After loving Napolitano‘s 2 most recent books, I snapped this one up when it popped up at my library. It follows a handful of characters, including Flannery O‘Connor and her peacocks, in small town Georgia in the late 50s/early 60s. I think she develops characters so well and I felt the emotions of these people right alongside them. And Otis approves of peacocks as storyline!

Mimi28 Beautiful picture!! I want one!! lol 11mo
Librarybelle Awesome photo! I‘m not familiar with this one by her…sounds interesting! 11mo

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 11mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know she wrote more than the two we‘re always talking about! 11mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Looks like her debut is out of print but is being rereleased in a couple months, so she actually has 4 books total. 11mo

My #doublespin selection for July 2021 was this fascinating anthology of the lives of ordinary people. There have been some adventures about the dialect in some of these stories. Edited: pictured behind is the state of my library at the moment, due to a huge move with my husband. So, @TheAromaofBooks I am working on my list to participate in #August BINGO. Wish me luck! ☺️🙂📦🚚📚🙏🏻

TheAromaofBooks I know that moving feeling!!! Good luck!! 3y

I have never read a book by Flannery O'Connor, have you? I'm not sure if I'd read this book to a kid, but just leave it there for them to discover. It's a little too Catholic and open about death for me. It's made me want to read a book by her, she was a fascinating character.

I teach several of O'Connor's stories every spring, and I decided this year particularly I needed some more context and to rethink whether I was going to teach them at all. I am grateful for the penultimate chapter especially in helping me to think about these things. I believe I'm going to have to continue my research though. Aside from all that, this book on its own is quite good.

SamAnne I‘m reading her complete story collection right now. Glad to finally read more of her but oh it can be a dark place! (edited) 4y

Normally I'd be out running right now on a Saturday morning, but I'm still feeling just a little under the weather, and I see no reason to push it. This all means I get some extra reading in before I need to start running errands

I am loving this picture book!

SW-T Sounds interesting. I recently saw a video of Flannery and her backwards-walking chicken in a documentary. 5y
WanderingBookaneer @Sw-T: Oooooh. What documentary? 5y

A Prayer Journal | Flannery O'Connor

Flannery O‘Connor was born on this day in 1925. Diagnosed with lupus in her twenties, she was told she only had a few years, but managed to produce two more novels and 30 short stories, attempting to write for a couple of hours a day in her bed toward the end. Treatment for lupus has improved since the 1950s. She also raised peacocks. From her Prayer Journal: “Give me the courage to stand the pain to get the grace.”
