ELKA BARELY REMEMBERS a time before she knew Trapper. She was just seven years old, wandering lost and hungry in the wilderness, when the solitary hunter took her in. In the years since then, he s taught her how to survive in this desolate land where civilization has been destroyed and men are at the mercy of the elements and each other. But the man Elka thought she knew has been harboring a terrible secret. He s a killer. A monster. And now that Elka knows the truth, she may be his next victim. Armed with nothing but her knife and the hard lessons Trapper s drilled into her, Elka flees into the frozen north in search of her real parents. But judging by the trail of blood dogging her footsteps, she hasn t left Trapper behind and he won t be letting his little girl go without a fight. If she s going to survive, Elka will have to turn and confront not just him, but the truth about the dark road she s been set on. "The Wolf Road "is an intimate cat-and-mouse tale of revenge and redemption, played out against a vast, unforgiving landscape told by an indomitable young heroine fighting to escape her past and rejoin humanity."

4¼⭐ | NARRATION 😍 = Amazing | Narrated by 📣 Amy McFadden

The Wolf Road is a very well-rounded story, one that is not only intellectually stimulating but also has a lot of action. While I would definitely call this Dystopian, and I would even go so far as to call it a dystopian hellscape, the end of the world scenario in this takes a backseat to the running-from-a-serial-killer aspect that‘s going on here.

5 💫💫💫💫💫 This was suprising an excellent #Halloween read. It reads like a self defense class for women. 🤣 The writing style is excellent, the suspense perfect. Cat and Mouse chase throughout the story, told from the POV of Elka the girl taken by a serial killer. He took care of her teaching her how to survive. In the end she showed him a thing or two. Elka shows how trauma can be fought and won. #cocoturns50 #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

It's remarkable that The Wolf Road is the first novel by Beth Lewis. This is a well-crafted suspense story set in a post-Wold War III North America. Elka , the heroine, is on the run in the wilderness from Trapper, a monster of a man who raised her from age 7. Loved this story.

Don‘t you just love Litsy?! This post-apocalyptic novel is so not my thing but it came as one of the 10 free downloads from Bookchoice that (I think) @jhod told us about....

I‘ve never read anything remotely like this , and wouldn‘t have done without all you Littens broadening my horizons, and I absolutely LOVED it!

This would be a lot cozier if I wasn't on the train, about to walk home in this mess, and instead sitting at home in bed, in my pajamas. 😭 This really is the perfect weather for this book, though.

vivastory I really enjoyed this book. The post-apocalyptic setting felt unnecessary, but it didn't detract from it either 7y

I had to wait for what felt like an eternity to get this from the library, but the wait was worth it. This is a post apocalyptic thriller which is of course right up my alley and I really enjoyed it! However it did take a little while to get used to the dialect it's written in.

I really enjoyed this read. Elka was found as a child by Trapper, who teaches her how to hunt, fish, and fend for herself in the wild. Her world gets toppled when she finds out that Trapper is a killer - and now she's on the run from the law and from the man she thought of as a father. #thriller #dystopia #alternateworld

I finished the audio version today and it was very, very good! It is post apocalyptic, which is my favorite genre, but that aspect was barely noticeable. It has strong female characters and friendship, with mystery and adventure. It is dark but I'm okay with that. My one complaint is that if I hear the word "what" in place of that, which, who, whose, etc again, I may scream.

This book was pretty intense. Elka grows up in the wild with a man named Trapper who raised her who she later finds out is a murderer. It's a journey across the wilderness with Elka always looking over her shoulder. Elka's character really evolves throughout the book. I really enjoyed it. This audiobook is so good so far! (I took this picture of my friend Atka. He's the ambassador wolf at the Wolf Conservation Center near my house. He's a fantastic, feisty old man! Here's a link to the site if anyone is interested. http://nywolf.org Right now the wolves need lots of support because of all the changing laws having to do with hunting.)

