After seeing so many good things about this book I was certainly expecting something very different to what I got! I just didn't get this book at all. I found it dull, I didn't relate to or like the characters one bit. I don't always have to relate to or like a character but the problem was I just didn't care about them. The writing was ok but nothing special. Have I completely missed the point of this book or are there others who didn't care? 😂

Glad I got this out from the library and saved my money. Agree with what others have said when it comes to too many characters. Also everything seemed very deliberate - 'red herrings' and such. I often felt "oh the author wants me to believe this now". Not great although against my will it was still a page turner. I was disappointed with what I found when I got there.

What a great book to start 2018 off with! It was the perfect remedy to begin to drag me out of a very long reading slump!

Rebecca was fantastic. I flew through the last 1/3 of the book, wanting to know what was happening. Think I'll watch the Hitchcock film adaptation this weekend and see how it compares 📚

I can't remember the last time I was so conflicted about a book. I loved it when I first started reading it and probably could've read it in one sitting if I didn't have other things to do! I was sure it was going to be 4/5 stars. I liked the concept & was enjoying the writing style and characters. However, I was completely lost by the end of the book and reading whole sections without a clue what was going on! Don't have much luck with #manbooker

Completed my 40 book challenge today with a great book. I loved reading more about McGonagall and Lupin - two of my favourite characters although I did shed a little tear reading Lupin's chapter 😢

I've heard so many great things about this book but I just don't get what's so great? I didn't connect with the characters, I was bored for a lot of the book and it felt way too long. There were characters who were completely pointless - which wouldn't be too bad if you didn't have to waste time reading chapters about them. In the end I was rushing through to finish. Oh and the 10 page chapter that was one long sentence almost made me DNF it.

Very tired this morning (Inconsiderate neighbours banging front doors at 6:30 on Sunday morning!) However, woke up to 5000 Litsy points. I don't use Litsy as much as I should and I need to change that. It's refreshing to see an online commubirry that is calm, peaceful and supportive of other members - and we're all mad about books 😆📚

We follow Nadia and Saeed who meet in an un-named city experiencing upheaval and violence. Rumours begin to appear about doors taking people to other places. This was really interesting and a great way of discussing immigration/refugees etc. If it had carried on this way it would've been 4/5 ⭐️However the 2nd half of the book was dull, boring and repetitive. The writing style irritated me with REALLY long sentences - sometimes almost a page long!

A tale set in rural Ireland in the 1800s surrounding a child who cannot walk or talk and is considered by some to be a changeling. This is Hannah Kent's second novel (I am yet to read Burial Rights) which explores Irish folk lore and superstition and it was wonderful. I look forward to reading more Hannah Kent and am moving her first novel up my TBR 📚

I'm a mess 😭 What a wonderful story! Would recommend but suggest you read it with a box of tissues and a nice cup of tea to perk you up afterwards.

Set in a world where women have 'the power' to channel electricity through their hands, tipping the power balance in favour of women. I feel like it was a great idea which wasn't used to its full potential. I also didn't connect with the characters and would have liked to see some who struggled with the idea of having this power or some who used it in a more positive way. It's up for the #baileysprize tonight and is a favourite but not one for me

After what feels like a lifetime I have finally finished this book! It was great being back with Kvothe and the first half of the book was a 5⭐️ read. However, about 3/4 through I struggled a bit and didn't like the characters/settings involved as much as his time in the university. The exact same thing happened with Name of the Wind as well. This is as great series though and I hopefully won't have to wait too long for the final part! 4⭐️

#weekendreads I don't normally read this many at once (I'm also reading The Lewis Man on my kindle) but they're all so different and I'm enjoying every single one. The problem I have now is, I finally started The Wise Man's Fear and don't want to leave this world! Not a bad problem to have I guess 🙂

A fantastic collection of short stories. She is the queen of suspense and sheer creepiness!! My favourites were the title story 'The Birds' and 'The Apple Tree' Is the Hitchcock film any good? Have tried to watch it twice now but my poor cat gets so stressed we have to turn it off 🙀😿

I'm bailing at 32%. I know loads of people love this book but it just didn't do it for me. I thought it was an interesting idea for a book and as a gamer and a child of the 80s thought it would be great but the characters and the I plot just aren't holding my attention and I'm not wanting to pick it up and read. Maybe I'll watch the film when it come out to see how it ends.

I've been reading this over the Easter break and have loved it! 4.5 ⭐️ Different to other Stephen King books I've read (Carrie, It, The Shining etc). I loved reading about the food, fashions and day to day life of the 50s and 60s (good and bad), parts were tense, parts were intriguing and parts were touching. A fantastic read!

Some early morning reading while hubby is snoring 😴 I love these little books. My favourite part of this one was reading about potions and the meaning behind some of the ingredients.

