Mehso-so

Trying very hard to be funny, and showing it, this book is dated in its attitudes towards women and the characters were more caricatures than realistic. But a quick read and a local author, so I‘ll give it a so-so. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

One of the more famous works of true-crime, abetted by the author‘s added advantage of being a friend and confidante to almost all the absurdly rich, decadent and oh-so-genteel actors involved in this eerie Savannah murder case. Also part travelogue, this book makes you want to wander the historic town, spared by the destruction of the Civil War, and visit the lush garden squares and hauntingly beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery.

Here is another book I read for a challenge in November. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

This one is hard to rate. I liked the magical quality to the story but felt the ending was a bit too put together and didn't fit the feel of the story. This aside, it was one that pulled at my heart. 4⭐️

I have my doubts that I'm going to read anything in December that I'll like as much as I did Marmee. And though I loved Marmee, I think I may be looking at the final choice being between I Cannot Get You Close Enough and The Road to Dalton. I'm not sure I'll be able to choose.

This was absolutely lovely. One of my favorite aspects of a SAA book is her emphasis on the importance of female friendships. Loved this.

**Review contains a slight spoiler about a character's death**

One day, unhappy housewife Evelyn visits her mother-in-law at her new nursing home & gets talking to a resident there called Ninny Threadgoode. Well Ninny talks to Evelyn is more like it, but she starts to tell her about her life in Whistle Stop, a small town in Alabama in the 1920s & 1930s.

OutsmartYourShelf Despite herself, Evelyn is gradually drawn into Ninny's stories about the Threadgoode family especially Idgie, a rebellious tomboy who falls in love with a girl called Ruth Jamison & they open the Whistle Stop Cafe.

I saw the film probably a few years after it was released in 1991 & really liked it but haven't gotten around to reading the book until now.

OutsmartYourShelf It's a definite case of the film being better than the book & there are some big differences in the ending storyline. In the book, after Ruth's death, Idgie sort of disappears as a character & the reader doesn't really know what happened to her next. There's an epilogue which covers some of it but it was rather disappointing. I did like how Ninny's stories helped Evelyn turn her life around. 3.5🌟

OutsmartYourShelf TWs: racial slurs & racism (major), domestic violence & terminal illness (moderate), implied cannibalism (hinted at).
