Pickpick

I was at risk for losing my Gay card for having not read this yet!

Christina Crawford‘s controversial bestseller opened the world‘s eyes to child abuse in general, and child abuse at the hands of a revered movie star & monster, Joan Crawford, in particular.

I loved the letters from Joan and encounters with her famous friends, but too much of the book is taken up by adult Christina‘s whining that Mommie wouldn‘t send her money or not enough.

rubyslippersreads I think this is one case where the movie is better. 😂 2mo
James263 Hi 2mo
DavidDiamond @rubyslippersreads I think you are right…and it‘s a lot shorter! Cuts out the fluff and gets to the juicy parts! 2mo

I‘m still not even 70% into this book and I‘ve been reading it FOREVER. The story itself is compelling. Joan‘s a vile bitch. But man, couldn‘t someone have edited this book? It‘s so unnecessarily long and detailed, to the point of being painful. #hollywood #movember

rather_be_reading omg this is a book?! 5y
Reviewsbylola Yes! Written by Joan‘s daughter! @rather_be_reading (edited) 5y
Nute Instant memory, “No more wire hangers!” That was some crazy mess!😂🤣 5y

Eggs I believe the author was adopted from the orphanage in Before We Were Yours. Only they weren‘t orphans-they we‘re straight-up kidnapped and treated horribly, then sold to the wealthy 5y
Megabooks Have you watched the movie? Hulu is recommending it to me. 5y
Cinfhen @Nute SAME!!!! Nightmares from that scene 5y
Cinfhen Watch the film @Megabooks although I bet it feels very dated 5y

Getting in first maybe on #abbainaugust because #timezones and #newzealandseesthemorningfirst 😂

#mammamia made me think of this book I read as a teen. I hoovered it up and thought all mothers were probably monsters - at the time I wasn‘t all that impressed with my own one! Far too long ago for me to recommend this to anyone else. Have any Littens read it more recently?

Reviewsbylola I‘ve heard of this one! 6y
emilyhaldi First #abbainaugust post!! 🏆 I haven‘t read this book but my first thought when reading the title was that Netflix documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest 😱 Totally unrelated to this book but omg you should watch it! Mind-blowing 🤯 6y
Meredith3 Wow all the way from New Zealand! Howdy from the past out here in Ohio where I am still in July👋🏻 👋🏻 !! 6y

Meredith3 @emilyhaldi I agree with Emily, if you‘re in to being creeped out, definitely check out Mommy Dead and Dearest! 🖤💀 6y
Centique @emilyhaldi @meredith3 ooh I looked it up on IMDB and it sounds freaky! Not on Netflix here at the moment (we don‘t get the same catalogue) but I will look out for it. 👍 Also - hello from the future @Meredith3 😂😂 6y
emilyhaldi Lolololol @Meredith3 😂 6y
Cathythoughts I think I saw the movie years ago ... must look up the book ! Nice one 👍🏻 6y
Cinfhen I remember the film....”No wire hangers” total 🥜 don‘t think I read the book...and I‘m gonna check out that Netflix series @emilyhaldi @Meredith3 6y
Reggie I haven‘t read the book but that part where she sends the dolls away so that maybe they don‘t make so much noise that they keep Christina awake. She was so horrible!!! 6y
Centique @Reggie wasn‘t she terrible! 6y
Mdargusch I haven‘t read this book but the movie of this book is definitely creepy. 6y

Watching on TV - one of my favorite movies that I watched with my mom. We would quote the movie and laugh. It‘s so sad to remember that Christina actually lived through this torture. I never read the book so - it‘s officially on the TBR. #NoWireHangersEver

Heads up!! I've been wanting to read this book for forever and it's on sale on kindle today for $1.99! Remember...no...more...wire...hangers...EVER! 😱😅P.S. As a disclaimer I tend not to believe Christina Crawford's version of events in its entirety, but I've always wanted to read the book anyway just to see exactly what she says. Always been a fan of Joan Crawford's movies. ❤️

My mom was pretty jealous of my Secret Santa gifts so as I was shopping for Secret Cupid I did a little shopping for her as well and gifted her with this last night. She had a pretty intense surgery today (all is well!) and I was happy to give her a few books to enjoy during her recovery.

Sorry I haven't been posting about books lately! I've finished a few and will update soon but haven't had a moment to put coherent thoughts together.

AmyG No wire hangers! Ah, this Mommie Dearest joke was a hit in my house for years. 😜 7y
OrangeMooseReads @AmyG lol we still say that any time we see a wire hanger 7y

Confession time: I am absolutely obsessed with Joan Crawford. I think she's a phenomenal actress and she's gorgeous (and has perfect eyebrows). Therefore, I refuse to read or watch Mommie Dearest, because I don't want my image of her to be tainted. Narrow-minded? Perhaps. But she's just so talented. #BooksAboutMothers #MayBookFlowers

merelybookish A gossip blogger I used to read always talked about the gossip buffet. That we pick and choose the stories and scandals we want to believe 7y
merelybookish In other words, I think it's okay to love Joan Crawford and ignore the other stuff. 😉 7y
JacintaMCarter @merelybookish My love of Joan Crawford has also led me to despise Bette Davis. She's a good actress, too, but I feel that it would be a betrayal to Joan to like her rival. 7y
See All 7 Comments
merelybookish That's fair. It's like Angelina Jolie vs. Jennifer Aniston. 😉 Although didn't they do a creepy movie together? What's the matter with Baby Jane? 7y
rubyslippersreads @JacintaMCarter Bette Davis's daughter wrote a Mommie Dearest-type book too: 7y
Chelsibno Confession time: My favorite Joan Crawford movie is Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?. I liked how Crawford and Davis worked off each other. It was one time where their rivalry actually helped both of them give great performances. I also liked how the film wasn't afraid to explore darker issues. 7y
Liatrek I love Joan Crawford. One of my favorite movies of hers is Mildred Pierce ❤️ 7y

A different take on #booksaboutmothers. 😱 #maybookflowers This is apparently a real and highly-collectible doll. Happy Mother's Day!

OrangeMooseReads I want that doll! The movie fascinates me and I have the book on my TBR and has been for a while. 7y

I've been catching up with Bette and Joan. It's so good. I'd love to read Mommy Dearest, but I can't find it anywhere. Any ideas of where I might get lucky and find a copy?

RowReads1 Abebooks.com 8y
drokka I didn't know there was a book. I watched the made for tv film in the 80s (maybe early 90s). 8y
rubyslippersreads Open Library has the ebook (although there's a waiting list). If I'd known it was going to become so valuable, I would have kept my old copy. "No wire hangers!" ? 8y

My adopted mother was a strong woman who disregarded social norms to take care of her family.. Stood her ground against an abusive husband to make sure her little boys grew up in a loving home.. She taught me that I didn't need a man and encouraged my independence... 💖💖💖 #influentialwomen @LitsyFeministBookClub @TheNextBook @rachelm