Started off my bank holiday finishing off this. Started off as a 4⭐️ read then dipped to a 3 about 3/4 of the way through as I really didn't like the way the story was going. However, the ending did pull it back slightly so I'll mark it as a pick. Don't want to say anything about the plot as I went in somehow not anything about it which is the best way. Really enjoyed the writing so will pick up The Remains of the Day at some point 📚

A DNF for me. To be honest, I didn't really have a problem with the book it just wasn't the right time to read it. It can be a bit heavy l reading about these character's lives! Think I'll put it back in my TBR jar and try it another time - so a DNF for now.

This is only the second book I've read by Neil Gaiman but the second one I have loved. I love the way he tells his stories and I find his worlds a great place to escape. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well this was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed this more than I thought that I would although it's clear to see it's the first in a series. I was expecting the story to lead somewhere so was surprised when it ended. I'm interested enough to pick up the second which I'm guessing will have a bit more action.

I didn't have the best reading month in March ☹️It started off with a 5⭐ read then a couple of weeks in the middle of a huge book slump and a couple of ok reads. The Pottermore book was great though 👍🏻 Onwards and upwards in April! 📚

This classic science fiction book about one man and his time machine was ok. I started out really enjoying it and speeding along but about half way through it kind of stalled and I ended up not liking the second half as much.

The first book I've read cover to cover in two weeks! Yey me! Ok, so it was less than 100 pages but when in the middle of a horrendous book slump I'm chuffed 😃 It was great to be back in the world again!

DNF. This is a true crime novel about a serial killer dubbed 'The Monster of Florence' and how Preston and Spezi try to figure out who it is. I thought it would be interesting but the writing style put me off. It was written as if it was a cheesy, fictional thriller and it just didn't do it for me.

I've decided to put down Stephen King's It as I can't make decent enough headway on it when working 5 days a week and I know it will bring on a book slump if I don't finish a book for 2/3 weeks! I'm going to save it for the Easter holidays when I can dedicate some time to it. For now - this is going to be my weekend read 📚

Seeing all of the #stephenking17 posts on my timeline has made me want to pick this one up! Technically a re-read but haven't read it in about 17 years! 83 pages down, a LOT more to go...

So... hmmm... The only other Ali Smith I've read is Autumn which I thought was ok. I've just picked up this and - what?! I'm feeling so stupid reading this book and just not understanding what the words on the page are actually saying! What am I reading? Other people seem to love Ali Smith and her writing style but I literally don't understand it! Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Phew... I've just finished this in the last few minutes and I'm emotionally exhausted! Through my time with the characters I have gotten to know and love them and right now feel heartbroken! I have never read a book that has had such an impact on me as this has the past week. The characters and their stories will stay with me for a very long time and even though I rate this 5⭐ and a favourite of mine I'm not sure I'll ever be able to read it again

Relaxing night with Chamber of Secrets. Sat here thinking about A Little Life though... It must be a good book if I'm thinking about it during Harry Potter!

I've got a long weekend of relaxing ahead of me so I've decided to make a start on this mother of a book! Looking at reviews, it's going to be an emotional few days!

Treated myself to a mixed bag of books today (not including the 10 I took out from the library 📚😏) Now to decide which to start with 🤔

This was going to be a so-so 3⭐ until the ending which I HATED! So far fetched, too many ridiculous coincidences and absolutely hateful characters! It seems to have gotten decent reviews though so maybe just not a good match for me.

Reading this seems to have lifted me out of a February slump 😁yey! I've been putting this off after hearing mixed reviews but I'm so glad I picked it up. It is quite different from Long Way.... as it focuses on just two main characters but I still loved it! It's made me want to pick up the first again. I would say it's more of a spin off than a sequel and you could probably read this as a stand alone. I wonder what the third will focus on?

I read 50% of this book before coming to the realisation that I just wasn't enjoying it! It's taken me 12 days to read 300 and something pages! I initially thought the magic system sounded interesting but I got bored of the story and the characters and the writing started to irritate me after a while. Ah well... the search continues for an epic fantasy series that I will enjoy and stick with to the end!

This book really packs a punch and would definitely recommend it. I found the essays that were written in a more conversational style to be the most powerful. Others felt a little dry and rather like reading an academic paper. Definitely an important read although I would have liked to read some povs from people who weren't journalists/in the media. A 4⭐ read from me. Maybe we should buy and send in bulk to certain politicians!

Couldn't join in the #cosyreadingnight read-a-thon last night as I was out seeing this wonderful performance of Swan Lake. I really should make a point of going to the ballet/theatre/opera more often! 🎟🎟

Picked this up from the library today. I felt like I needed to pick it up sooner rather than later.

I enjoyed the sequel in this duology slightly more than the first book. I do think though that I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a stand alone. I liked the start of the first book and the end of the second, the parts in the middle were a bit 'meh' and felt like they were there to pad it out into two books.

Eowyn Ivey's done it again! This was a wonderful depiction of Alaska through the eyes of a colonel tasked with the job of mapping/exploring it in the 1800s shortly after its purchase by the US. Her descriptions of the environment and her ability to write about such harsh conditions in a captivating way is brilliant. I also loved the pictures and newspaper excerpts that were dotted throughout the novel, which added a sense of authenticity to it 5⭐
