of Cosby‘s less memorable than another of his — Razorblade Tears. (edited) 6mo
squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole @Hooked_on_books - I haven‘t read Razorblade Tears yet, only Blacktop Wasteland and this one of course! I do own Razorblade on Kindle so need to get to it soon. (edited) 6mo
Hooked_on_books I‘ve just finished reading the judgement in the official TOB and am absolutely disgusted. Brainwyrms knocks out Chain-Gang? I don‘t have enough expletives for that! I realize Chain-Gang isn‘t for everyone, but it‘s phenomenal for those it works for. I feel like I need a shower. 🤬 6mo
Kristy_K @AmyG Yes! I would have enjoyed it a lot more if not for the daughter. 6mo
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - yeah…. I was astounded, too. But that kinda is the Tourney. It‘s wild. 6mo
Bookpearl Cosby pulled me in as if I was one of his officers trying to solve the case. I was invested starting at page one and took off running(reading) at full speed once I realized he was speaking about a town I‘m quite familiar with. 6mo
squirrelbrain Not only do they put most of the wrong books forward to the shortlist, then they make weird decisions like that! 🙄🤔 @Hooked_on_books 6mo
squirrelbrain I love that you felt like a police officer! @Bookpearl and how fascinating that you knew the town as well. 6mo
BkClubCare For both of these, I skim-skipped through to read the end rather than right out DNF‘d. HF just did not capture me - I disliked the MC‘s voice and the repetition over and over again. And unfortunately, I ran out of time for AtSB before it disappeared from my Libby app. 6mo
kwmg40 I loved All the Sinners Bleed. Very glad to see it move to the next round. 6mo

This is probably the last #LitsyToB24 entry I‘ll manage before the voting starts. I liked it, though it was more violent and brutal than I expected. I didn‘t realize it was about a series killer. It felt overstuffed with issues that Sheriff Crown is working through and the plotting was occasionally awkward IMO. Titus Crown is a great character, though. That‘s where I think Cosby excels. This could easily been the start of a series.

Cosby does it again. This book is thrilling, upsetting, evocative, and impossible to put down while still hard to read after dark. The protagonist is a flawed lawman who is trying to serve his community in a dark and violent time. Check the content warnings, this book may have the scariest serial killer ever. And Cosby‘s writing is so tight, so perfect, that he puts you right in the moment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So good! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

A small Virginia town with a black sheriff is rocked by a series of murders. I enjoyed but wasn't blown away by Razorblade Tears. I devoured this book, though. It was like a Sidney Poitier movie made today where he didn't have to tiptoe around racist white folk. Some of the scenarios could have felt cliche, but the sheriff's jaded attitude helped them feel different. Dark and violent, but easy to get sucked into. Highly recommended.

Wow! Just WOW! I searched for “thrillers by authors of color” for our library‘s winter reading challenge category “author of a different race/religion from you.” This book came up. If you like southern noir crime fiction, definitely give this a go! Jemgirl2014 @Ericalambbrown “Razorblade Blade Tears” for sure! I still need to read “Blacktop Wasteland “ but I hear that‘s a good one too! 😃 7mo

This is the second book I‘ve read by this author, and he‘s now an auto-read author for me. The majority of books I read are written by female authors, and reading SA Crosby is a great reset for me. He‘s raw, real, and reminds me how privileged my American experience has been. I hope there is more story for us about Titus Crown.

Suet624 Great review. I feel the same way. 7mo

I finally got to finish this one and it‘s Miss Priss approved! Definitely 5 stars ⭐️ there are some trigger warnings and it is really graphic at times, but I enjoyed it! Seems weird to say that! This will be an auto buy author for me!

If you have read it who do you visualize as Titus?? I will put my thoughts in the comments!!

I like the setting of this novel and how well Cosby puts the reader inside the MC's thoughts. It's a little difficult to keep track of the many characters at times, and Cosby uses a LOT of similes (and the content is a little intense to read so soon after I read The Reformatory), but otherwise I found this mystery/thriller highly enjoyable. I can see myself checking out other books by this author.

S.A. Cosby is a great writer. I read Razorblade Tears but thought it was a little too violent. It took me longer than usual to finish this one because it was too disturbing to read close to bedtime. I really liked the lead character and his family dynamics. I felt like this had maybe one or two too many things going on but I enjoyed the story overall. This was another pick from my #AuldLangSpine list from @Amiable

Amiable His books are definitely violent, that‘s for sure! I‘m always mesmerized by his ability to write realistic dialogue. I love a book with characters who sound like real people you might know. 8mo
MallenNC @Amiable This one was actually less violent (on page) than Razorblade Tears but the case was more disturbing. And yes, his dialogue is very well done. I am from NC, so his Virginians seemed very real to me. 8mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Hey! I am loving this book but I have a question! Did I miss what happened with Titus and DeLacrain??? 8mo
MallenNC @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks In one of the later chapters Titus tells his brother what happened. It‘s toward the very end. I can tell you but you may not have gotten there yet. 8mo
