My streak of Nopes continues. I picked this up from my library for banned books week and I‘m a little sorry about that. I didn‘t expect to like Harriet, at least in the beginning, but I actually find her intolerable. I switched to audio, but I‘m just not enjoying the writing either. So, chalk another one up to just not my thing, and that‘s fine. (I do like Ole Golly, though. I‘d almost keep reading just for her)

Ruthiella I loved this as a child, but when I reread it, I was struck by how mean all the kid are. 😂 Definitely reminded me that children and adults have very different perspectives. 1y
DGRachel @Ruthiella Yes! I tried to remind myself of that and it didn‘t help. 😂 I‘m not sure if I‘m just too far away from that age now or if I don‘t want to be reminded of how horrible children can be at that age. 1y

I re-read this so many times as a kid, and re-reading as an adult was a bit strange. I loved Harriet then and really wanted to be her - I started keeping a notebook, I wished I lived in a city so I could spy on my neighbours. Rereading it as an adult, I still like how feisty she is, even how horrible she is at times, but I can see now that she's also quite dysfunctional, and maybe we're supposed to feel sorry for her, not want to be her.

Ruthiella I was surprised when I reread it as a kid how mean the kids are-including Harriet! I did get any of that as a child. 3y

I enjoyed this one but this time I read it with adult eyes, there were concerns about Harriet‘s behavior. Loved her young critical thinking process. My heart was broken during the goodbye to her significant person. However, it should be discussed with middle grade children of what is appropriate or not when you write about others in school journal (social media). Also it should be discussed differences of being a “spy” vs public privacy. 3.75⭐️

1. I seem to have developed a fetish for natural fibers, making me prone to prefer historical fiction and nonfiction history. If I read anything from the 18th century I can't help but wonder where Jamie and Claire are meanwhile...

2. No preference. But I tend to remember them if they mention sandwiches.

I‘m more of a goody-two-shoes than Harriet but I was always curious like she is.
1: swimming and diving — I wasn‘t good enough to be on the teams. When I was in grad school though, I was diving for fun, and one of the members of the diving team started practicing with me because he said that I had “the soul of a diver.” 😊

These are three books that take place in New York that I read and loved as a child. I was always amazed at how these kids were allowed to walk and take buses and cabs around a big city like NYC without adults. I walked to school with other kids but that was it. I would have been terrified to take a bus on my own. 😀

When I talk about books that I read in my childhood most of the time I don't remember the story. I don't remember all of the characters. I don't remember how long it took me to finish reading the book.
But what I do remember is probably the most precious gift of discovering literature as a child -> the story lifted me beyond the gravitational pull of this earthly planet and delivered me to some place else.👇🏽

Tonton ❤️ Harriet❣️ 5y
Nute I couldn't wait to go. I wanted to read under the bed covers in the middle of the night, on the playground at recess, sitting under oak trees in the backyard, laying in the grassy fields behind our house under cloudy skies, in the bath tub...everywhere and all the time!
One good reading experience made me hungry for the next. Sometimes a book was so good, I just wanted to read it over and over again.👇🏽
(edited) 5y
Nute
I don't remember anything about the book, Harriet the Spy, except that I absolutely loved it. I carried it to all my secret places for months on end, and read it so many times from beginning to end until it began to fall apart.

I have a lot of books like that from my childhood, books that were loved so much that they eventually required the taping and gluing of covers and pages to remain intact.👇🏽
5y

Nute I remember pleading with my Mom for the purchase of a composition notebook📓 so that I could write things down like Harriet (far more cooler known as journaling now...well, she was a spy🥴). PLEASE MOM!

Although the storylines cannot be recalled accurately, none of that matters to me. These books rate high with me, because I remember how I felt when I read them: that reading was more than just something to do, it was a discovery. It was a gift!

(edited) 5y
megnews @Nute you‘ve really captured what it is to become and love being a reader from a young age. I can‘t remember the stories either nor even much of the ones I loved from a year ago. But I remember the feelings they invoked and the sense of adventure. Beautiful post. 5y

Nute @megnews @Tamra Thank you! Some of my best memories are of my childhood reading adventures and how much I loved a particular story or wanted to be a particular character. I‘ve read many good stories as an adult, but reading has never felt as all encompassing as it did in childhood. (edited) 5y

Pickpick

If Litsy had been around when I first read this, at age 8, I probably would have rated it 4 stars. I should probably stop rereading my favorite childhood books. 🤔😉 So far, only The Phantom Tollbooth has held up. 💙

Sleepswithbooks I remember loving this book!!! 6y
Louise This brings back memories of going around with my own little spy book! 6y
LibrarianRyan One of the new librarians at work has never read or seen Phantom Tollbooth. Guess what he is getting for Christmas. 6y

JoyBlue @Louise Haha—fun! 🔎 6y
JoyBlue @LibrarianRyan Amazing! Which edition? I reread it fairly regularly, in print (I have multiple editions) or audio (narrated by David Hyde Pierce). You‘re a good friend/co-worker! 6y
Coffeedaily One of my favorites when I was a kid. We had a neighborhood spy club with composition notebooks full of mundane minutia. So fun! 6y