I finished this audiobook and enjoyed it. The terrible grammar was a bit easier to deal with after Penelope showed up and watered it down 😂

I bought this waterproof speaker to listen to books in the shower, and it plays music great but pauses and skips words with audiobooks. Do any of you book nerds have a speaker you like? I'm hoping I don't need to splurge for an expensive one 🤓

JacqMac I have an Mpow ARMOR waterproof speaker. It's great and it cost just over $20 when I bought it. 8y

This genre-bending post-apocalyptic book is part horror story, part cat-and-mouse thriller, part modern western, and part survival tale. It's a haunting story about a feral young girl reckoning with her inner darkness and coming to terms with her own humanity. Elka is one protagonist I won't soon forget.

OhNoMersault Loved this one. 8y

YES. This book. A gritty, dark tale that takes place in dystopian Canada, where society has resorted to its usual evils. Elka was abandoned by her biological parents & taken in by a wilderness man she calls Trapper when her aunt goes missing. She loves him like a father but then discovers he's been murdering women instead of hunting. Elka journeys further north in search of her parents with the sheriff & Trapper haunting her the whole way. 👇🏼

BookishFeminist What feels like a western with its gritty dialect, wilderness survival story, & journey morphs into horror when Elka's memories catch up to her. Lewis creates a vivid world where the scenery is a character, & all of her characters have depth. It moves at a slow boil while exploring humanity's evils, identity, family, belonging, & survival. Reminds me of Paul Tremblay. 🐺 #dystopia #strongfemaleprotagonist #queerbooks #queerauthors #debut (edited) 8y

I'm listening to this audiobook and enjoying the story, but the author's choice to use terrible grammar is distracting and hurts my brain. Did this bother anyone else? I'm not sure if it would be better or worse if I was reading it myself.

Anton This one is on my list! I can't tell from the blurbs, is it a contemporary setting or post apocalyptic? (Admittedly, lately the two seem hard to tell apart...) 8y
BookishFeminist @Anton I'm 25% in and it's hard to tell. It's definitely not sci fi or fantasy though. If it's dystopian it's more like Peter Heller's The Dog Stars. But it truthfully just reads like gritty lit fic. 8y

Joybishoptx You get hints as you go along. I'll post the setting as a spoiler in the next comment if you want to know. My problem was I kept wanting to talk in that dialect while I read it. 8y
Joybishoptx Basically the idea is the Cold War wasn't so cold. The Russians dropped a nuclear bomb somewhere in British Columbia, ruining that part of the world. People have reverted to kind of a frontier way of life and the technological advances of the late 20th and early 21st centuries never happened. 8y
Joybishoptx All that is just setting. No plot spoilers 8y
SoniaC Love Thai food. Book looks great too. 8y
Audrey This looks delicious and I'm coveting the light saber chopsticks. FYI, it's considered bad luck in Chinese culture (and probably other Asian cultures who are buddhists) to have chopsticks sticking out of rice. It's bc when someone passes, one sticks incense sticks into bowls of uncooked rice as offerings. I'm not that superstitious but, yup, I have no explanation other than I don't want bad luck for you or yours. 8y
BookishFeminist @Audrey 😮 thank you for reminding me!! The sad part is I know this and am usually mindful of it when dining or taking pictures but completely forgot this time. I'm not superstitious either but tbh it's just good etiquette to stay conscious of it as to not accidentally offend or bring discomfort to anyone who is. So thank you! 8y

I liked this book. I am a fan of dystopian novels. It was a darker read than what I normally read. I don't want to write too much about it and spoil the twist and turns. The ending had a good twist that made me 🤔. I really liked the the narrator's friendship with Penelope and the wolf.

Joybishoptx I ALMOST put it down because I thought the wolf was going to die but I had to know what happened. 8y
eastbaykate @Joybishoptx - I totally understand...I almost put the book down when she was mean to the wolf and went with Penelope! The ending made me happy that they were reunited. 8y
