1-26-24: I finally got to see Who‘s Afraid of Virginia Woolf on the stage! I‘ve watched the movie many times and loved it but seeing it live was amazing. Hearing all the caustic quips and the audience laughing changed the whole first half of the show for me. Everyone‘s personalities change over the course of the show but it is more evident in the play. I highly recommend seeing both the movie and the play. 📖💖
This play is exhausting and it‘s so worth it. The film was also groundbreaking because the director went against the morality code most movies followed at the time because he refused to water down Albee‘s play. I think this was the wise decision. This play is an important addition to the American canon. I would LOVE to see this one on the stage! #RoryGilmoreChallenge
It was definitely a page-turner— once I picked it up, I couldn‘t put it down. This was another play written about fantasy vs. reality, and I am all here for it. The dark humor Mr. Albee twisted into the lives of the characters was disturbingly splendid. At times it was comical and others serious. The ending was such a twist as well! Halfway through, I thought I knew how it was going to end, but I was so wrong! It was a dark, but wonderful read.
The reveal at the end was worth the whole thing!
A friend asked me to read Martha for scene study—exhausted after 15 min. How do actors approach the whole marathon of it? Truth vs illusion, private vs public, honesty vs phoniness, humiliation, stagnation, ambition, childlessness, cruelty for entertainment, triumph of wit, assertion of self, thrusts & parries. Nick‘s quiet “I think I understand this” proxy for audience. The language. The snapdragons! SNAP! Energy still contagious & sickening.1962
I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.
Day 8.
#fromthetbrstacks
An evening in bed with all my animals. It‘s starting to be winter temperatures outside, so the cats like to cosy up with me an the dog inside. I really enjoy this book! It is not at all as I thought it would be. Have anyone else read it? What did you think?
Sometimes it‘s weird to read a play instead of seeing it, but I had no trouble visualizing here. A portrait of two unhappy marriages in a small college town, where everyone comes apart over the course of one long night.
“I said I was impressed, Martha. I‘m beside myself with jealousy. What do you want me to do, throw up?”
This is NOT a cozy story. The characters are meant to be unlikable. The plot is meant to make you feel uneasy.
First, I didn't really get that. But the more the story unfolds, the deeper it gets.

Who‘s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? By Edward Albee 😍
#readinggoals I have 3 of these on the go and for book club, my friend picked the two plays. Virginia Woolf will be a reread which is fine because it‘s great. I don‘t know anything about God of Carnage. These will probably be it for September. Some count for my ongoing #gilmoregirlsreadingchallenge and #aty2019 #selfimprovementsept
Did George and Martha have a #happymarriage ? Depends upon one‘s interpretation of the concept. Liz Taylor and Richard burton had a volatile marriage complicated by lots of booze, divorce, and remarriage

So, I've never read, Virginia Woolf! Is this a sign? 😉

I already liked the play and the film, but seeing it on Broadway was just amazing- I don't think I've had a better theatre experience. And I can't think of a more memorable single night in literature #Tonighttonight #90sinJuly @Robothugs @Cinfhen
George and Martha could be the definition of #TaintedLove. And it helps that the film version starred real-life toxic couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. As my friend's husband told their daughter about Elizabeth Taylor, "By the time you've reached your 8th marriage, it might be time to ask yourself if maybe you're the problem." #JuneTunz
What's the difference between a drama queen and just full-on psycho? Regardless, Martha (and maybe George, too) from Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is my pick for today's #characters2017 theme of #dramaqueen. (Despite the recent controversy coming from the Albee estate--seriously, wtf--I still love the play.)
Afternoon plans. Not doing any reading, but I am doing a book puzzle while watching tennis, so I'm okay with that. 🎾 #rolandgarros
Three favorites that were #publishedinthe1960s #AprilBookShowers @RealLifeReading All of these are from 1962, but I read them at very different times in my life.
Harley wanted to help me share my latest #bookhaul. I purchased 12 books for less than $40. The thrift store was well stocked with classics this time around. I've already read The Hypnotist, but I don't own a copy. I'm working on collecting all of Lars Kepler's books. #dogsoflitsy #classics #thrift
Today's West End theatre plans! I've read Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, but never seen it in action. So excited!! And Phantom (the book and the play) has always been and always will be an obsession of mine.
Well that was unexpected! Reading about dysfunctional couples makes one feel so normal. 😂
#litsyRC11 from Rory Gilmore's list. So many choices
Truth or illusion, George; you don't know the difference.
What better dysfunctional family than George and Martha from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? #PhotoADayNov16 #dysfunctionalfamily
I don't have a ton of #textonlycovers and at first I thought it was because I read mostly backlist and it's a fairly modern design choice, but my copy of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was published in the '80s and Vox in the '90s, so now I don't know. I should look for some nonfic about the history of book design trends, I bet that'd be really interesting. #booktober
he loved all the gifts :D

Meant to post this earlier; one of my favorite plays. RIP Edward Albee.
I had the great good fortune to see the revival of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in NYC in 2012. I hadn't been a huge fan of the play, but Amy Morton as Martha and, most especially, Tracy Letts as George, completely transformed it for me. They were dynamic-a perfect match for the characters and each other-and I experienced the play in an entirely different way. So lucky to see the play in one of its best productions. Edward Albee, 1928-2016.
Such an iconic American playwright. RIP, Mr. Albee.
2016 you have to stop taking our legends. I met Mr. Albee once at University. He spoke at the playwriting class I was attending. #YesItWasThatGood RIP Mr. Albee
Rest in peace, Mr. Albee.
Goodbye to a fantastically talented writer. Albee won several pulitzers.
So long, Edward Albee, and thanks for all the drama.
