Jane Eyre: A Guide to Reading and Reflecting
Jane Eyre: A Guide to Reading and Reflecting | Charlotte Bront, Karen Swallow Prior
Jane Eyre. Frankenstein. The Scarlet Letter. You're familiar with these pillars of classic literature. You have seen plenty of Frankenstein costumes, watched the film adaptations, and may even be able to rattle off a few quotes, but do you really know how to read these books? Do you know anything about the authors who wrote them, and what the authors were trying to teach readers through their stories? Do you know how to read them as a Christian? Taking into account your old worldview, as well as that of the author? In this beautiful cloth-over-board edition bestselling author, literature professor, and avid reader Karen Swallow Prior will guide you through Jane Eyre. She will not only navigate you through the pitfalls that trap readers today, but show you how to read it in light of the gospel, and to the glory of God. This edition includes a thorough introduction to the author, context, and overview of the work (without any spoilers for first-time readers), the full original text, as well as footnotes and reflection questions throughout to help the reader attain a fuller grasp of Jane Eyre. The full series currently includes: Heart of Darkness, Sense and Sensibility, Jane Eyre, and Frankenstein. Make sure to keep an eye out for the next classics in the series.

1. I have a pair of my great-grandfather's eyeglasses, circa 1890s. I also have an authentic piece of coal from the RMS TITANIC.
2. As long as strong heroines are needed, JANE EYRE should still be relevant. I hope. 🖤🩶🖤

So eloquently written and it has resemblances of differing books I have read in the past. Superb eloquence of dialogue within certain impoverished scenes, reminds me sometimes of Hugo, or when I am transcended to a more pastoral scene I feel like Hardy‘s hand is penning the page. Or during the scene of quaint but sophisticated and humble enjoyment I am transported to Howard‘s End. The ending had perceived notions of Great Expectations. Remarkable.

I love reading new intros, so I was excited to see these on #netgalley! Prior does an excellent job introducing students to the texts, highlighting important themes and explaining relevant background info. And there are so many great study questions! The books are from a Christian press, however, and assume readers will be also, so they're not for everyone.

I always wonder if in-depth intros are too spoilery for new readers. Is it just me? 📚🤓

Bookwormjillk Yes! I got spoiled on Mansfield Park because I read the intro. 4y
Ruthiella Way too spoilery . They should be Afterwords instead of Introductions, IMO. (edited) 4y
Linsy @Ruthiella Right??! I only love reading them after I've read the book. I've never understood why you would point out all the major plot points. 4y
Linsy @Bookwormjillk That's happened to me!! I had to start reading the intros after I finished the book the first time. They should really give new readers spoiler warnings; or, as @ruthiella said, make them afterwards! 4y
Bookwormjillk @Linsy yes! They should just be afterwards 👏👏 4y

I actually read this book because of the references in The Eyre Affair. It was really fun to read the original source after finishing that book. The book itself was good, a sweet story, characters that were relatable. I also find it interesting to read novels written in other times. #thatsclassic #janneyre #charlottebronte

This novel was on my TBR for 4 years before I was asked to read it for university this year. I'm ecstatic that we are asked for it this semester because I wouldn't have read it if it wasn't.(I have a slight 🤏🏼 fear of classics although I'm a literature student. I don't know why. Don't ask me)
I loved this story so much that I know I'll re-read it after the exams. Also, I'm thinking about reading Wide Sargasso Sea now since I loved this one.

Very good. It is such a heart wrenching and gut wrenching book as it shows how you can be consumed with love and it's effect on you. It may show all these things but it also shows the other side of love and how it can conquer all. Also it explores how you can be resilient through tough times.

I wanted to love it. I expected to love it. The writing is amazing.

But Rochester was so immature that I could not vibe with him at all. I actually loved Jane until she was stupid enough to make the VERY LAST DECISION SHE MAKES. I won't specify to avoid spoilers. I didn't understand how she allowed that. Nothing showed that Rochester actually went through personal growth, just that he was "punished." Apparently.

Such a let down. ?

Lovely writing and young Jane is an interesting character. However, i can feel the 1800s Christian indoctrination coming along to strangle that out of her.

Also, this is the coffee mug that I won during the 24 in 48 readathon years back. It's remained one of my favorites. 🥰

I decided to make a #BookspinBingo board because I like Bingo boards and I had a reread (tagged) and a new spiritual book already started, so why not mix them in with the gang? I don't expect to get many bingos, but it was fun to make. Either way, I'm super excited because the #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin are both parts of series I'm eager to continue! Yay!

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I love putting my list into the board because it's mostly books I'm hoping to read this month anyway. So I may not score a bingo, but it's one more thing for me to check off and feel like I'm getting somewhere 😂 4y

Mehso-so

So.

I always feel a little bit bad when I don't LOVE a classic. (Except Dickens. Sorry, y'all - just don't like him.)

I knew hardly anything going into this. I knew that she was a governess, there was a man named Rochester, and a mystery of someone in the attic (which I guessed correctly early on - well-known trope). I thought that the writing was lovely. I adore rich descriptions, which this had in spades. I just felt like I read (cont 👇🏻)

mom2bugnbee three different books. I didn't understand the purpose of some of the side plot lines. I love books that make every sentence count, and this did not do that. Maybe that's a style thing? I listened to this through the podcast Phoebe Reads a Mystery and loved her voice. It won't stop me from reading more Brontë. I was just underwhelmed. Apologies if this is your favorite. ☺ (I did enjoy the fact that I grew up near the St. John's River 👇🏻 4y
mom2bugnbee which is all I heard when she said that name. 😂 2.5/5, maybe bumped to a 3. 4y
