Under the Midnight Sun
Under the Midnight Sun | Keigo Higashino
From the acclaimed international bestseller Keigo Higashino (The Devotion of Suspect X) comes a sweeping novel in the tradition of Les Miserables and Crime and Punishment. This is the compelling story of a brutal crime and the two teenagersRyo, the son of the murdered man, and Yukiho, the daughter of the main suspectwhose lives remain inextricably linked over the twenty-year search for the truth behind the crime. In Osaka in 1973, the body of a murdered man is found in an abandoned building. Investigating the crime, Detective SasagakI is unable to find the killer. Over the next twenty years, through the lens of a succession of characters, Higashino tells the story of two teens, Ryo and Yukiho, whose lives are most affected by the crime, and the obsessed detective, Sasagaki, who continues to investigate the murder, looking for the elusive truth. Under the Midnight Sun is a complex, psychological novel about crime and its after-effects by one the most read and most accomplished contemporary mystery author. A twisting, compelling work that will astonish and delight Higashinos old fans and new readers alike.

The book is also popular by the name "UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN".the reason I picked it up was cause.. Mystery,Thrill & New Culture through the popular Japanese author Keigo Higashino.
What I really loved was the in detail description of scenes and events the way the characters timeline is followed through.Even though it's a translation it's very true and beautiful to the core. Will definitely be reading more books by the same author.

Has anyone read this?! It‘s so good but so dark! You just have to talk about it with someone. I really enjoyed Higashino‘s later books starring Detective Galileo, but he really hones his craft in this earlier work.

The criminal is not difficult to guess but the story focuses on the ‘why‘ and ‘how‘. It follows 2 persons linked by an unsolved crime for over 20 yrs, other ruthless crimes that occur around them, and a detective who never gave up on the initial case. It boasts a wide cast of characters but things come together at the end. An intricate maze of a mystery with well done translation that delves deep into the human psyche make this a terrific read.

Cathythoughts Great review! I see I already have it stacked 👍🏻♥️ 5y

#currentread . I‘m liking the complexity of the story. Despite the wide cast of characters (story spans 20 yrs) and the length of the novel (539 pgs), it‘s holding my interest. I think I‘m liking it better than Devotion Of Suspect X.

Read for #JapaneseThriller #booked2018
I appreciate when challenges make me read out of my comfort zone. This is not a genre I pick up on my own too often but I got really sucked into this book. The writing/translation was good, though I did have a bit of trouble following the multiple characters/time jumps at first. Mostly, though, this book makes me sad. Esp once I realized the title's significance.

The core of the story is relationship between woman and man through 20 years, and interesting part is that we don‘t see them interact. Narration is quite fragmented, with a lot of characters and side stories, but nicely executed. Dark, chilly and I like it.

Under the midnight sun by Kiego Higashino - From the writer of "Dhrishyam",(Wait , what ?. Yes, Dhrishyam is stolen from Kiego Higashino's Devotion of suspect X.) a brilliant book that talks about two kids who try to survive streets of Japan by establishing symbiotic relationship with each other. I know it sounds confusing but give it a try :)

Such an intricately crafted crime novel set in Japan, it keeps you guessing until the very end. Not a fast paced read as many crime novels seem to be. This one examines multiple characters involved over twenty years, and how seemingly random connections are not so random after all, bringing it to a chilling conclusion. Definitely recommend!

#TBRtemptation post. This mystery has received all kinds of acclaim. And the library just got itself a copy ???. A murder case in 1973 Osaka with an obsessed investigator, involving the victim's son and main suspect's daughter. Sign me up! This one will also work for a number of reading challenge categories: Asian author, Asian setting, mystery, over 500 pages, title starts with "U". #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

DrexEdit Strange. On goodreads it's cataloged under "Journey Under the Midnight Sun." sounds like a book I'd enjoy either way! ? 8y

A quiet Saturday night as usual reading in bed. But we did have a long day with the circus, lunch with friends, then a picnic organised by the Mandarin immersion programme that my 5yo is starting at on Wednesday! This is my late entry for #augustphotochallenge which today is #currentlyreading - Higashino wrote The Devotion of Suspect X and this is his latest translated work

BekahB Sounds interesting! 8y

RealLifeReading @Notafraidofwords I grew up in Singapore where a second language is compulsory from primary school (age 6/7) but it is taught as a second language so just once a day. My kid's K class starts with 90% mandarin! So I'm a bit worried! But I guess every kindergartener's parents are nervous, immersion or not 😬 8y
RealLifeReading @Flaneurette oh wow that is fantastic! 8y
Notafraidofwords @RealLifeReading of course. I think he will do great. We studied immersion schools for my class in person. And yeah, the kids in the beginning struggled. But by the end of the week, they were catching on to things. I think it will be great. 8y

This book has had at least two Japanese television adaptations, a movie, and then the Korean remakes of both. Finally an English translation, which I just finished reading. It's great, and I liked the throw away cultural references that anchored time and place. 1973 murder that a detective can't let go, and the ties that bind son of the victim and the daughter of the suspect.

Reading = sport. There's weightlifting (especially on library days when I haul multiple picture books around. Also some books like the Higashino above are larger than phone books). There's marathons (readathons). There's sprints (reading as much as I can before the kids realize I'm ignoring them).
