Miniaturist
Miniaturist | Jessie Burton
Now a television miniseries, as seen on Masterpiece on PBSSet in seventeenth century Amsterdam--a city ruled by glittering wealth and oppressive religion--a masterful debut steeped in atmosphere and shimmering with mystery, in the tradition of Emma Donoghue, Sarah Waters, and Sarah Dunant."There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed . . ."On a brisk autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her new home, while splendorous, is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, always locked in his study or at his warehouse office--leaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin. But Nella's world changes when Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish her gift, Nella engages the services of a miniaturist--an elusive and enigmatic artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie and unexpected ways . . .Johannes' gift helps Nella to pierce the closed world of the Brandt household. But as she uncovers its unusual secrets, she begins to understand--and fear--the escalating dangers that await them all. In this repressively pious society where gold is worshipped second only to God, to be different is a threat to the moral fabric of society, and not even a man as rich as Johannes is safe. Only one person seems to see the fate that awaits them. Is the miniaturist the key to their salvation . . . or the architect of their destruction?Enchanting, beautiful, and exquisitely suspenseful, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

A re-read before reading The House of Fortune. I very rarely re-read, but enjoyed this much more second time around. I seem to recall being underwhelmed previously (Goodreads tells me it was 2015). Nicely sinister, a bit creepy, a great historical setting and some strong women sorting things out. It‘s also really quite sad. However I‘m left with the slight annoyance that the “who is the Miniaturist?” question is not satisfactorily resolved.

This took a long time to get to the point. Not a lot of answers by the end. Pretty well written otherwise, I think the character development and anticipation of something big happening kept me from putting it down

I read this years ago, but there a ‘sequel‘ out so I wanted to re-familiarize myself with it. So glad I did. It‘s 1680‘s Amsterdam, about a young wife learning the secrets of her new family & a mysterious miniaturist. I hope I get to learn more about the miniaturist in the sequel!

This one took me a long while to get into. I didn't find there was enough magic to be magical realism. There were some character developments that kept me going to find out what was next, and the ending chapters brought this up from a pan to a so-so.

This novel has a lot going for it but it took 132 pages for it to finally make its appearance. Some events were interesting and engaging and other parts were not believable or needed. It‘s a good airport or beach read, but missed the mark for more.

I was unsure of this book at first. It Seemed to take a little while to get going but once it did I LOVED it! There were so many twists that I did not see coming!! I also liked how historically accurate it was, all the references to medieval Amsterdam are really interesting and I became so invested in the lives of the characters! #pick #theminiaturist

I liked the look at life in 17th century Amsterdam. There are a lot of restrictions on women at the time. Also, you can be executed for crimes like homosexuality. 18 year old Nella travels to the city to begin a new life with her husband Johannes. It soon becomes clear to her that they have an unconventional family and the book details her struggles to adapt. The book is beautifully written and entertaining.

Karisa Sounds great! And it was there to borrow in Litsy too! 💃🏻 💃🏻💃🏻 3y

I appreciate the reminder from @TheAromaofBooks that the #bookspin challenge should be fun and that I‘m not a horrible person for missing the mark on my first attempt. Did you know she counts #bookspin books read after the selected month? A chance at redemption!

Have you found your #bookspin survey for May yet?

Deblovestoread Yes, she does count prior month‘s book. Just let her know which month it was for. Also, she counts DNF‘s. 4y
jimfields3 @TheAromaofBooks I appreciate that! @Kdgordon88 that is good to know, too! I hope more people take advantage of that. 4y

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter. I ate too many tiny Turkish Delight filled chocolate eggs but they were GOOD.

This book was good too. Really evocative imagery of 17th century Amsterdam, plucky protagonist and a mysterious family - and then the even more mysterious miniaturist whose tiny creations are too perfect and realistic. Great for those who love historic fiction, a solid 3 stars for me, ⬇️

Centique I think I was just too excited about the tiny dolls and wanted more of the miniaturist. Still very enjoyable 👍 4y

Set in 17th-century Amsterdam, this novel is about choosing what to do when given the opportunity to know ourselves. Some characters turn away from themselves, some live their truth either out loud or in secret, and others are able to grow between the two. The PBS miniseries adaptation is mostly true to the novel, with some details and motivations modified, possibly for the sake of drama. It's all good, but I prefer how it is in the novel.

The Miniaturist wasn't next on my TBR, but it was available on Libby when I went to sew today. I really liked the PBS Masterpiece version, and I'm enjoying the book, but I kind of wish I didn't have the miniseries influencing how I picture everything.

One of the books on my Reading Rush TBR for the stay at home readathon.
I bought this one only because the cover is so pretty like more than five years ago. I need to read it.

Also, I need a good recommendation for a funny book since that is the only prompt that I don't have a book for. Please recommend something short and funny; it can be a short stories collection, regular novel, graphic novel... Anything.

What an excellent, well-written debut novel! I‘ve had this book on kindle for ages but read so many mixed reviews, I just kept putting it off. I decided to read it for my Netherlands book for #ReadingEurope2020, but chose to listen to the audio from the library because it‘s read by DAVINA PORTER. 😍

It‘s fascinating to me that the author was inspired by a real dollhouse on display at Rijksmuseum, and Burton clearly did her research.

⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain The atmosphere of this novel is amazing... I could almost feel the darkness, cold, oppression, and damp of Amsterdam in the 17th century. A diverse cast of characters dealing with a host of differences and issues in a repressive society. Really good historical fiction with a touch of magical realism. I love how the eponymous miniaturist is really just a side character woven throughout. 5y
sprainedbrain If you read this, definitely go back when you‘ve finished and reread the first chapter. Brilliant!

Tineke @canbku I did enjoy it. It wasn't a fantastic read, but it was interesting to read about that time. It's also about the capital of my country and I have seen the actual dollhouse, which is quite something, so that gave me a bit more incentive. I gave it three stars on goodreads. 5y

I felt a little deflated after reading this... It felt like a very "Negative Nancy" kind of story line and then got worse! It held my attention rather well, but it didn't leave me feeling anything but sad.

It has a very unique plot, and well formed characters. It's also very thoroughly researched for the time period. I just wish there were more cause for joy. A happier finish... It seemed, to me anyway, that in the end everyone loses.

Caroline2 I know what you mean, I was underwhelmed by this one too. 5y
