Flannery O'Connor's unfinished novel is being published and I don't feel great about this. I get the interest, but maybe if she wasn't ready for the public to see it, it just doesn't need to be seen?

1 / 25 #shortstories for 2020

• First #shortstory of 2020 complete: "You Can't Be Any Poorer Than Dead" by Flannery O'Connor from the tagged book. As usual, I detected faint whiffs of religious hypocrisy and characters rather in need of the usual redemption. I'll try to read more Flannery O'Connor this year ?? •

• The last time I read Flannery O'Connor, I was an undergraduate trying to survive a challenging English course. I read some of her famous stories, and generally enjoyed them. If memory serves me correctly, I wrote an essay about either "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" or "Good Country People." Can't remember which one it was ? Anyway, I need to revisit her work, for sure •

I'm not quite sure what to say about this one. I realize this was written during a different time, but what did I just read? The stories were dark, chock full of racism, and kind of boring. I think maybe I missed something in my reading. She won the O'Henry and the National Book Awards and has an award named after her, but I honestly couldn't pinpoint what made her stories exceptional.

Suet624 I felt that way after reading this one. 6y

Flannery O'Connor's short stories are full of bizarre and eccentric characters who encounter grace in moments of shocking violence. O'Connor shows us the moment of potential transformation, but rarely whether these men and women truly change.

Seriously, this feels like an accomplishment. Started in June, 31 stories read in (according to Bookly) 45 sittings, finished today.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Quite an accomplishment! I hope to do that one day! 6y
Crazeedi I need to pick up one of her books. 6y

Graywacke @arubabookwoman I‘ve been warned about Wise Blood. I found myself thoroughly entertained by Enoch Emery in the short stories, and I wouldn‘t be surprised if she has some horrible thing in store for him. Hopefully I‘ll get there and enjoy it. 6y

It was a mystery, although it was right there in a glass case for everyone to see and there was a typewritten card telling all about it right there. But there was something the card couldn‘t say...

( from The Heart of the Park)

SqueakyChu I‘ve yet to read any story by this author although I keep those books hoping to do so one day! 😃 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu it‘s not easy to just pick up 500 pages of short stories, right?I‘ve had my copy over ten years. I wouldn‘t hesitate to encourage you to read the opening story, if that helps. Or skip to The Peeler. 😊 (edited) 6y
SqueakyChu I have quite a few books of short stories of that size. I always start them, never finish them...but that‘s okay. The first step, though, is to simply pick up the book. Haha! 6y
See All 12 Comments
Graywacke @SqueakyChu of course, in theory each story should be able to stand alone. Reading only one or several stories is something. 6y
SqueakyChu Actually, in some of my books they really do stand alone. For instance, I have an anthology of stories by Israeli authors. These I read at random in any order. While in Canada last year, I picked up an anthology of stories by Canadian authors. Oddly enough, I only read the first story in the Canadian anthology and didn‘t care for it. I haven‘t opened that book since! 😲 (edited) 6y
SqueakyChu Some short story books are mesmerizing, though, and are hard to put down. I favor short stories of such authors as Haruki Murakami, Jonathan Lethem, T.C. Boyle and Stephen King. 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu i can understand reading the first story of an anthology and stopping. The editor knows they need your interest up front. So the story they place first will say a lot about what they are trying to do with the collection. 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu but I‘m hit and miss. In the right mindset now, but for years I wasn‘t. My favorites with short stories - hmm, would take some thought. Grace Paley and Isaac Singer come to mind. 6y
SqueakyChu Yikes! That‘s a huge book, too! 😳 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu raymond carver, john cheever and Hemmingway come across as gaping holes. And this, by O‘Connor. 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu which is huge, Paley? She‘s fast though. As a writer she had no patience, she wants to say everything at once all in the first lines. Makes for quick fun reading. 6y
SqueakyChu My Canadian anthology of short stories is huge. I haven‘t read Paley, but know people generally like her short stories. (edited) 6y

Opened this intimidating brick last night

arubabookwoman I‘ve had that exact volume on my shelf for years. I keep avoiding it because short stories are difficult for me. 6y
Graywacke @arubabookwoman I understand, have the same issue often. Part of the reason I picked this up was because I seem to be in the right state of mind for them. 6y
Liz_M I love her writing, but it is almost too intense in novel length. Her stories work much better for me! I recommend only reading one or two a day. 6y
Graywacke @Liz_M this is good advice, Liz. That‘s kind of what I‘ve been doing. Read one story, then go do something while my head deals with. And I‘m still on her grad school storied!! 6y

The first time I saw a picture of Flannery O‘Connor, after hearing a recording of her reading “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and thinking the voice didn‘t fit the writing, I said, “No way that story or the novel called Wise Blood (link in the comments) was written by her.” My bad for judging a book by it‘s cover, she just looks so wholesome and sweet. I now have to reread both. So good.

PacNWFem I was brought to Flannery O'Connor by an English teacher years ago. The teacher thought I could understand Southern humor. Instead, I struggled with it but learning to appreciate it. Fast forward to 2016. On a long layover in Atlanta, I rented a car and drove out to Millidgeville and visited Flannery's beloved Andalusia Farm. Her world was preferably narrow -- some provided by her illness, some provided by her nature -- within beautiful grounds. 7y
Aimeesue When we lived in Georgia (Military, we moved a lot) I went to see her house in Millidgeville. The old Southern style house and the bucolic setting were a BIG contrast to my idea of O'Connor's life. I mean, she had PEACOCKS! 7y
Aimeesue @PacNWFem Look, we are both pilgrims to Millidgeville! Did you go to the Margaret Mitchell house as well? I'm not a fan of GWTW, but the MM House hosts a lot of author readings. I saw TC Boyle and Chris Cleave there. 7y
PacNWFem Cool! I did not get to Mitchell's home. I was ambivalent about it, but, in the end, I just ran out of time. Do you go on literary escapades often? I can tell our about my Betty Macdonald staycation. 7y

This powerful classic of Southern literature runs the gamut from hilarious (A Stroke of Good Fortune) to heartbreaking (The River). From near perfection (A Good Man is Hard to Find) to just plain awful (View of the Woods). I read one story a day and was sorry when I got to the end. Highly recommended!

Also, I am allergic to cats, but if I could have one, her name would absolutely be Pitty Sing!

Yeah let's just say that I'll be reading Flannery O'Connor forever and ever amen. She writes haunting Southern gothic stories with beautiful, complex characters and settings the reader can feel. Most of the stories are bleak and hopeless, yet they are often filled with hope and murmurs of grace. My suggestion is to start with the story "Revelation" from the back of the book so you can get a handle on what O'Connor is doing in her other stories.
