I finish this novel at the end of last year but felt I needed some time to write a review. I loved this book! A great debut novel rich in Black history, Detroit history, and family complexity. I feel this book is so special to me because it shows the Black family as no different from any other. Highly recommended and a great book for #blackhistory month.

I expected more with this one. Beautiful descriptive writing for the most part, however I felt the story line wasn't really developed as much as it should have been. Some parts didn't seem realistic and at times I got bored. However, keep in mind this is a debut. Despite these couple of things, this is an important novel for the world we live in today. The message of immigration, class, culture are among some of the topics explored.

A book of memories. A woman reminisces on her upbringing spent in Tennessee & Brooklyn. The writing has a dreamy atmospheric flow. I did feel some parts where stronger than others. I especially love how the reader could get a feel of Brooklyn. I feel anybody growing up in the inner-city can relate to many things in this novel. I would definitely recommend listening to it on audio.
