Pride and Predujice.
Pride and Predujice. | Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman, Mr. Bennet living in Longbourn. Page 2 of a letter from Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra (11 June 1799) in which she first mentions Pride and Prejudice, using its working title First Impressions. (NLA) Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth. Pride and Prejudice retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of "most loved books." It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, selling over 20 million copies, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes.

I‘ve always enjoyed classics, but they tend to get a wee boring or confusing during the middle of the novels due to the long sentences and old writing style; however, this book never did that! Jane Austen wrote a masterpiece that captivated me the entire time. The plot was simple yet intriguing and the relationships between the characters were humorous and well-written. I love it!

My souvenir from the Library of Congress gift shop. This just seemed fitting for both me and the moment.

CatLass007 I completely agree with the sentiment on the charm. I think I‘m very envious of your trip to the Library of Congress. I may have to add that to my bucket list. If I had a bucket list. My favorite place to visit in NYC is the New York Public Library. Is the LoC as gorgeous or is it a more modern building? 3mo
bookishbitch @CatLass007 it is not modern at all. There is lots of marble, wood, and mosaic tile in patterns and used to make picturesque scenes. Plus, there are exhibits. I saw James Madison's crystal flute and Thomas Jefferson's library, (his books that is) and they have a Gutenburg Bible. 3mo

I have seen this wonderful movie version more times than I have read the book. I wish I could pay a historian specializing in Regency England to watch it with me and answer all my questions. For example, what is that long brush on Jane's vanity? She is brushing her hair with a normal brush, so what is that?

rwmg Maybe Lizzie and Jane share the vanity table but each have their own hairbrush? 4mo
LitStephanie @rwmg that could be possible except Lizzie has her own room and vanity. I just don't know. 4mo
AnishaInkspill I\'m going to guess a hairbrush -- I may watch this adaptation in the next few months, if I do I will let yoou know. 2mo

Bookwomble My nana was a hairdresser & had different types of brush on her vanity table. I do remember her having one that shape which had softer bristles than the others in the set. Bearing in mind it was more than 50 years ago, I wasn't a hairdresser & wasn't encouraged to use it (though I did play with the set), I *think* it was used at the end of the brushing routine to give hair a glossy shine. I would only place a small wager on that, though! 😄 4w

#Pemberlittens probably know this. First-edition was printed as a set of three volumes.

So today's chapter number depends on whether edition you're reading follows the original: Volume 2 - Chapter 1 or if it goes sequential, its Chapter 24.

I'm going with Chapter 24 because it's easier for me to keep track. And today's quote: "Mr. Darcy was condemned as the worst of men."?
