The Clay Girl
The Clay Girl | Heather Tucker
Vincent Appleton smiles at his daughters, raises a gun, and blows off his head. For the Appleton sisters, life had unravelled many times before. This time it explodes. Eight-year-old Hariet, known to all as Ari, is dispatched to Cape Breton and her Aunt Mary, who is purported to eat little girls . . . With Ari on the journey is her steadfast companion, Jasper, an imaginary seahorse. But when they arrive in Pleasant Cove, they instead find refuge with Mary and her partner Nia. As the tumultuous 60s ramp up in Toronto, Ari is torn from her aunts and forced back to her twisted mother and fractured sisters. Her new stepfather Len and his family offer hope, but as Ari grows to adore them, shes severed violently from them too, when her mother moves in with the brutal Dick Irwin. Through the sexual revolution and drug culture of the 1960s, Ari struggles with her fathers legacy and her mothers addictions -- testing limits with substances that numb and men who show her kindness. She spins through a chaotic decade of loss and love, the devilish and divine, with wit, tenacity, and the astonishing balance unique to seahorses. The Clay Girl is a beautiful tour de force that traces the story of a child, sculpted by kindness, cruelty and the extraordinary power of imagination, and her families -- the one shes born in to and the one she creates.

This was a five star read for sure and it‘s so well done I‘m honestly surprised I don‘t hear more about it. The subject matter of the story is quite difficult but it is told so uniquely and with such hope that the story actually lifts you up. Don‘t let this one pass you by.

The writing in this novel was beautiful and the story compelling. It is a tale of a young female survivor of neglectful parents. I think it would be a perfect read for fans of “Where the Crawdads Sing“. I really loved it and am excited to read the sequel next.

This book is so many things I don‘t like - poetic language and a story of the terrible things people do to children. However I loved it - Ari is a fabulous, sadly old before her time protagonist and I found the language beautiful and hopeful. I think this is one that will stick.

How do you even begin to describe a book like this? Part A Little Life, part All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, part poetry, but still, completely its own. The writing did get a bit too poetic for me, and at times, I didn‘t even understand what I was reading. But the story about a #child dealing with too much shit trying to find some heroes in her life kept me turning the pages until the end.

This might be my favourite book, ever. It was written like nothing I‘ve read, in a very long-time. The story itself could have been gritty/grizzly and under a heavier hand it could have been a very different tale. Ari is one of those characters who you want to feel sorry for but she won‘t allow it. The book is about finding your family and seeing the good, even in the worst of times. Of stepping up when it would be easier to step back. I LOVED it.

This book was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. It made my heart swell with love and happiness, it made it break from sadness, and it made me want to explode with anger. Heather's writing is truly musical - all the words just rolled through my mind like a song and I could easily go back and read it again just to write down my favourite quotes. And such amazing characters. I turned the last page and I didn't want to let them go.

The language in this book is pure magic. The story is inspirational. Hariet is a adolescent girl who is wise beyond her years. She's had a challenging life but she finds a way to overcome, thrive in fact. I don't know whether to feel sorry for her or envy her. A little bit of both perhaps. Can't say enough good things about this book. Right up my alley!
