@WildAlaskaBibliophile is working today, but I've still got a busy day. Woke up way too early, so I built our new dinner table and chairs. Made a couple trips to the dump, and passed this eagle. Long overdue deep clean for the car. Obligatory celebration of #independentbookstoreday and a quick brewery stop before finishing my errands and hopefully squeezing in a quick nap 😉

It took me a long time to get round to the second one in this series but in so glad I did! I don‘t think anything other than Scream has ever managed to be a slasher that comments on slashers, gets a few laughs and also is a genuine good example of the genre and a love letter to the classics this well.

I love the Native American heroine too - there aren‘t enough good books with native MCs in horror and this is so well written

My favorite book in August was the masterful sequel to My Heart is a Chainsaw. Jones‘ homage to horror movies keeps getting batter and better and I‘m very much looking forward to the next book. Jones is an automatic buy and my go-to recommendation for anyone who likes to read horror. So good.

Had it not been for the #scarathlon word count stats for this book, I would have few points to offer #teambooklovers halfway through the month. But this gory novel offered an embarrassment of riches. So despite few posts, not having my bingo points together except for the 24 hour and quick sprints, I managed 27,328 points, 27,120 from this book alone!. @Bookwormjillk

Love SGJ but I‘m not into slasher movies and this is an homage to slashers as was the first in this trilogy. Loved his dark humor as always and themes of gentrification, stolen land. One chapter about the ghost girl Stacey Grqves haunting the drowned town under Indian Lake was especially beautifully written. So a so-so read for me.

Not as good as the first book. I still love Jade, but the slasher film connection feels tedious in this one and sometimes the sequence of events feels like a slog.

Spouse and I went ocean kayaking this afternoon (we kayaked about 3 miles then "surfed" back in to the beach), and now I'm relaxing with a book and a GF beer before dinner. It's a lovely way to spend our 24th wedding anniversary (and to try to forget that I have over 11 hours of grading to do between tomorrow and Saturday morning).

Yes, I tore through the sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw. In true horror film fashion, the characters waste no time convincing anyone there is a slasher in the hapless town from the first book. Instead, the survivors from the first story are prepared, as much as they can be. The story is a bit convoluted—lots of lore and local legends here—and a lot more horror (and serial killer) groupies (ick) too. Definitely a fitting sequel

First book featured a murderous rampage on an Idaho lake w/ themes of colonialism, gentrification, slasher films. Where am I reading it? At night in a deserted marina on an Idaho lake, a place also feeling the squeeze of wealthy people from elsewhere taking over. End of season, all lights are turned off too.. which I like. But…ooh. #BOOklovers 😳😳🔪🔪

The series keeps getting better & better—if you are a fan of horror, and/or slasher movies in particular, these books are not to be missed. Conviction overturned, Jade Daniels returns home only to find that death once again stalks the residents of Proofrock Idaho. She‘s already been the “final girl” so someone else will have to stop the killer…if they can. Jones writes with a cinematic eye & this is a visceral, entertaining read.

Jones is an automatic buy for me…and apparently, reading horror as the sun sets is becoming my jam…

This sequel sees slasher-film expert and final girl Jade returning to her hometown just in time for a massive snowstorm and the arrival of escaped serial killer Dark Mill South. Jade has let her hair return to its natural color and wants to go by Jennifer, but it doesn't take long to see she is still living in the genre she knows all too well. Very gory, somewhat too meta at times, but the ending tied it all together in brutal fashion.

A great sequel to one of my favorite books from 2021. Stephen Graham Jones manages to deepen these characters and build his world to a staggering, emotionally fulfilling degree. Very curious to see what the final book will be like.

What a whirlwind.
Much as it didn't occur to me at the end of My Heart is a Chainsaw that there would be a continuation to the story, it makes all the sense in the world that a book focused on catering to and challenging tropes of the slasher genre, final girls and horror movies would have sequels. 1/?

Like most sequels, this doesn‘t outpace the original. There‘s still plenty of clever (and funny if you‘re a horror nerd like me) references, lots of descriptive gore, and a return to an epic setting: rural Idaho. But the characters‘ arc gets lost by having a rotation of POVs, so other than Jade & Leitha, it‘s hard to care about anyone else.

(Still looking forward to Part III, tho)

Up in 8th position from my #BirthdayHaul is the sequel to My Heart Is A Chainsaw. I loved every bloody, brutal minute of that so here‘s hoping this one is just as cynical, sarcastic & bloody as that! Jade has just been released from prison after her conviction is overturned and returns to Proofrock. But serial killer Dark Mill South escapes during a prison transfer & uses Indian Lake as his new hunting ground.🔪

Two things made Chainsaw great: Jones‘ deconstruction of the genre and Jade F****ing Daniels. Here, Jade is nearly reduced to bit player status, and Jones seems less interested in deconstruction and more interested in tricking the reader. It‘s messy with too many cryptic passages and not enough focus.

The Big Showdown is Reaper‘s saving grace. It is an amazing set piece and I literally could not set the book down through the whole sequence.

I was overly amused that these were the two books waiting at the library for me! Heal the trauma! Bring on the trauma? 😂😂😂

Glad to have finished this one in time for a late snowstorm!

SGJ does it again- a gory, touching, and… a little confusing at parts. But that just means it deserves a reread!

If you‘re good with body horror, body counts, and a lot of cold, pick this one up and wait impatiently for the third installment with me!

This is book 2 of the Indian Lake trilogy and it takes place a few years after the Independence Day Massacre. We meet a very different “Jade” aka Jennifer and see what she‘s been dealing with since the aftermath of book one.

Long live the slasher. Long live Jade Fucking Daniels.

I really liked My Heart is a Chainsaw and was excited for book 2, which turns out to be a very satisfying next installment. I would say not quite as good as the first one (I feel it could have been tightened up a bit), but very much a solid pick. It‘s best to read these books in order and if you like horror (especially laced with a little humor), they are a must!

The best horror films always have a sequel. Sometimes that sequel is better than the original . Other times that sequel is worse. Stephen Graham Jones‘ Don‘t Fear The Reaper can be described as the latter not the former. I‘ve been waiting so patiently for this second book in the series. I was so excited that I forgot that I preordered the hardcover and preordered it via iBook. So now I have two copies. 😂😂 #dontfearthereaper #stephengrahamjones

A fantastic follow up My Heart is a Chainsaw. This trilogy is a homage to slasher horror. If you are a fan of horror movies you should definitely check out this series. It is best to not know much, and though you could read this alone, you will get way more out of this if you start at the beginning of the story. 5⭐️

I‘m usually not a fan of second books in trilogies, but this sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw was fantastic! It was scary and a geeky nod to slasher film aficionados.

It‘s four years later, and Jade has just returned to Proofrock. Dark Mill South, an indigenous serial killer, escaped transport the same day. As a snow storm drops in, people drop dead. Could this inventive killer know even more about slasher movies than Jade?

Like the previous book in this trilogy, this book is a love letter to slasher films. I think I enjoyed this one more than the first.

Four years after the events from the first book Jade returns to Proofrock only to find herself caught up in another mass murder There are a lot of different POV's in this one, and at times I got a little confused.

Fans of Chainsaw will love this one too.

I'm excited for many of these upcoming horror reads. I have been fortunate enough to read ARCs of Lone Women, The Nightmare Man, and The Haunting of Alejandra. All three were excellent. I'll be reading the tagged book this month.
