Pickpick

I finish this novel at the end of last year but felt I needed some time to write a review. I loved this book! A great debut novel rich in Black history, Detroit history, and family complexity. I feel this book is so special to me because it shows the Black family as no different from any other. Highly recommended and a great book for #blackhistory month.

DocBrown I'm using this book in my Families and Society course and am so excited. Re-reading it now and loving it even more than when I selected it! So great to see all of the history behind the family's stories -- to see how things like the Great Migration and Great Recession affected and continues to affect African American families. Also to see how things like jobs and houses are supposed to bring some security but end up not being secure for many. 7y
Stacy84 @mdhughes72 Thank you for the comment. I agree with everything you said. I love how it tells the African American experience. It's a great book. 7y

Mehso-so

I expected more with this one. Beautiful descriptive writing for the most part, however I felt the story line wasn't really developed as much as it should have been. Some parts didn't seem realistic and at times I got bored. However, keep in mind this is a debut. Despite these couple of things, this is an important novel for the world we live in today. The message of immigration, class, culture are among some of the topics explored.

rachellayown Sorry you didn't like this more! It's one of my favorite books of the year. 8y
Stacy84 @rachellayown 🙂 I still loved most of the writing, just felt the story could have been put together better. I always kept in mind this is her first novel. I do feel she has a lot of potential and look forward to her next novel! 8y
rachellayown I can see that. I thought it was the perfect blend of literary and commercial. Super readable and entertaining, but also well written and had depth. I'm looking forward to seeing what she does next! 8y

half_book_and_co I read this book aswell and was underwhelmed. I actually can't see what all the fuzz was about. It is a okay book, but I'd argue better ones have been written about immigrant experiences... 8y
shawnmooney The one I loved deeply that deals with some of the same themes is 8y
DocBrown I enjoyed this and We Need New Names both. This one felt like a letdown because they end up moving back to their home country. Wonder if people would like it more without that 'disappointing' ending. 7y

Another Brooklyn: A Novel | Jacqueline Woodson
Pickpick

A book of memories. A woman reminisces on her upbringing spent in Tennessee & Brooklyn. The writing has a dreamy atmospheric flow. I did feel some parts where stronger than others. I especially love how the reader could get a feel of Brooklyn. I feel anybody growing up in the inner-city can relate to many things in this novel. I would definitely recommend listening to it on audio.

BookishFeminist I agree- I loved this on audio. 😊 so glad this is on the National Book Awards longlist 8y
