This book it different. The plot isn't the story (which is used more like a setting) bc the plot is the characters. Not everyone likes that kind of writing but I happen to really love it. This isn't for everyone and the anti political recognition of first world problems can be a bit tedious at times but nonetheless I loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm usually really good about staying relatively on top of my #BOTM choices - but not always. This was in my Nov 2016 box and is the oldest unread BOTM pick I have on my shelf by far. It didn't get much love so I kept putting it off. I'm determined to give it a shot this year! 😂
What's the oldest BOTM pick still unread on your shelf?
Spoiled Millennials who take up activism to avoid earning a living and a plot that weakly revolves around the inheritance of a run down house in Jersey City. Why? So many good writers writing forgettable books these days.

What a difference just sticking with it can make. A few nights ago when I started this book I was dragging through the first 30 pages, wondering when it was going to get better. Fast forward to today, where I‘m 20 pages from the end, and I stayed up until 3am this morning reading because I couldn‘t put it down! It‘s not the best book I‘ve ever read, but it‘s definitely one of the most unique and well-executed. I won‘t soon forget it.
Wow. This has got horrid reviews, but I‘m going to give it a try anyway. The first 10 pages were awful, but it started picking up after that.
On an unrelated note, I‘ve always wondered how novels with terrible openings get published. If I were an editor I‘d have turned this down just based on the first 10 pages. Or I would‘ve cut the opening down significantly.
Got to a point in the book where I thought it was the end but it's still going strong. I find that I am more concerned about the house than the characters.
My bookshelf collapsed while I was cleaning so I had to move everything 😩 Luckily this piece of my library doesn't block the mountains too much 🙏🏻
I've never read a book with so many unlikeable characters! The protagonist was the most pathetic persona of all time; I was nauseatingly embarrassed for her as a woman. And all the dilly-dallying in the story for what plot? Well, I'm still not sure about that either.
BUT! I finished the damn book and my 22-year-old, wanna-be alternative, hipster scum self would have thought the ideologies & lifestyles featured were really cutting edge & cool🙄

Day 3 of #riotgrams: #onewordtitle. Which ones have you read? Are any on your #tbr?
There are so many 2016 books I missed out on. These are just the ones I already own and still haven't read.

My favorite thing about it was how very real it was. It just had a way of feeling like an extension of contemporary reality, in terms of globalization and social issues, social experiences. It was also super unny and daring. - Chorel
4/5🌟🌟🌟. I am not sure I understood the entire thing. I may need to reread some time. Some of the characters were a little underdeveloped for me. I would have liked to know more about Robs background
Still plugging away at this book. To bad grad school, work, and life takes up a good portion of my time. I may have had this finished already! (Side note: I love all the things that take up a good portion of my life, especially my kids 😍😍)
Reading this right now and seeing mixed reviews. I am about 70 pages in.....I am enjoying it so far, however, I feel I have reached the top and it is about to go down hill. Anyone else read? What were your thoughts?
Oof. Where do I start? Well, the beginning started off strong for me. I didn't know what to expect really and it seemed kind of funny, quirky and full of promise. Then it just kind of unravels into a messy plot line and super annoying dialogue. I tried, I really tried to like this one. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ or ⭐️⭐️ #litsyatoz #letterN
Coffee & Nicotine on a Sunday morning. I'm about a hundred pages in and not really sure how I feel about it. The dialogue is kind of driving me nuts. 🤔☕️🚬
I finished two books on New Year's, but didn't post my reviews. Here is the first: Nicotine. I had never read anything by Nell Zink, but this one sounded quirky and fun. I liked aspects of this one, particularly the writing. But it also felt disjointed. The beginning of the book is clunky and the characters were difficult to connect with. That said, I am glad I read it and did find it interesting.
After her father passes away, Penny, decides to fix up her fathers childhood home. Instead, she finds the house is occupied with a group of friendly anarchist squatters that have renamed the home "Nicotine."
2016 was the year I started taking pictures of my books ❤ Featuring the Boulder Bookstore, my trip to the Van Gogh exhibit, and my awesome mom ✨❤
#funfridayphoto My #TBR for 2017. I have one main bookshelf in my husband's "man cave" and two shelves are devoted to #TBR. It's not much and I have quite a few unread books on our decorative shelves upstairs but I recently went through and culled three entire bookcases worth. I try to only have books I really, truly want to read and I only keep them after I've read them if they are #BOTM or if I really loved them!
Snuggling under the new quilt my sister made me and getting my reading on.
The cover is fantastic, the writing is brilliant but the plot kinda made me feel like I'm too uncool/old to 'get it'. It's crazy, interesting and unique but I don't know what it all means! Would still read more by Nell Zink though - give me a rec!
More in detailed review will be coming soon. However, I will say that this book was deeply problematic in relation to sexual orientation and expressions of sexuality, particularly as it relates to the Ace community. 🙅🏻 It wasn't unreadable, but deeply, profoundly problematic.
#ereader #SeasonsReadings2016 #currentread I mostly use my kindle Oasis for ereading but I also use my iPhone. I'm working on books from the #tob2017 longlist and some other #books in translation.
#TBRTuesday #BookoftheMonth #Bookmail! 😍 Can't wait to dig in! Anyone else pick this one? ❤️❤️❤️my #BOTM subscription! 📚📚📚
I LOVE this book. It drew me in from the very first words and held on right until the end. I loved the mystery of Penny's family and that Zink gives you the pieces of the back story, but doesn't spell it out - lets you get there on your own. #BOTM is 2 for 2 with me now! I'm already anticipating next month! Also love the color theme I've got going on here 😎
They could have let Dad sleep through all that. Everybody knows people are animals, only smarter. It's wrong to torture any animal, even for it's own good. Especially then. But instead of giving him real drugs, they kept wanting him to be alert, so he could make his peace with God. I always thought religuous people were massively annoying. Now I know they're evil.
I really like Nell Zink's quirky style. I can totally understand why people might not like or enjoy this one. I really enjoy how she writes her characters. I could not put this down.
